Sub-Zero vs Miele vs ?
Comments (11)@msklh - The Viking was 10 and had been repaired several times including the freon, which I was told in retrospect is equivalent to open heart surgery on a fridge. Should have replaced it then. I went through an exhaustive search for the replacement & there's a long thread on this forum with lots of details, plus back and forth from some really knowledgeable folk. Here's the link http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2312992/refrigerator-again-perspective-please?n=76 My opening was 24" deep and the Viking was integrated. But I didn't have depth for SZ integrated. Long story short: Finalists were Miele & SZ. But we get frequent power outages here which Miele is built for and SZ is not. That was the deciding factor. Most decide on features like layout etc. Many like their Thermadors and that would have fit. But I didn't care for the interior quality and was unsure about service in my area. It also was nearly as much as Miele and I knew their quality & service. I personally loathe the taste of fridge water so water in the fridge -- apart from ice -- is the last thing I'd ever want. I do miss that slim full width drawer in my Viking as it gave me 3 big drawers vs 2 in the Miele. The little deli drawer is OK. It can be removed but I cram it full. The two big crisper drawers are very deep and hold a ton. But the big difference is the openness of the shelves. What I like best is the door racks which are super sturdy and hold all our drinks. The fridge is quiet (there are some faint compressor noises but my Vike was so noisy we could hear it upstairs), temperature is excellent. Freezer is excellent with 2 shelves I like a lot. Aesthetically, I wasn't mad for the look of the huge SZ grill which I would have had protruding from the cabinets with a standard install. Mieles vent is behind the freezer door on the bottom. That makes the compartment higher than the SZ's. The Miele lighting is outstanding. You can see everything even when the fridge is crowded. It was also about $800 less than the same style SZ here. Nice benefit since I had to pay for install. But either one is a good choice. When I compared them feature to feature it was a tough decision....See MoreSub zero drawers vs fisher and paykel cool drawers ?
Comments (4)What do you plan to use it for? Freezer only or both? I just got the SZ freezer drawers and absolutely love them. I chose them so that I could get a narrower fridge (30" SZ column) and more countertop without giving up the capacity of our old 36" fridge (in fact I now have more capacity than I had before). I didn't compare too closely to the FP so can't comment on it. I can fit soooo much in the drawers, much more than I expected, I'm very impressed. And they are almost silent which is huge to me (the fridge is even better, completely silent). The under-counter freezer arrangement with a separate fridge has so many benefits that my in-laws copied my idea, though they chose a bar-fridge style freezer instead (either Perlick or Marvel, can't remember, panelled with beautiful SS basket drawers inside). Other than missing the ice maker that my SZ drawers have, it is a fantastic high quality option for a mere $5500 less (CAD). Happy as I am, this would have also worked for me and I'm kinda wishing I went that route....See MorePackages: Wolf/Sub-Zero vs Thermador vs Jenn-Air
Comments (7)Who are you buying them from? If it's a large independent dealer, you should be able to do just as well getting the appliances you want rather than the "packages" which are designed by the makers to make you think you have to stick with them so make them more money. Most appliance stores have a discount for contractors and interior designers. Usually the same percentage (10-20% depending on local custom, usually more in the 10-15% range). Sometimes, there will be more for one or the other group because of connections, volume, promotion, whim etc. Since you're doing a major remodel and looking at mid- to high- end appliances, I'm thinking you have at least a general contractor, or maybe a plumber/gc. Even if you don't, since you're buying a whole suite of appliances, the store may give you the contractor's discount anyway. If that isn't possible, you still have negotiating room. While the store may be locked into fairly narrow contracted price floors (as if they were selling fine art!), they have other ways they can give you discounts. They can give you a free dishwasher, for instance (a common occurrence), and/or free delivery and/or installation. They may also pay for an extended warranty, though those aren't worth nearly as much, dollar for dollar, as something tangible. They're more for emotional support. So, given that, I'd choose SZ/Wolf or Thermador. Thermador may cost less (depending on exchange) and it's fine. Wolf has great ovens, but there are a few potential problems (I think the jury is still out on whether they've 100% beaten an issue with the enamel). I prefer the layout of the SubZero refrigerators. If you're getting gas, I love the Wolf double stacked burners. I prefer Thermador's dishwasher to the Asko, which is what I think you get with SZ/W. That's without even considering Miele, Liebherr, BlueStar ranges, etc....See MorePerlick or Sub-Zero Undercounter Beverage Center
Comments (9)We've had a Sub-Zero for about a year and like it. It's quiet and chills our wine nicely. It has two temperature zones which is nice for reds and white. I also looked at the Perlick and can't remember there being a huge difference between the two. I think I chose Sub-Zero because I knew I would get great service form Wolf-Sub-Zero if anything went wrong and the racks seemed to roll a bit nicer....See More- 9 years ago
