Kerdi & tile on shower ceiling question
Comments (8)I just did a kerdi shower ceiling with 12x24 tiles. I used unmodifed thinset per kerdi directions. I used laticrete 317. I know versabond will work (but its lightly-modified) and would void the Kerdi warranty if used. The 12x24 will stick just fine. It's no different than doing a 12x12 because even though it is twice as heavy, it has twice the surface area to hold it. I did back butter each tile. When I tried to pull one down to check coverage it was really stuck up there! My biggest problem was that I started tiling from the center to the sides and i have a slanted ceiling so the tiles wanted to slide out of postion. if I had started at the wall and used spacers it would have been easier....See MoreKerdi the walls before pouring concrete floor?
Comments (8)Concrete is still fluid after it has been placed. Even if you screed/trowel it to a perfect slope from perimeter to drain, it can creep a bit during the initial cure. For showers on slabs, I recommend having them box out the shower area, place a secondary box around the drain stub out, and pouring a dropped slab in that area, with the secondary box keeping concrete away from the drain stub. Then come back a few days later and do a drypack preslope on top of the dropped slab. I'd never count on a concrete crew to build my preslope. And do not Kerdi the walls until after the concrete crew is long gone. Do it before hand and you'll have concrete splatter all over the Kerdi and maybe a couple of dings in the Kerdi too. "...allowing 3/4" for Kerdi, thinset and tile..." Kerdi with bedding thinset is about 1/8", thinset to set the tile is about 1/8", and typical tile is maybe 1/4" +/- thick. Comments (24)Thank you again for your replies! The Kerdi over a Mud Base thread is great!! I have looked at the work of both contractors. The shower base and the grout lines done by the contractor who uses the Kerdi tray were excellent!! The only complaint I have is that he had very small tiles at the end of every other row. I think it could have been planned better. The tile work and grout lines done by the contractor who did not use the Schluter base were also good. The problem I have with his work is that the shower base was sloped toward the drain, but within inches of the drain, the slope increased dramatically. It looked like a hole, rather than the gradual slope of the Kerdi tray. In another install by this contractor, there was a noticeable bulge at the bottom of an outside corner. the other tile work looked great. This contractor is about $1000-$1500 less expensive than the other contractor. Can I mention my concerns to him and see what he says to address them? The following are shower floor dimensions excluding the curb: One shower will be roughly 36"x36". The other shower will be a Neo-angle about 34"x48". However, the 24" door will be on the angle with one side being about 19" and the other side being about 33". Can they or should they use the Kerdi tray as per Mongot's reply? Am I better off with a properly constructed mud base? I hope you can follow my explanation. Thanks again!!...See Moresaving mongo's 'kerdi shower' thread
Comments (6)Weedy, You're the best. Thanks so much for doing that. I'm just about up to my elbows in Titebond (literally, I've used a little over 1.5 gallons today) so it would have been a while before I could have devoted time to savethe thread. If at all possible, sometime next month I'd like to go through the thread and tweak it a bit. Sort of add the details that we've covered since that were not included in the original text. I'll be in touch a few weeks down the road to ask you what I need to access the thread so I can edit it. Best, Mongo...See Morepharaoh
