Help! Can you track a lost iPhone?
Comments (16)Akpparently this won't help you, but this is my DD's recent email: "This is why technology is awesome: I lost my phone at a concert last night. As soon as I knew it was gone, I started calling it. Whoever had it was not answering. I set it to "lost phone mode" from a friend's phone, which sent a display message to my phone saying that it was lost and giving a contact number to reach me. This morning I used the Find My iPhone app, which pinned it to a house in Littleton, giving me an address and a map. After I filed a police report online, I called the Littleton police, who went to the house (which turned out to be a duplex, but Find My iPhone was pretty specific, pinning my phone's location to the northern unit in the building. I took a screen shot of map and texted it to the officer.). So the cops walked into the apartment and let the ladies living there know that they'd tracked a stolen phone to their house. There was some go-around, but after they were told that a stolen phone carried a grand larceny charge (which actually isn't true, the cop was bluffing), they managed to find the phone and give it to the officer. So I got my phone back and didn't have to drop $400 at the Verizon store"!...See MorePersonal Navigation Devices
Comments (34)I have an old Magellan (probably 10 years old) and have no reason to get a new one although I have thought about it. I asked a few trucker friends about the advantages of one the truckers use. I was surprised that they're only about $350-$400 and have more features that many wouldn't use, like routing according to vehicle height, but that could be advantageous to people with RVs. Yes, you'll occasionally get taken a, shall we say "non best" route but I don't find many problems. Trying to find a house in a new development can be problematic in this case but frankly I've had very few issues with this. For this reason I find the map updates and especially "free" map updates to be a great sales gimmick, but in reality, of very little value. What people don't seem to understand is first, there's not that many changes. Second and more importantly "lifetime" map updates are not YOUR lifetime, it's the lifetime of the UNIT! LOL So what this means is if you buy a unit today with "lifetime updates" (whether free or not), and they discontinue that model tomorrow, there go your "lifetime" updates! But a lot of people get sucked in by sales pitches. To me a GPS unit is good for about 3 years and then if you're a serious traveler who goes to a lot of various places, including new developments you should probably get a new one. Consumer units are relatively cheap and upgrading gives you newer features. For the average person, most any unit will serve you just fine for a long, long time. I find the navigation programs on smartphones to be laughable. I live in an established neighborhood. My house has been here for 40 years and from most anywhere within 30 miles or more it's usually no more than a few turns to get here yet 4 out of 5 people using smartphone apps will get lost. I can count on it. And of course they won't listen to me when I tell them to follow my simple directions ("DUH, I have GPS!!"). No it's not "GPS" it's it's a map app but I digress. Sometimes they are sent to the opposite side of town. I can usually count on people being late when they rely on their phone apps. Unless they're close friends, people who are coming for non-important reasons are told that I don't give the address anymore because people get lost and don't show up so if they want an address I'll give them a non-existent one that will get them to the corner and they contact me when they get there and I guide them the rest of the way. I won't wait for them. If it's late, I go to bed or if something else is going on, I leave to take care of errands or business. When they rely on something that takes too long, they're SOL. Again I digress! My last comment, other than getting a unit like many/most truckers use, I wouldn't spend too much on a GPS. I do like a larger screen, I think that's helpful. Keep in mind that GPS units are not much different than texting while driving. Your eyes are off the road, punching in info while driving is no different than texting and just as dangerous but you don't hear about it very much. That's a big frustration for me....See MoreGoogle searches help track sources of foodborne illness
Comments (15)Anglophilia, the Health Department isn’t advertising who they’ve inspected using Google to target their inspections, any more than they advertise the restaurants they inspect in the usual way. By your reasoning, the Google targeting is still better because using their usual methods and only finding a problem with 23% means that 77% have been unfairly maligned. In any case, I think you are ambitious in your claim that every restaurant is inspected. I have worked in kitchens that were never inspected, or only inspected every few years. (This didn’t mean we didn’t keep them spotless and used safe food handling practices, just because and also who could say that lightning wouldn’t strike?) This premise is also implied by the article, pointing out how few inspectors there are. And surely if every single place was inspected then the hit rate would be the same in both cases because the problem places the Google targeting is helping the inspectors to find, would have been inspected already, which clearly they weren’t. And you just have to watch a few episodes of Restaurant Impossible or Kitchen Nightmares to see that there is any number of places run by qualified chefs who admit they know about safe food handling practices, who just don’t bother and have truly filthy kitchens....See MoreAm I the last person to discover Kanopy?
Comments (25)3katz, I didn’t know the answer, so I looked up their help page. I believe one movie is one credit, regardless of length. Kanopy Kids and Courses don’t require any credit, i.e., unlimited. There are, in addition, “credit-free” offerings from time to time. That’s what I understood from this page, which has additional info. I’m glad we have such a great resource through the public library system. https://help.kanopy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001290193-How-play-credits-work...See Moremaddielee
