Dollybaby Ready for Christmas & Gr'pa's Time Piece

Blizzard here in IA...so got a bunch done today for the holidays! Certainly was singing, Oh, the weather outside is frightful, the snow is so delightful... as I kept my nose indoors most of the day!

Dollbaby is now all decked out for Christmas. This outfit is from my cedar chest...my Mom & G'ma both had "cedar chests"...I think that's something from the past now-a-days...but, anyway, this outfit has been in it for many yrs! So, I thought, might as well put it to good use! Here's a fullview of Dollbaby: (oh, yeah, my Mom sewed this)

The red & white satin & fur was a tap-dancing outfit I wore when I performed at 7 yrs old on a local tv station for Father's Day! Something, uh! So I just kind of wrapped Babydoll in it! Here's a little closer view:

And here's a close-up of a candle doily (a gift) that I put around her wrist to show off the painted "Star Santa" (a gift 10 yrs ago or so):

The Nativity set is a gift (also long ago) from my parents, who were Winter Texans...mimics the Precious Moments type of decor...I have always loved it so! Here's a close-up of a few pcs:

This is me in June, 1954...quite a special occassion to be on tv! I think some other kids where I took tap dance lessons performed that day, too. You can see in this pic how the outfit is really supposed to fit!

I posted a thread on "buffet" decor...but wanted to show you a close-up vignette of DH's Gr'pa's time piece...the old wind-up clock, & added resin bird (a gift from a GJer friend), scroll sawed MChristmas, & a little wood birdhouse (gift from DD)...I'm learning so much on this forum & moving things from one area to another in my house!

Dollbaby looks terrific in her red/white outfit. Cute little star santa ornament too. Love the little nativity, yes it sure does resemble Precious Moments. Love the old clock, had an Uncle who collected clocks--had them all over the house and insisted on keeping them wound. What a racket when they all chimed the hour! LOL Your pictures all look so nice like they should be in a magazine. You were/are certainly a cutie. How fun that you have that photo of when you got to be a television "celebrity". TFS

Thanks, luvs...I'm online yet tonight. My parents didn't have alot of money...3 kids shared 1 BR ...but they did special things for us...my Mom sewed all our clothes back in those days. Have a good night, luvs. Jeanne S.

Oh Deb, I'm sorry Jessica isn't home, that must put a damper on your holiday. You & David need to start a new holiday tradition so you'll have something to look forward to (a little weekend getaway? B&B? Fancy dinner on Christmas Eve?). Hope your mother is doing well & enjoying the season. My shopping is DONE! With DD in middle school this year I wasn't going to purchase teacher gifts -- she has eight teachers!-- but the social studies teacher organized a field trip taking all the sixth graders to see the Statue of Liberty. Bless the man, they spent ten hours on a bus! Eight sixty person busses actually, 480 kids and parents participated. He's getting a Borders gift card. Yes, he deserves adult beverages but the kiddo can't take that to school. Christmas dinner is still in the planning stages, DH is vacillating between turkey and ham. So once a decision is made, I need to grocery shop. Baking I enjoy, that's not a chore at all. We tried a new pecan pie recipe from Southern Living at Thanksgiving and it just wasn't right, so the old faithful pecan pie will appear at Christmas. Happy holidays! Cecily

Hi Ima, I don't grow Epicias, but know someone who does. Are yours under the lights as well? I ask, 'cause they guy I know who grows them does so under lights & his blooms well & often. He grows some Sinningias too under those same lights & they usually also bloom beautifully for him. PS. Judithva, Thanks, I'm glad you like the plates. I can't seem to find them any where so I will only have a set of four. If you let me know when your coming, I will leave milk and cookies for you!LOL I will work on the birdcage and see if I can do more with it. I think I have a metal one somewhere in the shop so maybe next year I'll dig it out too. Luvs, I think a red cardinal would look good with the dishes. I went and looked at Karens last years pictures. Maybe if I'd go help her with her decorations she would give me her cardinal. Do you remember hers? If not go take a look, it's neat. Syble, thanks, I received the S & P shakers for a gift. They are bicentennial, so quite old but still beautiful. Our home is tan and white so any color works. Your pink is beautiful so enjoy it. Gldnfan, thanks for your comments. Is this it? OXFORD FRUITCAKE This has been my favorite fruitcake since I first tasted it when I was in my teens. The recipe is adapted from one given to me by Daphne Giles, the British sister-in-law of my late childhood friend, Noel Giles. Daphne comes from Newbury, near Oxford, and prepared this every year for Noel’s Christmas day birthday. Makes 50 2-inch squares Batter 8 ounces dark raisins 8 ounces golden raisins 8 ounces currants 8 ounces dates, pitted, cut into 1/4-inch dice 8 ounces dried figs, stemmed, cut into 1/4-inch dice 8 ounces mixed candied fruit 4 ounces candied cherries 4 ounces candied pineapple, cut into 1/4-inch dice 4 ounces walnut halves 4 ounces pecan halves 4 ounces whole almonds 1/2 cup plus dark rum or brandy, plus more for sprinkling 2 1/4 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter 1 cup dark brown sugar 4 large eggs Topping 1 pound almond paste 4 cups (1 1-pound box) confectioners’ sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1 12-x-18-inch half sheet pan 1. In a large bowl, combine fruits and nuts and toss with rum or brandy. (The mixture may be left covered several days at this point.) 2. When you’re ready to bake the cake set a rack at the middle level of the oven and preheat to 300 degrees. 3. Sift flour with other dry ingredients and set aside. Beat butter until light then beat in brown sugar. Continue beating until lighter. Beat in a third of the flour mixture, 2 eggs, and continue alternating until all is combined, ending with flour mixture. Pour batter over fruit and nuts and fold thoroughly together. 4. Press batter into the prepared pan. Place a piece of parchment or foil over the batter and press it so it adheres well. Bake until firm and no longer wet, about 1 hour, being careful not to overbake. 5. Cool the fruitcake in the pan. Moisten cheesecloth with 1/2 of the remaining rum. Sprinkle cake with remaining rum and wrap it in rum-moistened cheesecloth. Wrap in plastic and foil and age the fruitcake several weeks, if you wish. (Please note: Although the cake should keep fine at room temperature, especially since it has been soaked with alcohol, I prefer to age it in the refrigerator.) 6. For topping, combine almond paste, sugar and 1/3 cup corn syrup in a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse repeatedly about 10 or 12 times to form a dough. Remove from work bowl and knead until smooth. Double wrap in plastic and store until needed at room temperature. 7. To cover the fruitcake with the marzipan, bring the remaining 2/3 cup corn syrup to a boil in a small saucepan. Brush half the hot corn syrup on the fruitcake. On a surface dusted with confectioners’ sugar, roll half the marzipan to the size of the fruitcake. Lift and place marzipan on fruitcake, pressing to adhere. Invert fruitcake to a clean surface and repeat with remaining corn syrup and marzipan. Trim edges and cut fruitcake into 2-inch squares. Well I don't know who's cuter in that outfit...you or Dollbaby! What a Christmas load of memories wrapped up in red satin. Your stories are as cozy and heartwarming as your home is.
Dollbaby looks VERY happy in her Christmas dress, playing with her Nativity.
The old wind-up clock sure made a special vignette, and more memories ticking by.

Dollbaby looks just adorable in her little Red with fur trim outfit. I agree with Karen, it's hard to decide on who looks cuter wearing it. That picture of you is just priceless.
It's in amazing condition after so many years...but then, that's the reward of keeping it in your cedar chest. My DGM in Ohio, kept EVERYTHING in hers..We used to joke that 'All' that she loved was kept in there and we'd better be careful she didn't put us in there too!
The little Nativity may not be Precious Moments, but is so 'Precious' looking!
I love how you created the Vignette with the old clock using the birdhouse and little bird. Thanks for the close up on it.
It's good that you can stay home with all that snow you're getting. Stay warm and stay safe.

Jeanne, Dollbaby looks so proud to be wearing your outfit. I don't know who looks cuter. The Nativity is charming and the Santa bracelet is really cute. The vignette with the clock is wonderful, you really know how to put things together. Sorry about the blizzard. We are getting ice today. It is supposed to warm up this afternoon. But that doesn't mean it will up here in the mountains. Oh well.

I agree with what everyone has said. Your pictures are wonderful as well as the story behind them. Thank you for sharing.

Here in Ohio, it was raining this morning but it turned to snow. We are supposed to get about three inches. It looks beautiful sticking to all the trees. When it finally stops snowing, I hope my snow blower will start.

That' a great story around the outfit. If it is a little picture, you should frame it and put it next to Dollbaby whenever she's dressed in the outfit.

OA...that's a great idea about a framed pic by DBaby...this one is too big but I do have a snapshot my Mom must have taken for this special day. And this pic is one I remember seeing over the yrs as I was growing up...t.v. studio must have taken it. That outfit will be going bk in cedar chest after Christmas.

jane...my DGM always let me "snope" in her cedar chest when I spent an overnighter quite frequently...she was an inspiration! So glad to hear about your DGM's cedar chest!

Jeanne, love the little red dress. So cute. And what a story about it. Yes, we had quite a snow storm Saturday, great time to stay in and decorate. I love the old clock, and the way you used it is so natural.

Awwwwwww, that's so sweet, you and doll baby both. The nativity has that darling child like figures which work just right for doll baby. I have my mother's cedar chest too. It's was part of a "waterfall" bedroom suite from the 30's. I have some of my baby clothes in there and some of DS dance costumes too. He was a dancer for for the first 28 years and I can't part with some of the costumes which I hand made, I also keep a lot of crochet my mother did in there. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Love your woodland vignette, the old clock is perfect, like you, I'm learning to use things in different ways too.

Dollbaby looks great in your dance costume. I think I have a pic of myself (black & white too) in one of my dance costumes from about 7 years old too. I KNOW I don't have the costume anymore, but will have to think where that pic is now!

Great that you still have the costume from then.

Baby doll looked like the costume was made for her! You looked very cute in it also. Thought I would rake up leaves this morning & come in & make choc. covered cherries when mom called & bro. needed help,that was about 9:30 this morning. Got home in time for bowl of soup tonight as our 80+ weather has ended & was getting foggy & cold. But their house is looking good & den is restored to it's normal look after bro. painted & replaced border, rehung drapes & had to redo part of hardware. So they are almost ready for xmas & my house is a mess! That's OK because my dad loves looking at the tree & eating the goodies I make. Hope he doesn't turn LR into race track for his wheelchair! He's 94 & loves Christmas this year!Jan

Jan, what a sweetheart you are to change your plans to go help at your Mom's. Bet she is happy to have a nice clean fresh room for the holidays. Sounds like your Dad is a "go-getter".
