This posting was about products, but your tile comment brings up the most important factor in this room's success -- our terrific team and starting with our contractors. We did not work with a designer or architect so they became even more important. My biggest piece of advice would be to wait until you find exactly the right people to help you. Our crew never settled for "good enough" and are even more exacting than we were (really hard to do). The work underneath the tile is almost as impressive as the incredible tile work. If you'd like we will post more detail or construction pictures - just say so.

Besides our contractor, our plumbing supplier was invaluable. We did not lose time by finding out after the fact that pieces and parts did not work or forgetting to order items. She knew every manufacturer's quirks and/or limitations and easily offered alternatives for cost or aesthetics. The same goes for the tile folks. This was a new supplier for them, and they worked with us when things weren't just quite right to make them completely right.

Last, a plug for the local folks - whenever possible we purchased locally. In the world of the "big box" stores and/or "internet based" suppliers, it was a welcome relief to work with local businesses with real people who saved us a lot of time and money by not having to do it twice and having our best interest in mind. Do we really want cities with no local businesses and no way to see and feel products before we buy?

How inspiring! I've just logged back in after a year or so away. We are finally about to start our own bathroom reno after beginning a total house reno 4 years ago... I think I've decided on an air tub too--so many people say they just never use their whirlpool---I have a question,,, can you hear the TV when the air is on? Or is the TV mainly for while you're at the sink?

P.S. Your before looks pretty good...(You should see mine) I thought it was the finished bathroom at first!

WOW! That is just gorgeous! I love the carrara marble everywhere. I am curious why you chose to use the 6X6 over the 3X12 in the shower? I'm ready to renovate my master bath and the tile designer suggested I use the 6X6 over the 3X6 subway tile on the shower walls but in a diamond pattern.

Also, do you just have a handheld shower head or do you also have a regular fixed shower head? How do you like it? Is the top of the shower head plastic?

I am also intrigued by the wall hung toilet. I never considered installing one until I saw yours. What were your reasons, other than being able to clean under it, which is a very big pro in my book? How is it held up?

First, thanks for all the complements.

raehelen: Depends on how loud the TV is! The air tub is great, but not particularly quiet even with the motor in the attic. But listening to TV is difficult with the air going, but great if you are just soaking or the morning weather etc. Go try an air tub - look at the Bain site for bed & breakfasts near you that feature their products if possible. It was fun to justify as research. As for the before picture, yeah, it's a good picture. What it doesn't show is the cracking cultured marble top, crumbling grout, cracked toilet, cracked plaster and no tub. But it did have some charm.

Dazed: The bottom half of the shower tile is 3x12 and the top is 6x6 to change it up a bit. The shower head is a hand held, not a fixed, not a rain shower. Several reasons, first we kinda like a regular shower head, second didn't want to clutter it up more, third like the hand held for flexibility (cleaning the shower, pets, etc.). It' all about tradeoffs & priorities. As for the toilet, I like the wall hung for many reasons. In no particular order, some of the benefits include: 1) being able to decide how high to place the bowl, â¨2) easy to clean the floor with nothing under it, â¨3) it takes up less space - protrudes into the room about 20" depending on which bowl you choose, â¨4) quiet, â¨5) personal opinion - looks pretty cool.
All for about the same price as a regular toilet.

My parents have had theirs for a long time with no problems. This company's products have been used in Europe for years & years - we are the ones who are behind.

LOVE the JVI melon jar light! Is that a small, medium, or large? How long is the chain & how high is your ceiling? I'm trying to figure out whether it would still look as good if my ceiling is less than 9 feet high.

catherineri, sometimes my brain takes a vacation and I don't get the memo! I too have TVs mounted to the wall with no closet on the other side (lol). I was thinking about the bathroom mirrors I've seen that have a tv in the glass. I wanted to do that when we remodeled but DH said there needed to be a closet on the other side. Ours was an outside wall.

Follow Ups to Questions 2:
The entire construction process was probably 8 weeks elapsed. There were holidays, weather problems, you name it. The actual schedule was bizarre. A week or so of demo in March, an unexpected 6 month hiatus, then back again for November & December and final details in January. The time after demo turned out to be a good thing as we changed many items and even the actual design - all for the better.

The room dimensions are a bit irregular. The area of marble floor is 7ft x 7ft. The tub is 3 ft wide, so the room more or less is 7x10 (not including the little alcoves at the head of the tub and shower areas). The ceiling height is a little over 9 ft. The JVI light is "large" and the bottom is probably at 6'9" or so (we made sure all contractors' heads cleared). We removed several links of chain to get the right height. Not sure the large light would work with an eight foot ceiling looking at it now. One of the other similar styles would do the trick though.

As for the Amma, I didn't notice the slope to be all that different - but I might not have been paying attention. This only a 66" tub - not a lot of room. What I did notice is the curved back. For me, the flat back was not as comfortable as the curve. The other things that I looked for in my search were arm rests and grab bars. These two items I use every time I get in or out. Must be getting old.

Your bathroom is beautiful. I love your long narrow shower. What are the actual dimensions? Are you using your body sprays?

The shower is my last stumbling block1 UGH!

The shower is about 33" x54". It works very well for me, but I'm not a huge person. Love the body sprays. I put the lowest one at very low back height instead of thigh height (typical placement). So research where you want yours. These are grohe - very small and can be individually turned off or on, as well as swivel.
