Epson Printer Doesn't

My 2 y.o. Epson CX3810 printer is intermittant on which lines it will print with black ink. If I change the color, it works fine.

Changing the ink cartridge doesn't change the result. The electrical contacts on the black ink cartridge, though, do not all look like they have had good contact with the contacts in the printer. I'm thinking that, perhaps, I could partially disassemble the printer to improve the contact.

If this sounds like a good approach, how do I open up the printer to get the access I need to the cartridge holder?

First I'd go to www.fixyourownprinter.com and check out all the information there on your Epson. Epsons are not highly rated as they waste too much ink and clog far too easily. With the changes in Epson ink formulations to make it difficult for generic ink suppliers, the clogging gets worse. That website has a link to cleaning supplies that do work with no damage to your machine. You might check out UTube for instructions on making an external waste ink collector before you get the dreaded "end of service life" error message. With Epsons, prevention is everything.

Same thing happened with the C86 that I had. By some dumb quirk, I had purchased the extended warranty, as it was only 20 bucks. It had gobbled that expensive ink at an alarming rate, but just after normal warranty was over, it did the same thing as in your original post. I did get my purchase price returned, but what an aggravation. They do have a class action suit being brought against them for this reason.

It's funny that I chose an Epson because the hospital where I worked had them for all the management offices. The one they had when was a supervisor was a workhorse and never broke down. I never liked the one I bought as much as the office printer. Nancy

Also, are those refilled cartridges ? Are they newly replaced ? or they've been in there for a while. And how old is that printer and how many cartridges would you guess you've gone through. Because many printers have a little sponge at the end that catches the ink from cleaning. And it can get filled up and overflow - it might muck up the print head I would think. Also, did you take the cartridges out and physically clean them ? It's a bit of a delicate operation as you don't want to damage them or plug them up any further. If you take them out, see if you can look down around where they park and see if that sponge pad is filled with ink. Just a thought.

With any printer, once you give the print command, you should get a screen on your monitor that allows you to make certain changes/choices. For example, if it's a multi-page document, you can indicate which pages you want printed (if you don't want to print the entire document). You should also be able to select/deselect duplex printing, as well as printing a color document/photo in black and white. You may need to click on "properties" or "advanced" to get those selections, but they will be there.

Poor Epson--------

I LOVE mine. Yes it does gobble up ink but I am in my glory at printing labels on my TY Watershield printable disks.
