what size light fixture over bathroom vanity?

Hi, we are redoing our bathroom, adding a corner tub so we scaled down from a double vanity to a single. Vanity is 48 inches, the granite top is 49 inches. I have a mirror that is 32 x 38, i think it will look better hung longways, so,.. is a 3 light fixture (24.5 in length) okay?

It'll be fine. Leaves a foot on each end, so it will look nice and uncluttered.

Most multi-light bars over the mirror actually put out too much light, IMO. I have a three light over a 36, and use 20 watt bulbs in it. Anything more is too much.

The trend today is side lighting, which really is more flattering-- hides the crows feet and wrinkles until you enter the real lit-from-above world, at which time you look like you again. But it would be very tight given the size of your mirror.

Thank you oruboris, that helps. I would have preferred sconces on the side, but we have to use, or cover, the electrical box above the mirror that was already there. we took down a huge frameless mirror that had a 5 light fixture. really ugly light fixture and way too bright, even using 40 watt bulbs. after i get the room painted today i will hold the mirror up over the vanity, maybe it is too large. but i got a deal at Kirklands! i can always return it and find a smaller mirror.

I found something that works! I have a double vanity with two surface mounted medicine cabinets 24 inches wide with a 5 inch depth from the wall and for the life of me I couldn't find a suitable light to extend OVER and beyond the cabinet frame. I found a track light with three bulbs that I think will work but I can mount them on the wall above each cabinet rather than on the ceiling. I ordered on line from Lowe's: "3LT BRUSHED NICKEL FINISH FROSTED GLASS Item 20161 Model EC1431BN.

Thanks all. Annz.. the room is roughly 10 x 10, not counting the fairly large shower. and there is a skylight, so the room looks pretty big even with the new corner tub ( it did not have a tub before only the long vanity and a dressing table). I am painting the room today, Valspar Soul Chocolate, white trim, light khaki-ish color ceiling. Fixtures are white, tile is beigey. Gee, it looks better than it sounds. Patricia./.. thanks, I kept thinking '2/3' measurements formula, but i was guessing. it just seemed a 4 light fixture was too big, but there are 3-light fixtures that are not as long as the one i bought. I did see one that was 19 1/2 inches long that i liked. So, I will get the room painted today and hold the mirror and fixture up there. i think the mirror looks better horizontal, that would be the 38" length. Thanks again

I am purchasing my bathroom vanity lights this week. For my boy's bathroom, they have 2 vanities back to back from one another. The vanity is 54 inches long. The light fixture I purchased is a 4 light bar, measuring 28 inches across. Is this a good size for that space? In comparison to what we ave in our current home, a 36" vanity with a 24" light fixture. I know it will be enough light just don't want it to look out of proportion. The mirror will extend completely over the vanity and the light will go right above the mirror. I think anything bigger will be overwhelming and too much light.

A double light over each sink should be sufficient with a window and assuming the shower is directly across from the vanity and that is the extent of the room. Other options are three single sconces mounted on the mirror and an over head light to give more light to the shower. I have a four-light over a 60" vanity in a 5x11 windowless room. The vanity area is well-lit. The shower at the end of the room is a little more shadowed but not enough to make showering and cleaning an issue.
