Lost FTM data in recycle bin

GT5468 computer with Vista. Family Tree Maker genealogy program, 2009.

Decided to clean up my screen and get rid of all those little unused icons. Dropped things into recycle bin. Have not emptied bin.

I can get the FTM icon (shortcut) back but the data does not come with it. Have tried "Restore" from the recycle bin.

Have tried Gateway Recovery Center. (Repair.. with disc of FTM in place..still no data except with the home person)

Can't find a backup disc for FTM data.

Tried resetting the date to a few days earlier. Nothing.

Geek Squad set up the new computer last year and moved data from old machine to new, but I have no way or knowledge to do this. Don't want to pay $150 for them to come out, unless I have no alternative.

Would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

I don't use this product, but in Googling "local data loss in Family Tree Maker 2009", it appears that the data *may* be stored online. When was the last time you accessed the lost data? Is there a manual for information? It would be helpful to find out where on your computer the data files are stored. You'll likely need to visit the FTM website for detailed help unless someone that uses the application knows the answer and reads this question. Try looking in your My Documents folder for a Family Tree Maker folder.

Oops, I just noticed that in Vista, the data folder is under your C drive.

Does FTM still start up on your computer? You can go to the recycle bin, right click and restore anything and everything under normal circumstances. However in your case you have tried a Restore and I have no idea how that might affect the recycle bin.

Does Family Tree Maker use the file suffix of .ftm? Why not try a search. click Start, click All programs - with Vista I think you now click on Accessories, then click Search. Type in *.ftm and see what that brings up. The *star indicates a wild card, in other words we are searching for anything and everything with the .ftm suffix if there are any such files.

Failing that right click on Start, click Explore.
Now look on the left side and click the plus sign beside C: - if it is already clicked it will show a - minus sign. Look down the list underneath for Program files and click the plus sign beside that. Now look further down the same list for your Family Tree folder and click the plus sign beside it.

Once that is done start looking on the right side of your screen for anything indicating your data.

How many generations do you have recorded so far? Nothing to do with the issue but more of an interested inquiry LOL.

I know a lot of people say you can't start seeds without a grow light setup and heat mat, but I've been successfully starting all kinds of seeds every year with just a south-facing window. Sometimes there are leggy seedlings, especially if we've had a lot of overcast days when they sprout, but I've planted them deeper if possible and they've worked out just fine. To be honest, I see the minimal requirements for a beginner gardener to be a few tools like spade and trowel, seeds, and seed starting soil. Not much expense at all. Like the rest of us, gardeners just catching the bug this year will collect up the rest over the next couple of years, fencing next year IF they have a problem with deer or rabbits, maybe a canner or dehydrator the year after when they get more confident and enlarge their tomato patch. If they REALLY catch the gardening bug, a rain barrel or composter. If they want to get into a competition with their neighbours for the earliest tomato, they can get a heat mat and grow light setup to get a jump start on the year. They can try all sort of different tomato cages to see which ones suit their needs best. Keep in mind these things are optional and free alternatives are possible. I use hockey sticks with broken blades from the arena for my tomato stakes. (Nice and sturdy!) Composters can easily be made with free materials or just a compost heap used. A drum to use as a rain barrel can be found for free from some places, but plastic food grade drums can be bought for less than $20.00 if you're willing to cut the top off yourself. Seeds can be started in a south window using free materials. Someone suggested yogurt containers, which is a great idea. Check recycling bins if you don't buy yogurt for yourself. Most soil is at least marginally OK for growing plants so replacing your own soil with topsoil is optional. For those who have really bad soil, some form of lasagna gardening might suffice. We all want the best soil but sometime we have to work with what we got, yet we still manage to get food out of the ground. My point is...for those of you who are just starting out, don't be discouraged by what is being said in this thread. Sometimes, gardening is just as easy as sticking a plant in the dirt and letting it grow. It doesn't have to be expensive and it doesn't have to be backbreaking. As you learn and get experience, then think about expanding the garden and canning food for the winter.

Outsmarting the tree rats (squirrels) around my house is a full time job. This past spring I hit on a new idea. When I plant a container I invert an empty wire hanging basket over the container and the plant gets sun and can be watered but the squirrels can't dig in it. Another idea: I bring in a lot of plants to "over winter" under lights in my garage. I have so many that it is hard to reach my hand under the lights (4 shop lights) to the middle for watering. So I bought a pump sprayer with a long wand and it works great! In late winter I add a little liquid Dawn detergent, few drops, to each gallon of water and not only does the soil get wet easier but the worms that are waiting to hatch into distructive pets just don't hatch. Don't know what it costs me to run those four shop lights all winter but I don't care. It is a small price to pay to be able to "garden" every weekend in the garage. Many people have mentioned that they mark their outdoor plants with a "permanent Sharpie". In my experience there isn't a "permanent Sharpie", they all fade and quickly too. A grease pencil/china marker or expensive "no fade" garden center marker are the only markers I have found that won't disappoint you by fading. Eight years ago I decided to learn about gardening so I tapped into my local library. I checked out nearly every book they had on gardening and learned so much. The Gardenweb forums are also a wealth of information and entertainment. There is always something new to learn and I appreciate all of you who take the time to write in your ideas. One last idea from me...I keep a small notebook on my computer table and jot down any idea I find that's new and I will want to try. Little pieces of paper get lost but I always know where my notebook is and also use it when I order "on line" so I will remember the name of the company and the order date. Tina or Trowelgal

I reran Malwarebytes (the 3rd run) as instructed. It reported "The scan completed successfully. No malicious items were detected." I have a copy of the happy details which I can post here if you still want to see them. I rescanned with Spybot and this time it gave me the bright green all-okay check mark and made no mention of virtumonde.sci. I retried the TrendMicro Housecall and it made its way through all the C and D files and I think through the grayware/spyware category when it came to a halt and the dreaded box appeared saying "An error occurred while trying to transfer data from the Internet. Do you want Trend Micro Housecall to try resendingÂ". I did retry several times but the box reappeared repeatedly. At the time, the progress tab on the left showed the program was "updating security check information". Trying to learn what I could, I clicked on the results tab and it showed ADWARE_MEMWATCHER (98 infections) but the program and computer were frozen there and I could only close the browser. I did have AdAware installed on my computer but uninstalled it in July 2008. I uninstalled using the Add/Remove feature, I uninstalled because of a thread in this forum related to compatibility issues between Spybot and AdAware. Anyway, I digress, but IÂm relating these events in the order they appeared. I came back to this forum to report and saw additional instructions about disabling TeaTimer, etc. In trying to find out how to do so, I was in Spybot and clicked on the recovery tab. There I found a backup for virtumonde.sci. The system wouldnÂt allow copy and paste of what it was saving in backup so I copied it manually (and hopefully without error). I was talking about how to hilight more than one line as in a whole section or in a list several items at one time as a block. place the cursor at the very beginning of the word or phrase that you're trying to highlight, before the first letter. hold down the "Shift" key and keep it held down. now go to the end of the list or section/block that you want to highlight place the cursor at the end and click. that entire section should now be highlighted and ready to select. "Many USB devices (and certainly all flash/pen drives) draw power from the USB port itself for their functioning. Yanking off a device without using safely remove feature could affect both the device and the port. Certain operating systems do delayed writes to devices to optimize writing. If this is the case with the operating system in question, there is a risk of data getting corrupted if the device is pulled out abruptly. Writes could continue even after the operating system signals that the writing is over. If the light on your device is blinking, it means that it is in use and should not be pulled out." FTM 2009 uses the extension .ftm while previous versions used .ftw. I would do a search for *.ftw and if that doesn't produce anything try *.ftm. If you open FTM and click File > open does it show any files at all? Might try a search for *.ftmb, that's FTM 2009 labels backups.

Today is my day for losing things! Started a reply and lost it. No telling where it will turn up.

Thanks to all of you dear generous people, I FOUND that which was lost. Did as you suggested... searched for *.ftm and all the data showed up. Such a relief. I now will make sure I get it all backed up before I lose it again.

Pam, thanks for the link. Owbist, I have 22 generations on one line. Now if the other lines were from people who could read and write or who got off the spaceship at the right place....

Thank goodness you found your files, especially with so many already catalogued. I think at this point it would be very wise to burn them all to a CD for safety.
