Dell Laptop

I recenbtly ordered a battery for my Dell laptop which was a replacement, not a Dell brand battery, but one that was exactly like the Dell brand battery and sold as a replacement. When it was installed, the computer would not recognize the replacement battery. Is there anyway to get my Dell laptop to recognize a replacement battery?

Does the Laptop work if you use the ac adapter only

Is it an Inspiron? If so what model # is it.

The laptop works great with the battery, just getting weak and need a new one. It is an Inspiron e1705.

They are Flash Games on their web sites. They open up fine on my desktop XP but not on my Vista laptop. When I got the laptop from Dell everything was preset with small fonts so I went in to change to my liking but I can't get the mail at Yahoo [the rest of the Yahoo home page is ok] and all games don't get large. I'm sure it's a simple setting but can't seem to find it. I've changed DPI to large and fonts in the appearance section and view all to large but it's still the same. Too small and unreadable. I'm using IE 8. Thanks

I used to take the battery out of my old toshiba and it lasted at least 4 yrs before I broke the laptop. I'd store it at slightly less than full charge when removed from the computer. New toshiba I replaced that broken laptop with the instructions say leave the battery inplace all the time as it only charges when its capacity is something like below 94% of charge. Its really rare that I see its charging light glowing. It's a year and a half old and still always shows and acts like it has full capacity as when new. I don't often use it on battery but when I do I try to let it run untill it warns me its low. The battery placement in the new laptop is located in a very cool to touch section of the laptop so heat certainly shouldn't be an issue degrading it by leaving it plugged in & the lith-ion type batteries do not self discharge and leak down as quickly as some types will. eBay usually has some new replacements at auction that if you inquire, usually they will have a date code that's about a year old but certainly less moneys.

Snidely - good point about not removing things if they're not causing trouble - lest they turn out to have been needed. So I have left some things that I have no idea about. I did delete Dell Stage - bc. it's a real pain - gets in the way all the time (my daughter who's had this on her laptop for 2 years confirmed that it's just in the way). I did all the microsoft updates, ran a few antivirus, got rid of what I want to get rid of, and it's mostly good to go. Here's the trouble that remains: I can't get the printer working. It's a Canon Pixma MX850 - on the home network. I did not want to install the Canon disk bc. it has a ton of it's own bloatware. So I went to Canon and downloaded the driver - as well as the IJ utility software (I think that helps the computer find a printer on the network). Went to devices and printers, added the printer and made it the default printer. It shows up in printers and devices, but when I go to print something, it fails. Troubleshooting says the test page didn't print bc. something else is in the queue. But there is nothing else in the queue. I opened the queue from my pain desktop (that's connected to the printer) - and there's no documents in the queue. Went to the printer queue on DH's lapto; - it also shows nothing in the queue. I can print from other computers. Don't know what else to do. And I just remembered that I did not see Java. It didnt come up as needing updating when I ran the Secunia scan. I am not sure which programs need it, but can imagine my husband being stumped if he tries to do something that needs Java and asks him to install. I'd like to install it for him. Got to remember that. I also have a question about Microsoft Security Essentials. Twice now it found something bad - and I selected to remove the couple of files. Does this AV just run in the background or do I also need to run scans? Thank you. Lynn.

With all the after Thanksgiving sales going on in the states (if that's where you are)I would check your local fliers for better deals. Keep the specs for that one and see if you can find another (Toshiba, HP, Acer) with same or better specs for less money

Sorry I didn't read the thread properly. Yes it does work fine with the ac adapter. I just want a new battery because the old one won't hold a charge for more than a few minutes. I need the laptop to be mobile. Battery I ordered was not a Dell brand, it was a replacemenbt for the Dell brand. It fits perfectly but the laptop does not recognize it and won't charge. I just don't know why my laptop will not recognize any battery but Dell brand. Does anyone know why and what I can do to use this battery in my laptop?

I'm sorry I posted this yesterday but it never posted as a result of wild Blue connection,

I think you need to call Dell or contact them. There are so many complaints on this, and so many claimed fixes or ideas like flashing the BIOS, replacing the adapter or trying yet another battery because the one you have may be defective.

Inspiron e1705 will not recognize battery That's what I goggled in bold to attempt to find a solution, I didn't see one.

Zep, thanks for all your info. The Dell brand battery is very expensive and I was hoping to spend less money.

I know but there seems to be so many users complaining about " will not recognize battery" issue, but I'm not sure if every case is in fact a non Dell battery issue. I just think if you purchase a Dell battery you would have a better leg to stand on if in fact you still had the issue with a new Dell battery and it could be possible, you know in case you had to call Dell. Right know if you call Dell there going to tell you that you're using the wrong battery. I would not doubt if there is a circuit on the mother board that detects the dell battery only and forces the user to buy Dell battery only----It's a guess...

I searched it.. the AC adapter cord seemed to be the prob em on most. Apparently if the cord is damaged the new battery to charge pulls more current from adapter and the bios thinks its the wrong battery if cord is damaged or ac adapter has some kind of fault.

Wires in that cord are tiny so easy to squish one stepping on it which might be the problem.. Straighten or round out any of the flat spots or kinks in the cord with your fingers maybe ??? I had something once on my Toshiba that playing with the adapter cord fixed it.... I try to avoid stepping on that cord ever since & no problems.
