The first thing I would try is logging into the modem
and turning off ALL of the wireless security.
Then see if you can connect. If you can, the problem is not
your computer. Then progressively increase security until
you can no longer connect. Mite want to turn off your firewall
too since it is one of the layers of security on your LAN.

You will probably need a wired connection to log into your router.

are you sure you are entering the exact correct passphrase to connect to your wireless network? it has to be exactly correct.
when you try to connect to the wireless network are you seeing your networks name in the list of available networks?
what happens when you select that network name? it should ask for the passphrase, when you enter it what happens?

Give us some detailed info please.

We used the 'paid' business version of this network manager at work for a number of years.

I installed the free home use version (alternative to network magic) and it has been a godsend on complicated setup connections and for troubleshooting constant 'drop offs'.

I am still not able to get on despite spending 2 hours on the phone with my internet provider tech support last night. Talk about frustrating! They don't seem to have any idea what the problem could be - the tech said that since I have a secure wireless connection and a land based connection for the pc, the modem will have a built in router which means I don't need the external router connected. With or without the router I can't get on.
I turned off all the security (briefly) - nothing changed. I can see my wireless connection in my list of available options and it says I am connected to it.
But I can't get to a webpage.
Thankfully my bank has a computer anyone can sign in to to do online banking, my daughter has this pc which I can use a bit and I can check my mail at work.
The tech is coming over tomorrow - maybe I'll get some answers.
If he's stumped, I am wondering if there is a way to feed the landbased connection to my laptop - anybody have an idea on that?

You have one internet connection.
One combination modem/wifi/router ?

What is the make\model number of the modem ?

Let's start with clearing up some terminology to make sure we're all on the same page. Correct me if I'm wrong:

• Before the move you connected to the internet laptop via a wireless connection. For the moment we'll presume that the hardware of your laptop is still working.

• At your new house you have a combination modem/router provided by your ISP. There is a second (desktop?) computer in the house connected to the modem/router via a wired connection. That indicates that you are connected to the internet.

• You disabled the wireless security in the router by going into the router setup page. You are able to connect to the router but unable to browse the web.

• I'm assuming you're not trying to use your old router in conjunction with the new modem/router.

• Who is your ISP and what is is brand/model of the combination modem/router?

• Have you tried using a wired connection with your laptop?

It really helps us if you answer the questions that are asked they are important.
Again when you say you see your network in your list if you select that network to connect to does it ask for your wireless password and are you absolutely sure you are entering it correctly.

You can certainly use an ethernet cable to connect your laptop to the modem or router and have a wired connection which is something to try to see if you can get connected that way.

do you have a firewall on this computer? many times firewall settings have to be adjusted to allow the network.
What firewall is on?

Have you tried doing it using safe mode with networking?

I question this modem, it is supposed to be a modem with built in router that is also wireless network capable?
as asked please tell us what make and model and ISP.

I wamted to thank everyone for all the advice and helpful solutions...
A tech friend came over yesterday and we spent quite a few hours researching the problem. We found that the driver for my laptop had died and we were able to download a new one but could not get the laptop to accept it.
Today after work I splurged and bought a new one - voila, no more problems.
The one I was using I bought 3 Christmases ago for $300 - I think I got my money's worth out of it.
