Hold down the power button until the computer reboots (may take up to 10 seconds). As a last resort, unplug the computer for a few seconds.

Hit the MS button between the Ctrl (Control on some keyboards) and Alt buttons then tap the letter U and same again when the next option appears.

On my old computer I could hit control, alt, delete...twice.

Alt+F4 is my favorite key combo for closing things, quicker than using the mouse for me.

Shortcuts." It might be a good idea if anyone is interested to find and print. I had hit the power button before, but no joy. Tried holding and it worked as you said. I have a "Re-Boot" button located just below the power button that I use sometimes. Grady

thanks, I know about the power button, but was trying to avoid that. I wanted to shut down some windows before hitting the power button. My husband was trying to back up some pics and plugged in a Maxtor One-Touch and it killed the mouse, (wireless). In an attempt to shut down Adobe Photoshop, he was using arrows and enter keys and had so many things open, and couldn't close them.

By the time I got to the computer, he had IE, Firefox and AOL all running, Task Manager, My Computer, Adobe Photoshop, msconfig, etc,etc. I couldn't shut any of them down except to Power Off. I was hoping there was a way to shut down processes with the keyboard. I was worried about his pictures. But I had to hit the power button anyway.
What a mess and now the mouse is dead. Don't know what happened.

Sorry, wanted to say, Thank You Mikie! - that was the answer. I knew there was a way to use the keyboard to close things. Perfect.
Owbist, I have the Windows key between Ctrl and Alt and when I tapped U, I got a voice speaking. 'Narrator.'?? That was a first.

Another way.
Windows XP Shutdown Computer
Press the Windows Logo Key on your lower left than
use the Arrow Keys to go to Turn Computer Off
Press Enter Key to confirm

I use Alt+F4 to close popup/unders that get past the google toolbar.

Thanks for all these suggestions! Tumblenweed, I printed up the Keyboard Tips. Will keep this near both machines. How frustrating when the mouse dies. But now there's a way to shut everything off.
