Notice that 'Backup Files has failed'

Have HP Pavilion, Vista, FF

Problem:

After I got that notice I opened the backup and restore center on my computer and tried to adjust the setting for "backup files", I get to the page that says "USER ACCOUNT CONTROL" and that takes me to a page that says"Backup files" and it says "WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SAVE YOUR BACKUP?" I click on the line that list drive "Element(K)" which is my ex.hard drive. I click next and that takes me to the page that says "WHICH DISK DO YOU YOU WANT TO INCLUDE IN THE BACKUP?" But the box to check for HP(C)(System)is grayed out and I cannot check it. The one below that "FactoryImage(D)" can be checked.

I checked to see if the ex. hard drive is connected and as far ad I can tell it is.

Not sure what you mean by HP(C)(System)

At that point you should see your external USB Hard drive I would think and that would usually be called E, F, G something like that.

Double click My Computer and tell us the Letter assigned to any removable storage device, this is where you External device should be listed if it's not then there's a problem with it, a simple reboot could fix it.

I wonder can you even restore a file saved to the external drive using VistaÂs own File Backup & Restore.

I am going to get a whole house surge protector. But should I also invest in getting "good" surge protectors for my electronics (tv and related peripherals, computer and peripherals?). If so, could someone point me toward a good one. I wouldn't know what makes a surge protector good (and think just getting expensive is not the way to make the selection). I do have surge protectors in all those areas, but don't think we selected them with any real knowledge. Thank you. Lynn. PS - and my efforts to copy are delayed - bc. I can't find the replacement drive. We received so many packages last week - and during the power outage - so I was opening and putting things away by flashlight - and so far, I can't find it. have this scary feeling that my husband or cleaning woman thought the box was trash and tossed it out. Hope not.

I'll answer part of your question by saying that RW DVDs become less reliable over time as you write over them. Since I presume these are important files that you want to save, rather than change all the time, go with regular, name brand, good quality, single use DVDs...they're cheap. One DVD typically holds about 4.7 GB, and I presume that you will be prompted if you need more discs, but I don't know exactly how this works as I backup on an external hard drive. You might wish to consider that option as you can get a good, large hard drive for under $80 and it will do all of this automatically for you.

I use 'Acronis True Image'with a desktop and an external drive. The Acronis 'Secure Zone'(backup) is on the external. In fact, had some problems today and restored my entire drive in about 20 minutes. You can use Acronis 'Snap Restore' which will allow you to start using the drive while it is backing up (backs up critical system files while you're working). It's not free but the time it has saved me in restoring my PC was well worth the price. Witz You can buy it online or 'box'version at one of the major stores. Hi there, off-centre, We got yer back, kid! How good that is, what with our rudimentary level of knowledge, computer-wise (well, somewhat reduced "wise", maybe) may be a matter worthy of some question. Thanks for the info. I had a call purportedly from a windows guy the other day, saying there was something wrong with my computer ... I asked him how he knew, without entering my computer uninvited, and he said they'd noticed there was something wrong ... ... was I at my computer? ... ... he could help me fix it. I told him that I was not at the computer ... ... and that my computer is not attached to the internet, whether by line, tower or satellite. That pretty well ended our conversation. Gonna have to change that, though, I think. ole joyful

The first page that I mentioned above is where it asks WHERE to save the back up (external drive(K:)to.

The second page is where it asks what DRIVE do you want to save files FROM. That is where it's grayed out,the C:system drive, and I can't click on it.

My assigned ex hard drive is (K:)

I am going to do as you suggested and do a reboot. I'll let you know if it makes a difference.

WEll now, just goes to show you how lucky I can get sometimes..the reboot did the trick.

I have read many many times where you guys have told those of asking for help to try a reboot but sometimes the easiest thing just doesn't come to mind.
