Insects are known to have an extremely keen sense of smell, and use it to locate plants they want to eat. Many insects also specialize on individual plant species, or families, like a Monarch Butterfly to a milkweed. So all they have to do is sniff out one particular type of scent to target their food source. Your cucumbers will be located, resistance is futile.

This is slightly different from what you are looking at, but is some ways appropriate. Using Google Earth you should be able to locate the position of the tree you planted with or with out GPS. Find the general area where the tree was planted and zoom into the area and find the nearly exact the location where you planted the tree. You can increase the accuracy of the position by measuring from two hard object that can be seen in Google Earth to the tree, then transfer those measurements to the Google Earth using the measuring function in Google earth. You can measure things in Google earth to the nearest foot.. Once you locate the trees you planted in Google Earth place a Placemark at the site of each tree. In the Placemark description you can place all of the statistics about the tree. While I have never seen, you can back up all of this information, and transfer it to other computers with Google Earth. These two files contain that information myplaces.backup.kml and myplaces.kml Copy them to the folder you want to use as a back up or copy them in the same Google directory on the other computer. If you install Google Earth you will be over writing the ones created on installation. In Window 8.1 they are located in C:\Users\account \AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth Account is the name of the user account. If you have an earlier version of Windows they are in the Application data. Or you can search for them use the above file name. I transferred the information to my Windows 8.1 computer from and Windows XP computer using this technique. I have used this exact procedure to locate ancestors graves to archive the location. You have quite an imagination, chas. Maybe 15 years ago, I was on a trip to a Southern city I'd never been to before. I flew in the night before and found my hotel with directions from the car rental company. I got up in the morning needing to drive about 10 miles to an appointment. I asked the woman at the hotel's front desk how to get to 3600 XYZ Street, she gave me directions. As I got off the freeway, I realized something was wrong, I was in a seedy neighborhood (abandoned buildings, those not abandoned had bars over doors and windows) although I WAS in the 3600 block of XYZ street. I cautiously found a payphone (yeah, that long ago), made a call, and was informed that I must have gone to 3600 EAST XYZ Street instead of 3600 West XYZ Street. I sheepishly arrived 20 minutes late to my meeting. I'll refrain from describing my personal emotions that morning. As for your various silly scenarios, wrong destination details will always take you to the wrong place, whether you're using technology or asking for directions in a gas station. I've learned to get accurate information and a cross street, it helps. Devices don't break so suddenly as you would like to suggest. You should be happy using whatever method works for you. Personally, I won't own a car without a GPS system, and I have a portable one to use when I travel and rent cars. I've been using them for >10 years, daily and in far-flung places, and none of the things you mention have ever happened to me. A few silly routings, of course, that's part of the fun. Have I gotten lost or failed to arrive where desired? Never.

Dog's death leads to a push for quicker tracing of cellphones 5:00 PM, September 4, 2008 After her SUV, phone and dog were stolen at a cemetery last month, Hemet resident Mary Michael tried to get Verizon to track the phone in the vehicle carrying her beloved pet, Rebel. Verizon said it couldn't do so without a warrant. Rebel was found dead, prompting Michael to take aim at that regulation, The Times' David Kelly reports: A distraught Michael said Rebel would be alive today if Verizon had traced the cellphone she had left inside the car. "They could have saved Rebel's life," she said Tuesday during a news conference outside Riverside County Superior Court. "It's my phone. It has GPS capability. We should be able to use it." Michael, who is originally from London and lives in Hemet, has started a campaign to make such tracking easier. Many wireless companies now require warrants before tracing phones, but Michael argues that obtaining a warrant takes too long when a life hangs in the balance. Verizon spokesman Ken Muche said state and federal privacy laws make it impossible to trace a phone without a court order. He said criminals and stalkers had impersonated customers in the past to try to find cellphone users. "We work with law enforcement and will respond to requests from the court like subpoenas and warrants," Muche said. "We have a policy in place so our customer service people are not in a position of having to determine a person's identity." Had Verizon traced the phone, it could have pinpointed the location as close as 50 to 100 yards, he said. That was cold comfort to Michael. "If this had been done, Rebel would not have had to suffer, and we would not be going through the pain of losing her in this terrible way," she said. One - who ever leaves a dog or an unattended child in a running car is ASKING for trouble especially in Southern California. Two - If she had wanted to leave the dog in the A/C cooled car she should have locked the doors and taken her remote control key or second key with her. Three - Although the dog and this woman were traumatized and victimed and it is horrible that it ended in the dogs death, THIS WAS COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE had the owner used common sense. I frequent Southern California and there is NO SAFE place you must be on guard everywhere.
