Transfer hard drive.

I have a dell optiplex 240 with a motherboard problem.

have bought a identical machine with a formated hard drive, can i just replace the harddrive to the new computer. will it just boot up with O.S. from the old hard drive,, thanks for any info.Den

Yes, if they are identical, it should boot up and be the same as it was before.
If there is a problem, it would be with windows activation.

That'll help. You can always burn stuff to CD or DVD and transfer it or simply network share everything. I just bought an A-Data 4gb flash off newegg for the $20 area. If you already have a camara that uses SD or some other type of flash memory you can use that too with a $20 usb card reader. Networking everything is the simple free way though.

Thank you so much for your reply. Some of these plugins I know for sure were installed as you said. The problem is I have so many I would like to use (I'm talking about several hundred) that to try and find them all to download again would take weeks. The ideal thing would be for me to network both computers and share the folders I want.I have Verizon Fios with a wireless router But there are two problems with that 1- I have no idea how to do that and 2- my desktop that has everything I want is Win XP 32 bit. the laptop is Vista 64 bit and I understand that it may not work. Do you have any knowledge about that? Thank y ou again Carol

I got seagate for the length of their warranty plus they are good drives. I got and like the seagate free agent PRO there is one that is not a pro version also. When I was looking I originally was going for a Western Digital but reading reviews online found many having heat issues and a friend bought one at the same time I got my seagate and had to send her WD back the next week for that reason so I was glad I chose seagate. Lacie also makes very good drives they are usually more expensive though. You should be seeing some great prices on externals real soon. Buy.com has had some great prices. Of course you should be aware of what type of format they come in, for me the fact the seagate came as NTFS was a plus.

If she already has the photos organized in albums/folders the way she likes them, she could just cut and paste from one drive to the other. If she's a little disorganized, she could set up a number of new folders on the external drive so that it would be easy in the future to better locate what she wanted. Alternatively, and especially if she isn't very organized, or wants to manage things in one system, she could download the free and powerful photo organizing and editing software from Google called Picasa.
