d: drive?

i have older desktop. reloaded win xp. it can see my C drive. says there is a D drive and a E:dvd-r drive. but the D drive is not hooked up. no power, no other connectors attached to it. it failed to run several years ago so i just unhooked it. why can system see it? yes i have 2 cd-dvd drives in tower. the E drive is my only drive. works fine.

If your old d drive was removed,, D is available for another drive which sounds like you have 2 cd ?

A single physical hard drive can be broken into multiple logical partitions which will show up as a "drive." If this is a name brand computer, it's quite common for a single drive to be partitioned into two logic partitions, the second or "D" drive is often used to store the recovery files.

ok that makes more sense, I had wondered how they crammed another drive in there LOL yes they are both totally independent of each other so each partition has to have it's own programs installed. Just watch out with 7 that programs are compatible with it. You can go to some of the windows 7 team sites and blogs they discuss programs they have tried that work or don't. That is actually a smart move to have the partition with 7 on it that way as soon as it goes public you have a partition ready to install the public release to because it will not be an upgrade from XP for those it will have to be a wipe clean and full install of 7.

You may want to contact Dell's corporate headquarters to file a complaint. Last Fall I purchased an HP laptop and by Feb. the touchpad had stopped responding and the hard drive was failing. Short story, I returned it for repair 3 times and it still wasn't fixed (they replaced the hard drive twice and never fixed the touchpad issue). When it was returned the third time they said I would have to go through the whole process again before they would "maybe consider" replacing it. I contacted HP's headquarters and they arranged for new replacement laptop that is a better one than the one I purchased and are providing a $250 gift card, as well. Also, when I purchased a Dell a few years ago its motherboard was defective. Initially they offered to replace the motherboard but I said I wanted a new replacement and they sent one, so they can do it. You shouldn't wait for the full year so AMEX's warranty kicks in b/c you will be without the use of your laptop in the meantime.

went into disc management. c drive is not partitioned for d drive. there is a small 32mg fat partition and a larger 80gb ntfs partition for system. but it is an old dell machine. maybe they have some special oem scheme going on.

I have been trying to correct the same problem with my HP with Vista 32 bit. After reformatting, it is there but doesn't stay long. I tried to find a fix but everything I found required a fix in the registry. In my own research I did find the fix he used, but was afraid to try it on my own and I still had a warranty. I finally called a tech and he walked me to the MS site and had me download a fix for it. Worked. I saved the fix, but it's on my lap top. If you think it could help you I will see if I can find out where I got it and the name.

system sees devices with removable storage. removable disk (D:) and DVD-RW drive (E:). perhaps it is confused when it sees the dvd drive and is expecting to find a cd-rw drive which is how it was built.
