Shaker vs. Slab Door Style
Comments (25)I prefer slab for the same reason. It's easier to clean. I was raised by a mom who was always modern/contemporary. She could immediately point to ANY piece of furniture and tell you how much time would be wasted on dusting/cleaning. Shaker would be as far as it goes and never, ever white in the kitchen lol. I lean toward modern/contemporary. I think that has a lot to do with preferring slab cabinets. However, as an artist and someone tuned into aesthetics with literally EVERYTHING, I think it also depends on the amount of cabinets and whether they will be in an open vs enclosed space. The more ornate, the bigger the space should be I would think. And for a super clean look not only slab fronts but drawers instead of cabinets for which I'm inclined also. Just be sure to have longer, more visible but varied hardware or suffer a sea of white or almond or wood. I'm seeing more kitchens with mostley drawers and am soooo happy. The convenience of pulling out a 4 ft deep drawer to see ALL of my pots and pans at once. Stand back and scan your home as you walk into or face your kitchen and picture what color, and what pattern. I know what I'd do with a big kitchen. I'd split the difference. I'd do a different color and slab front bottoms with lots of drawers and have shaker uppers. Or if I had a flush wall of cabinets that houses a fridge and ovens. If there are a lot of uppers, make sure some have patterned glass to break it up or just open shelves (dusting always)....See MoreShaker Cabinets & other interior doors in kitchen
Comments (4)we installed white shaker cabs in the kitchen reno. I replaced the pantry door with a similar shaker style glass door but didn't replace the door to the mudroom. if we did that, we'd have to replace all the doors in the house (6 panel), and our overall house isn't craftsman or shaker style, so the doors would have looked a little out of place outside of the kitchen....See MoreChanging hinges on interior MDF doors: ball bearing or not? where buy?
Comments (7)For painted residential doors TruStile MDF doors are top quality in every respect and are superior in many ways to natural pine and fir doors. As for cost, it can be difficult to persuade a homeowner to pay a premium for these doors but it is a good investment. As for screw holding, the hinge stile is reinforced with a hardwood strip that is stronger than a softwood door stile: Ball bearing hinges are used for commercial duty in dormitories, hospitals, etc. For residential doors 3 pairs of butt hinges are adequate unless you are unusually sensitive to squeaks and not willing to maintain the hinges. Be careful about ORB finishes. There are a half dozen ways to create this faux finish from paint to chemical treatment of brass so they often don't match other ORB finishes. Its a finish I have carefully avoided. You should buy them from the same company that makes the door knobs and require that they be returnable if they don't match....See MoreReviews of Door to Door Company Atlanta or other shaker interior doors
Comments (7)My neighbor near my last house bought all of his interior doors at Menards against his builders wishes. How do I know that? We had the same builder. A few years later most of the doors were coming off the hinges. That was about 2005. Maybe they have improved but I would not take the chance....See Moreolivesmom
