Message from Security Center

This morning while other person was using the PC a warning started flashing from Microsoft Security Center about an infection on the hard drive and files. (Sorry I didn't write down the exact message).

I clicked on what it said to do to clean the files, but nothing happened. I tried more then once to get it to run, to no avail. I then got the message that my browser (Firefox) didn't support MS Security center. Closed that went on IE and brought up the security center. Tried again and same results. Immediately closed down, rebooted and ran my Trend Micro full scan which turned up nothing.

Checked all the logs and two attempts to get into the computer were blocked as well as one spyware attempt.

So far the PC seems to be running fine. Is there something else I should check?

Using Windows XPSP2, AMD 2800 500 GB hard drive.

First of all I suppose you should make sure it was a valid message from MS and not some Phishing popup

You should try doing a google search from what you remember of the warning and also, download, install, update then run Malwarebytes. Which does an excellent job or finding and destroying any spyware etc

We were originally going to have 12" deep upper & base cabinets on the outside pantry wall b/w the FR & Kitchen for our Message Center. But, when several measuring errors by our KD reduced the doorway b/w the rooms from 5.5' to 4', there was no way the cabinets would fit. So, we now have a "Message Center Niche" recessed into the same outside pantry wall. The niche is only about 7" deep and was sized to fit the phone. It actually could have been an inch or so shallower, but since the studs for the wall gave us 7", we went with it. To us, the most critical elements were: Calendar to keep track of sports practices & games, school events, family happenings, project due dates, meetings, etc. [In this picture we had just put the calendar up & had not yet filled it in.] Land line phone & answering machine in a central location...in our case b/w the FR & Kitchen, which also put it central to the Garage entrance & Foyer/front door. This location is not only for answering the phone, but also so we can see if there are messages when we come into the house. During the remodel, the phone & answering machine were relocated to the Office/Library and we often forgot to check for messages. Keys since the Niche is across from the Garage entrance & a pretty straight shot from the Foyer/front door. We need a visible & easily accessible place! [Will be hung from hooks below the calendar frame.] Message pads (sticky notes) & pens/pencils for taking messages/leaving messages. [Yellow sticky note pads are in the pocket at the bottom of the calendar frame.] Charging station for my phone since I will forget it if it's not w/the keys (unplugged when not in use BlueKitObsessed!) [DH's phone & DH/DS/DD's iPods are charged elsewhere since they don't have a problem w/remembering them...and also unplugged when not in use!] What wasn't a priority since we no longer had the cabinets: Magnetic board b/c over the years I've found the best places to leave a message that I want to be sure my DH or kids see are: bathroom mirror if it's for the next morning or TV in the kitchen (DH) or computer screen (kids) if it's for after school/work. B/c of these locations, we use sticky notes. Our garage door is metal so we do keep two "school bus" clip magnets for the various forms that come home from school. Each child has his/her magnet. HTH!

I don't have mine hung up yet, but I just finished making my own message board. I used a piece of foam insulation board that we had leftover from construction. I then covered it in quilt batting, using spray adhesive to join them. Then I covered it in a fabric I found, again using the spray adhesive. I took my glue gun and used that to attach the edges of the fabric to the back of the board, wrapping and pulling it as neatly as I could. Using my glue gun again, I applied two different colors of ribbons , crossing them in x patterns across the board. Each place where the ribbons crossed each other, I glued a decorative button on. Push pins easily go into the foam, or I can just tuck notes under the ribbons. The entire project only took just over an hour and I spent a little over $15 for the fabric and ribbons. I already had the foam (which is fairly inexpensive at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) quilt batting, buttons and glue. I wanted a large board to hold all the school papers, calendar, and such, so we made it 40 inches by 68 inches. However, the foam is easily cut to any size you want. I also gave this type of thing a lot of thought when we remodeled last year. I ended up putting a desk and cabinets in a nook in my mudroom, because I tend to accumulate clutter, which I didn't want in the kitchen. I wonder if instead of a cabinet, you should do all drawers - you can put the kids' papers in drawers more easily than a cabinet. The upper cabinet is a good idea for baskets of pencils and extra office supplies. Maybe you could get a cd player that mounts under the cabinet so it doesn't take up countertop space? Here's a picture of my mudroom desk - sort of the same concept.

In our new kitchen we had planned to carry the cork tile flooring right on up the wall behind the kitchen door, framing it to be the same size as the door so that it would be hidden when the door was open -- then we planned to pin notes and reminders and photos to that tiled cork board. But when push came to shove, we had enough tile to cover the entire wall, I was away in the office, and our contractor friend persuaded my husband to just finish the wall entirely in tile, which looked great. It probably is best this way, but every now and then I wonder what it would have been like to have a cork board there for a sort of real-life collage, that could be hidden when the door was ajar. It still would be possible to suspend a cork board from the molding on that wall, like a picture rail, and pin things on it. But no rush. Lynn

it sounds like you have an infection of one of the variations of the antivirusxp type, they are not true MS security center warnings they mimic them to get you to click on them.
You need to get and run malwarebytes right away, you may need to go to one of the support forums if this is what it is to finish the cleaning, please do this
please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

this is a free program follow the directions and post your log so we can see exactly what you have and what more should be done. If you are unable to connect to that site let me know this infection type blocks many security sites and programs from running.

I sure do feel irritated with myself as I have read about this many times and then fell for it!

That being said, I went to the web site above and got the following message from Trend Micro.

This Web page has been identified as Dangerous.

What you can do:
> For your own safety, please close this web browser window now and never return to this website.
> If you still want to see this blocked page:
1. Launch Trend Micro Internet Security console.
2. Click Internet & Email Controls.
3. Click the Settings... link under Protection Against Web Threats.
4. Click the Approved websites link in the next window that opens.
5. Copy and paste the address of the blocked website into the list.
This message came up using both Firefox and IE7. Having all ready done one thing which may or may not have caused me problems, should I do as the above says? I'm sure you can understand my reluctance.

Think I would run my Virus program with its highest complete check. Check for updates first. If it has a boot mode scan, choose that one.

Once I typed Malwarebytes in Google it brought up the correct site without the warning I posted earlier.

mikie, I did run my Virus program with its highest complete check and at that time, showed nothing.

sorry I am in the process of packing up my house for a move and did not get back to you quicker, it looks like malwarebytes got it and removed it so I think you are ok, have you seen any more pop ups at all and how is the pc running now
I would also go to this online scan and run that just to make sure

just to let you know the majorgeeks site is a safe site many of the security programs use majorgeeks to host their downloads, not sure why that happened to you.

ravencajun - thanks for the reply. No, no more pop ups.

I'm not sure why I got that message unless it was due to the malware. When I typed in Malware in Google it brought up the site with no problem or warning.

Thanks for you help, really appreciate it.

Hope your move goes well. I spent 20 years in the military and I know what a pain that can be.
