Notice that 'Backup Files has failed'

Have HP Pavilion, Vista, FF

Problem:

After I got that notice I opened the backup and restore center on my computer and tried to adjust the setting for "backup files", I get to the page that says "USER ACCOUNT CONTROL" and that takes me to a page that says"Backup files" and it says "WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SAVE YOUR BACKUP?" I click on the line that list drive "Element(K)" which is my ex.hard drive. I click next and that takes me to the page that says "WHICH DISK DO YOU YOU WANT TO INCLUDE IN THE BACKUP?" But the box to check for HP(C)(System)is grayed out and I cannot check it. The one below that "FactoryImage(D)" can be checked.

I checked to see if the ex. hard drive is connected and as far ad I can tell it is.

Not sure what you mean by HP(C)(System)

At that point you should see your external USB Hard drive I would think and that would usually be called E, F, G something like that.

Double click My Computer and tell us the Letter assigned to any removable storage device, this is where you External device should be listed if it's not then there's a problem with it, a simple reboot could fix it.

I wonder can you even restore a file saved to the external drive using VistaÂs own File Backup & Restore.

no you could not use the OS part of your old one when putting it on the latest OS version only on the same OS, if you felt that your pc may soon crash or something and you would want to just put it back exactly as it is then you could use a program that would basically clone that drive including the Operating system and all, a snapshot in time of exactly how it is when you do the image save. There are some good free programs for doing that and it is pretty easy to do. If you choose to just save your data that can be done too, just drag and drop the folders you want to save onto a flash drive or DVD's or an external drive. Usually that would be any documents, pictures, music, videos, bookmarks and profiles, possibly email, etc that you would want to transfer to your new pc or just keep stored and safe. this article has a lot of info on various types of backup What Files Should You Backup On Your Windows PC? I have a 2TB Passport and two smaller external drives. I use a 17" Dell laptop with Windows 7. Just purchased in July because my previous laptop hard drive failed. I did not want Windows 8 so I really had to shop around for something with W7. I currently have no dedicated office so the work I do is generally while sitting on the sofa. Not optimum but it is what it is. As such, a NAS would not be practical. I know about NAS, they were used in the design department I used to work in. I'm tired of dealing with external drives and remembering to manually back up. It got me in trouble once, it will get me in trouble again. The cloud is really the way I want to go. I didn't know that bells and whistles would go off if I tried to upload 30Gb of photos. I'll contact my ISP and see what they suggest. Thanks. Jodi-

Typically the slightly fancier (read expensive) external hard drives come with more comprehensive software. That's not to say, you couldn't back-up manually, use Window's back-up software, or find some freeware that will accomplish the same thing. I would suggest sticking to drives made by Western Digital or Seagate. They seem to have the best track record for reliability. A second, off-site, backup plan is a better plan. While an external drive will be helpful in case of a hardware it won't help in the of something like a fire. There are online options or you could, depending on the size of your back-up, burn DVDs and put them in a safety deposit box or send them to a trusted relative or friend.

Hi there, off-centre, We got yer back, kid! How good that is, what with our rudimentary level of knowledge, computer-wise (well, somewhat reduced "wise", maybe) may be a matter worthy of some question. Thanks for the info. I had a call purportedly from a windows guy the other day, saying there was something wrong with my computer ... I asked him how he knew, without entering my computer uninvited, and he said they'd noticed there was something wrong ... ... was I at my computer? ... ... he could help me fix it. I told him that I was not at the computer ... ... and that my computer is not attached to the internet, whether by line, tower or satellite. That pretty well ended our conversation. The first page that I mentioned above is where it asks WHERE to save the back up (external drive(K:)to.

The second page is where it asks what DRIVE do you want to save files FROM. That is where it's grayed out,the C:system drive, and I can't click on it.

My assigned ex hard drive is (K:)

I am going to do as you suggested and do a reboot. I'll let you know if it makes a difference.

WEll now, just goes to show you how lucky I can get sometimes..the reboot did the trick.

I have read many many times where you guys have told those of asking for help to try a reboot but sometimes the easiest thing just doesn't come to mind.
