Charter, Windows 7 and email

Has anyone successfully set up Thunderbird with Charter? I have tried a few times but still can not send email. TIA

zep, thanks. I tried and it still doesn't work. I did notice that the thread was from 96, maybe that is why it will not work.

eandhl, I have Charter for a ISP. I don't like their email either. Neither the old or the new version. It is slow and too hard to see. As far as I can tell you can't adjust font size yet. I've been messing with this for the past couple of weeks and this is what I found out. I can't remember exactly how I accomplished this, but look around and see if you can stumble onto the answers. Or post back if you don't find it and I will try to again. The default seems to be to not keep sent messages in the sent folder. You can change that by clicking on the Preferences tab near the top on the blue line. then place a check mark in the box that says Save Outgoing Messages. Works for me, anyway. I don't know why you are getting an error message. when your messages disappeared from charter email, did they show up in live mail? That is the way it is set up by charter. Please excuse my lack of the correct terminology. Your email will show in charter email as long as live mail is not open, (or Outlook express, etc) When I open OE, all the emails sweep out of charter and into OE. A problem if you are traveling, and someone else is at home. The traveler can't see the emails if the person at home opens the receiving account i.e. OE. That's why live mail or gmail is nice. you can access anywhere. On my win7 laptop, I use a Gmail account, with the Charter set to forward into it. I don't remember exactly how I did that, but it must have been easy. Maybe Zep's link would show how to do it. Hope this makes a little bit of sense. Post back with any questions. Janette

I am using Firefox. So far today things seem to be running ok. The pictures were not a camera photos but images of something found on a website by my friend. Usually she or I will find a cute idea to craft and will send a picture of it. No problem in the years or days past everything always opens. Even when my friend had sent me a link to a site all I got was that blank page. Maybe firefox caught up with the new Adobe reader. Iris I don't get anything like this in my e-mails. The images just always open. On my list is to buy a pictorial Windows 7 book. I could really use it. I thought I may do ok with this new widows but there are some things that is different or sofware like my music software that will not work as it was outdated and no longer being made. Still have to work this issue out.

Thanks grandms for your reply. My accounts also show on the left and that's the problem. Sounds strange, but under OE there was one "Inbox", one "Sent", one "Draft" etc, etc. and all I had to do was click the "Inbox" and see all my messages. Now there are (in my case) 2 "Inboxes", 2 "Sents" etc and it's driving me crazy. To add to all this, I used to get messages that come in with a dark font and once read it would lighten, so you could tell at a glance what's read, what's not. NOW I have one account's Inbox that stays dark even though I KNOW I've read it. Sorry for the rant, but I just hate this. Grrrrr. BarbB

Be prepared to be laughed at and embarrassed if you choose to ask that question! Of course you need software to open Word documents on a Mac. Keep in mind, Windows will NOT let you open a Word file without software either! You have to buy Word or Office for Windows, or Word or Office for Mac. Another option is OpenOffice, also available for Windows and Mac. Seems to me it would be far better to save documents in .RTF anyway, it's far more universal. But don't blame the machine because the operator doesn't know how to use it. Apple has certain advantages, and Windows has certain advantages. Personally I can't justify paying 3 times the price for an Apple. And I don't know if there's the little gadget programs available that use constantly.

This is a copy of the message I get if I try to send a message in Thunderbird.
Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server smtp.charter.net. It does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Uncheck 'Use name and password' for that server or contact your service provider.

did you set it up as POP?
are these the settings you used?
pop3: mail.charter.net
smtp: smtp.charter.net (port 25)
no authentication

ok on another post I saw that someone suggested using mail.charter.net for both
in the link I provided from charter it shows using something different have you tried those methods?

Honestly at this point I can't remember everything I tried but I started on Charter Web site directions first. Then came here and still nothing has worked. I did get really upset doing this because all of the emails from Charter copied through the date of installing TB. I eventually thought, okay delete & empty everything and start from scratch. So I did. When it still wasn't working I went back to Charter mail and everything was GONE! It never occurred to me that would happen. Now I am wondering if I should uninstall TB and reinstall it. Maybe the install missed something?
