Message center - chalk ink?

Bunny

I'm working on making a message center (board) for my kitchen. My old one, which isn't much to look at but is functionally awesome, is a framed board, 1/2 corkboard and 1/2 whiteboard. I use the whiteboard to keep my life from derailing: a few different colors, easy erase, fairly precise writing. The problem is whiteboards look like they belong in office cubicles.

I've been trying out chalkboard paint and it works great. It looks good in my kitchen. The problem is writing with chalk. It looks fine for big menu boards, but not so great for little details.

I'm wondering about chalk ink pens. They are really expensive and I think probably intended more for artists. You need to erase with water.

So, those of you with a chalkboard message center, what do you write with? Plain old chalk? Chalk ink pens? Do you wish you had a whiteboard for functionality, despite its looks?
