Old toilet help

Help! We recently bought a 1902 home, and the bathroom had a really cool mint green bathtub. The toilet was crummy and the sink vanity was even worse. We tore them out and got a wall mount green sink and found a matching green toilet. The ONLY problem with the toilet is that no matter how much I clean it, it still smells weird. It didn't stink before I put it in, but now it does. Is there anything I can do to seal it up so it doesn't stink? I know it sounds weird, but I really need some help. It looks like there is a gap between the back (tank) part and the bowl-part. Would some sort of sealant help?

BTW, when we pulled the old toilet out, much of the floor around it was rotten.

**also, what type of flooring would look good with mint-green fixtures? We are going to re-tile the shower with small 1" square white tiles....

Check the holes around the rim of the toilet. Use a pipe cleaner dipped in a lime cleaner to clean them out. Also, put some lime cleaner in the tank and let it sit for about 12 hours. Not sure if this will solve it, but it sounds like the water passages inside the toilet are the problem. If this toilet was sitting somewhere for a long time in a wet place,maybe it started growing some mold but then dried out. Once it's back in service and the molds or grunge gets wet, well then it smells.

There is a gap between many tanks and the bowl----even my brand new Kohler has one. I don't think that is the problem.

Empty the bowl and using a sponge, and rubber gloves, to remove the water from the trap-way. If the ring is rough and uneven to the touch, it's a indication of calcium deposits. The acid will cause nasal discomfort so keep the area ventilated. Pour some muratic acid into the bottom of the bowl and using some brown Scotch-Brite, moistened with the acid, gently scrub the ring. The treatment may not cure the problem entirely, and I would caution against using a stronger acid, that you are not familiar with.

Thanks. Not quite ready for THAT project. :) But I did buy some nice new rubber reducing washers and a new brass/chrome ell (although it is really to be used for a drain), and everything turned out beautifully! No runs, no leaks, no errors.

If it ain't broke and you don't need the latest style I'd just put it back. The valves and flappers fail in all toilets over time, there's no reason to replace the whole thing to repair those problems. If you needed to go to a lower flow, or had one of the '90's toilets that never actually worked that would be a different story. All that said, I'm very impressed with the new Toto's we put in our house. Not very expensive, work perfectly, refill quickly and quietly.

Would you recommend a cemented PVC adapter like the ones above? Or something like this? Only concern is going right under the toilet (new Kohler Cimarron going in). https://www.supplyhouse.com/Fernco-3009-33-3-x-3-ProFlex-Coupling-Thinwall-PVC-to-Sched-40-PVC Also included a pic identifying the pipe, as well as the connection to the flange from underneath. Where would I be safe making a permanent, leak-free connection with that coupling? And klem1 - thank you, I was measuring out ways to do that, and turns out I would need to pull the flange awkwardly upward to clear the new floor... awkwardly angling the drain pipe (pulling more than I would like) and leaving the flange itself at an angle. So I think I'm going to have to replace the flange no matter what after all.
