cannot get printer to print to networked computer

hello all,

Network:new win7 desktop,old generic xp DT, dell notebook a

belkin G wireless router, motorola dsl modem,dell notebook xp connected wireless. I cannot get an hp psc 1610 printer (altho shared) to print for the other members of the network. Neither can I connect to shared files on the xp desktop also shared. I am sure this caused by a mistake made when setting up the network (computer names, etc). Can I repair this or would it be best to set network up again? Any suggestions would be appreciated. BTW it works fine with the generic xp and dell xp as far as the internet connection is concerned. I'd set up the network again.

Neither can I connect to shared files on the xp desktop also shared

Lets see if you can get the above working, see link for possible help on this

"As soon as Windows 7 is installed, it creates a default HomeGroup. If it detects an existing HomeGroup, you will be given the opportunity to join, but you will need the password. For home and small business users, HomeGroup is an excellent tool, but there is a problem.

HomeGroup only works when all other machines on the network have Windows 7 installed, which in the short term, may not be the case. There will be many situations where the network has XP or Vista machines as part of the network, in addition to Windows 7. So, how is it possible to get them all to work together?"

I thought problem was solved as all of a sudden it started printing while I in another room?? Didn't use for a few days now when I try to print - just blank pages are printing. Printer is Dell V515w. When I hit print on the computer it indicates Dell V310 Series USB - which is highlighted. Under that Dell V310 - V510 Series.I hit print - then just blanks. I apologize again for my lack of knowledge. Thank you.

Well. if you can print from the desktop, at least you can transfer files to it with your thunb drive (as opposed to going to the library). When you try to print, use the drop-down menu in the print dialog box, and see if you have the printer listed. If so, select it from the list. If you select it, and the printer status is "idle", you should be ready to go. (This is assuming that you already have the proper driver installed on the laptop.) We just went through the same aggravation with our HP J6480. In our setup, we have a home network. The printer is connected to the router (not the adjacent desktop). Basically, if you go to Start / My Network Places (In WinXP), you can create a Workgroup. Then you do the same on the other computers, using the same name, and opting for "file and printer sharing". If the printer is connected to the desktop directly, make sure the computer is on, and that file and print sharing is turned on. Then go to Control Panel / Printers, and look for that printer. Right click on it, then "set as default". Then see if you can print. Last, but not least, try unplugging the printer and waiting a minute. Plug back in, turn it on, and you might be able to print. Thanks zep & fruitjar! Yes, the printing window would pop up and the hour glass would stay on until the print job finished. I could only print one job at a time and sit and do nothing until the printing stopped. I did download SP3 [what a horror that was] a couple of months ago and had to get MS support to uninstall it all. That might have started the problem. Ofcourse, I always have non-essential programs running at the same time! I went to the HP site and got online support. It took a while to figure it out but it was resolved by going to Control Panel, Printers, R Click the printer icon, properties, advanced tab and changing selection from "print directly to printer" to "Spool print documents so program finishes faster". Yayyyy! I can again walk & chew gum at the same time! I can send more than one print job and keep on working. I NEVER changed that setting but I'm wondering if SP3 did. It is the root of all evil. Thanks~ I never occurred to me to go to the darn HP site.

But..I keep reading the fact that the ink jet ink just won't last. I am printing my own pictures, too..and hoping for the best, but I just bought a Picture It program and it says the pictures will last anywhere from two months (two months!!!!!!!) to forty years...lol. Well, the forty years would probably take care of me and mine (the grandkids might like them longer than that though) but I have yet to see one that lasted only two months. I did a little experimenting and printed one off and pinned it up on my bulletin board in the light and air....it lasted about four months that way until it was a "ghost" picture. I have one printed on plain ol paper, but under glass on my desk here, and it has faded some, but is still nice. The book for the Picture It said that the ink will start "shifting" at about the two month point. I LOVE my digital pictures and you can print so many different sizes and do so much "adjusting" on them. But...I'm afraid ten years down the road, all of my work will be for naught. This is one of my favorite pictures and I treasure it....time will tell, I guess I wrote, "Christmas is Magic" underneath it. The book I was reading said to use the very best photo paper, and, of course, I do that, but I'm still a little worried about this. I've been doing this for about two years and keep going back and checking the pictures. I can't see that they are deteriorating as yet...

Win. 7 homegroup, printer sharing.

scroll down to my post, in it I link to a reply by jimbo45 on another forum, that should work. That is how I got mine working and it does in fact work that way for 7 and vista also from what I read

You Must have the same work group names and printer names on all of the computers and the main computer must be on for the sharing to work.

Thanks Zep and Raven.
I have been trying to overcome the problen without redoing the home network. I can't seem to get the correct
computer names and the printer names in the network. I think that I will bite the bullet and redo the home network. I appreciate all your help and suggested reading links. I will keep them safe for future reference.
Hope that neither of you were in the severe storms of last week. BTW is there any particular things I need to do as I setup the home network again?

Tell you what might help is Google "Setting up home network xp and windows 7" Something like that fool around with the key words entered into Google and you will find a bunch of links and information to get you going. And helpers will be standing by here..
