Bathroom fixtures - is my list complete?

Meeting with the plumbing house again tomorrow to go over my list and make some changes. I just want to make sure the list is complete - other than for things like towel bars, which I'll figure out later.

Can anyone tell me if I'm missing anything, especially anything critical for starting the renovation?

Btw, I know I can get most of this cheaper online, but there's no one home during the day to take delivery, and my contractor assures me if anything turns out to be wrong with any of the stuff, he has a lot of clout with the plumbing supply house to provide replacements very quickly. And actually, the prices turned out to be better than I'd feared (though not, perhaps, as good as I'd hoped ;-)).

Anyway, thanks for perusing my list - please let me know if this looks right!!

You'll probably eventually want some fixtures that are more decorative than functional -- towel racks and the like -- but they can wait til next year's Restoration Hardware bath sale. (Can you guess where I've been drooling?)

The thermostatic valve should have a rough in with service stops. Not sure of the difference, but Hansgrohe quoted me a wall outlet with vacuum breaker. Other than that, everything you have listed is everything Hansgrohe gave me as a shopping list.

FlyLeft - thanks! Yes - you are correct - 36" is the ADA standard for door openings. However, because this bathroom was built for our personal use, we bent some of the ADA standards to suit our needs. We decided on the 30" opening because of the size of the bathroom as a whole - any wider opening would have greatly reduced the size of the wall enclosure. My husband simply rolls his chair slightly into the opening & then backs up as necessary. He designed the middle of the bathroom so that he can easily turn around in a circle. Riverview111 - In hindsight, I think we would have extended the waterproofing. The hotmopping went as far as where the 2 wall openings are: You are right - the entire shower floor slopes towards the drain 1/4 inch/foot. We have had no major problems with water "run-out/off" - it is probably helped by the fact that our main shower fixture is ceiling mounted rather than extended from a wall. I think however, because of his height (6'3") there is more splash onto the main floor. I'm just making that assumption because there's virtually no splash when I'm taking a shower (I'm 5'1"). Again - my husband just asked me to emphasize that because he designed the bathroom for his needs and the space, we did bend ADA design to meet his needs - at 6'3", safety bars, placement of fixtures, sink heights, etc...were decided on for his height. Follow Ups to Questions 2: The entire construction process was probably 8 weeks elapsed. There were holidays, weather problems, you name it. The actual schedule was bizarre. A week or so of demo in March, an unexpected 6 month hiatus, then back again for November & December and final details in January. The time after demo turned out to be a good thing as we changed many items and even the actual design - all for the better. The room dimensions are a bit irregular. The area of marble floor is 7ft x 7ft. The tub is 3 ft wide, so the room more or less is 7x10 (not including the little alcoves at the head of the tub and shower areas). The ceiling height is a little over 9 ft. The JVI light is "large" and the bottom is probably at 6'9" or so (we made sure all contractors' heads cleared). We removed several links of chain to get the right height. Not sure the large light would work with an eight foot ceiling looking at it now. One of the other similar styles would do the trick though. As for the Amma, I didn't notice the slope to be all that different - but I might not have been paying attention. This only a 66" tub - not a lot of room. What I did notice is the curved back. For me, the flat back was not as comfortable as the curve. The other things that I looked for in my search were arm rests and grab bars. These two items I use every time I get in or out. Thanks for posting the pictures. After seeing your bathroom I was dying to see your husband's bath and you did not disappoint (I mean I am still alive; and thrilled). This is a great job. Very welcoming, warm, and cozy! Kudos to your wife and you for the tile choices. I love the way you and/or your tiler chose to place the tiles. The floor tiles are fun, the way they form diamonds, instead of making random wavy directions. I also love the shower tiles in a vertical running bond pattern. Again, they were not randomly lain, the tiler gave some thought to direction of the flow of the grain. I especially like that you tiled to the ceiling. I admire the bits of shiny bling, especially the mirror. It is very pretty, balancing the masculine "rock" messages sent out by the dark tile on the floor right in front of the vanity. My DH and I will be turning our only full bath into a shower-only and it is just a bit bigger than your room. It is good to see that you, after giving up the master to her mom, can find a bit of luxury in your smaller guest bathroom!

What are service stops? (I actually asked the salesperson this and she said I didn't need them - but I'm not convinced about her technical expertise. ;-))

Asked her about the vacuum breaker too. She thought I didn't need it, and I felt more comfortable with that answer since Hansgrohe's other models of wall unions don't seem to have vacuum breakers. But maybe I should look into that...

Can't wait to start shopping for something easy like towel bars.

Never purchase anything online, unless it's too good to pass up. You will have issues and there will not be someone there, especially with a complete bathroom remodel to help you with a part missing, etc.

It's your choice on teh stops, if there is ever an issue with the valve the stops will allow you to remove the trim plate and turn off the water. However, I must say that I have never had a bad Hansgrohe valve. The water outlet with a vaccum breaker is now a code thing, so depending on where you are you may or may not have to have it.

Your list is pretty comprehensive. You will need finished lavatory supplies. I am assuming you are doing a chrome finish otherwise you will need a trip lever as it comes standard in chrome. I would forgo the Kohler waste and overflow(drain) as it is way overpriced and ask for a Mountain Plumbing cable driven (if that is the route you are going) or a Rapid Fit type lift and turn drain which would save you alot more. (the Kohler p-trap is overpriced as well)

Thanks, hyerground - good point about the trip lever. I'm using brushed nickel for everything, and it didn't even occur to me I should look at trip levers! (Actually, I didn't know you could replace the one that comes with the toilet!)

I'll look into the Mountain Plumbing drains. The Kohler p-trap may be overpriced, but it's pretty. :-)

In terms of online prices vs. what I'm getting from the plumbing supplier - I'm happy to report that they turned out to be surprisingly competitive. I'm paying a *little* more than I would have online (and I'm paying sales tax - ouch!), but overall, I'm quite pleased. The only thing that seemed very overpriced was the Toto toilet, and I asked them to lower the price on it - and they did. Pays to ask. :-)

charlikin, just curious if you'd share what you paid locally for your Hansgrohe set up only. I couldn't get anywhere close to what I paid online - it was a massive difference. The place I bought from is an authorized dealer, so if I have issues they are alleviated by Hansgrohe - same if I had purchased locally.

These were all "a la carte" items as Hansgrohe didn't have a set that contained the pieces I needed, and of course I fell in love with one of Hansgrohe's more expensive trim styles (in brushed nickel, yet). After adding it all up, the difference in price between faucetdirect.com (my "reference site") and my plumbing supply house was only about $50 total.

They were a little more overpriced on the Toto toilet and tub, but still not egregiously, and I like knowing that if something comes in damaged, I don't have to figure out how to ship a tub back!

I found the same thing with Hansgrohe items -- I purchased them from a large specialty kitchen/bath place here in SoCal (Pacific Sales) and only paid about $50 more than faucetdirect. It was well worth it to have the rough-in valve the next day, and the extremely helpful staff watching out for my order.

BTW, we got the rough-in with the stops. The contractor/plumber says it makes the plumber's job much easier if they ever have to service the valve later and the cost difference was minor.

Oh, and lastly -- I LOVE the Hansgrohe shower valve and showerhead (T/S III and Retroaktiv) -- what an absolute pleasure. If I could just read in the shower...
