I would like to know the exact location of where to put a

.dll file. No great need I just want to know.

Is it OK to extract to system32 or do I need to extract to

dllcache. (dllcache is a hidden operating system file)

Example:

kernel32.dll is stored in dllcache, maybe all dll, I don't know.

To restate my question.

Extract to system32 or dllcache?

I would say C:\WINDOWS\system32
There are already a lot of .dll files located there.

Never heard of extracting to a dllcache, don't even know if it's possible.

Thanks Randy, I just wanted to be sure.
I've never had a reason to try.

Raven: I promised to get back to you on this matter.But had to get my computer able to get online. I did as you suggested, But found nothing but a few click cookies. No Spyware , and no Malware. So I went to a site that told me how to repair Hal,Dll. Followed to a tee, Well that turned out to be a fiasco. Was told I could get a backup, of this file from Windows service pack 2. Then copy the folder, and go to Windows sytem 32 folder and show all files. Then find Hal.Dll. folder and paste it into the folder. If ask to overwrite. To say yes. Well then I turned off computer to try the safe mode and see if it reported the file correctly. Needless to say. Ouch, Windows would not then boot at all. So could not even go back and fix the windows file. So still tryed to do a complete restore with a format. Still could not get computer to read the disk.Finally, I thought maybe my problem is with my drawer . So called my nephew who has extra computer parts lying around.Sure enuff. He unplugged my drawer and used his. And it immediately started to read and I was able to do a complete recovery.I had two drawers one was a cd R/W and the other was A dvd R/W . Lost the cdr/w last year and then the dvd R/w this year. So Had to replace both. But am up and running well again. This computer Is a 3 year old Gateway. What a piece of trash. I also wonder do you have a firewall and have you tried dropping your firewall and trying to get your pc to connect, it could be something changed in your settings and your firewall is blocking something. Also have you done all your windows updates for your pc? the references I have seen to the dll files you mentioned are all very very old and seem to have been fixed by windows updates, also most were involving Ie6 which version of IE do you have? The reason I ask about sp3 is that it has been found that people who did the sp3 update are now unable to get their updates to .net. There have been some work arounds for that issue. Article about that for anyone interested. XP Service Pack 3 blocks .NET security patches http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 and yet another question have you done all your java updates on that pc? and do you also have firefox browser? from what I have read those missing dll files should not be keeping you from connecting, they seem to be related to being able to click on links in webpages and having it take you to the appropriate pages. So I think you have 2 different problems, one the connect issue and 2 the dll problem. go to your event viewer Start> control panel> administrative tools> event viewer > there you will see 3 options in the left list double click each to open their logs look in each one to see if you have any red or yellow flags there, if you do you can hilight each one of those by clicking it then double click to open the info box on each item, look for any thing that says what is happening and what is causing it and any error codes.

Now if you've downloaded a program in a zip file and it has a .dll that needs to be extracted, it would be extracted to
C:\Program Files\whatever program.

I am still having problems with this whole business of extracting .dll files.
Exact location.
and
Will they start to function.
I know they can be put at any location with the Wizard.
I will probably let this go for now until I get further information.

Huh?

I must have installed 50 mods that are .dll files. I might be missing something here, but they all come in various compressed formats and the appropriate unzipper is needed (which are free) to extract them to either my choice of a created folder for manual installation or a direct extract to their designated folder (in my case the game's data file folder containing meshes and textures etc.) I usually go for a manual drag n'drop installation because extracting them into their designated folder sometimes just doesn't happen.

What exactly are you trying to install (that might be some help)?

I hope I found what I needed. Shown on my last post.

Thanks anyway. I just tamper with one part of my computer
or another just to learn and have something to do. It's a wonder it keeps working.
I guess I would try this first if I ever have a need.

1. Press Start and select Run
2. Type CMD and press Enter
3. Type regsvr32 "filename".dll and press Enter

If this doesn't work than I will try a specific location.`

The compressed download file should have a target that you can xtract directly to. Well, good luck.
