Hi smom, I feel for you. I relocated here from the tropics. I had to relearn everything and after gardening here for 16+ years, I thought I pretty much knew almost everything about gardening. Guess what? I went to Southern CA last March after the last visit in the 70's, I was totally disoriented. I recognized only about 10 - 15% of the plants/shrubs/trees I saw and wouldn't know beans if I had to garden in that climate. Plants are resilient. If you chose the ones listed as hardy in your zone or hardier, they will do fine. You'll be surprised comes spring. Best of luck & Happy New Year! P.S. To answer your question, you just go with what the weather gives you. I was playing with my compost piles and building raised beds until a week ago when a flu struck me and been cooping up indoors, but it is warming up now and might go out to check my compost piles and the garden. But maybe not today yet, because it will not seem right to call in sick from work then go play in the garden....LOL.

I have been there and done that. Your board sounds like a slightly-less-twisted version of the board in my former condo building. You really have to weigh what is most important to you. Are you willing to fight these lunatics on every. single. point. until. the. end. of. time??? If so, then stay and/or buy another unit in this same complex. If you think they'll eventually let up, DON'T! You have described an association that is either too intimidated or too apathetic to get involved. The board, as it is now, has little or no chance of changing because the other homeowners just do not care enough to get involved. My choice in this circumstance was to get the he!! out. I made it just in time, too. Just after the sale of my unit, the association slapped everyone with a $5,000-$10,000-per-unit special assessment (much of which they pocketed). They became involved in lawsuit after lawsuit, some of which continue to this day. Who pays for that? The homeowners, of course. Payment of legal fees comes out of their association fees. It's your decision to stay or leave. But after reading your story, I sense that in a few more months, you'll be where I was two years ago.

My house which is a mcm has a huge atrium with floor to ceiling glass all around. It is visible from most of the house. I would only plant in pots. My floor is terrazzo tile with a drain in the center. There is a water faucet and electric in there too. It is one of the things that I will miss most when it sells. We put our Christmas tree in it too. I had 3 plant hanging stands that I would hang various colors of flower plants. I had hooks around the top edges to hang baskets. I had some benches made to fit around the perimeter that drained well and sat bigger pots on those. I had a small propane BBQ grill I uses in there. I did have a fountain in it for a while. I liked changing it up every year. There's a lot of pictures around here at GW of my atrium that might come up on a search especially on the kitchen table forum. It is very important to keep your wood in there well treated and sealed or you will quickly have rot. Having soil and planting in the ground will make this much worse which is why I only did containers.

I don't see it, nor do I see "Computer Help" that you refer to. But I am not using FF as I believe you do for this forum.

I see it on the main page of the computer help forum, not on this page.
I don't see it using my android tablet, which does not use firefox.

I see it, OS X running Firefox.

There's something off in the coding of the page but it's far too early for me to try and figure it out.

At the top, under the green Garden Web banner, I see

Computer Help Forum, to the left side of the page.

Still there, on the main page under the green garden web banner Computer Help Forum on the left and in the center just directly below the search box is where I am seeing those characters.
Yes I am using firefox. When I was on my android tablet and my phone I do not see them.

Yes I assume it is some type of page coding but have no idea what. Is there normally some kind of picture up there maybe?

I happened by here just after you first posted your query yesterday, Raven...and although I didn't have the problem you're having, I did notice a smaller version of the iVillage logo at the exact spot that you report seeing this conglomeration of symbols. I was in a hurry to shut down my system and knowing that you always manage to find solutions to computer glitches...I didn't reply to your post. I returned a little while ago [today] and read this thread. The iVillage logo is gone from that area on the main page, but I'm wondering if that may have had something to do with what you've been seeing. Perhaps a bit of sloppy coding by an iVillage programmer that your browser picks up on. I use IE8, Win7 Home Premium with Office 2010.

looks like they're intended to close a CDATA. This is not my realm of expertise, but I think the double slash is not supposed to precede the double closing square brackets. all browsers have homebrew error handling, so some browsers don't act like others.
firefox10 isn't showing this.
btw, some of these cdata scripts are document.write which are stinky.

btw, where's the website improvements forum? to report spam? the contact form http://letters.gardenweb.com/letters/nph-ind.cgi has some weird captcha scripts.

I am having to post this from another computer and Konqueror browser.
Since the appearance of the strange characters I can not click on any of the options at the top of the main pages on any GW forum including the create new post none of them are clickable on any forum. Also I can not post a reply here on this thread because the entire reply box has somehow become linked to the brackets square link that is in ccdrys post right up above this one. If I click in the reply box it immediately goes right to the google page in his link.
I have let Tamara know of this, if anyone else is having these problems please post about it and let them know using the contact us button.

I can not access them using my Linux with firefox, windows 7 laptop with firefox, but can access them with my Android tablet and Android smartphone, and I can access it using Linux with the Konqueror browser. So knowing what does and does not work would be helpful.

Everything was working fine till the appearance of those strange characters.

this gets even strager. I posted the 12th post above but the count shows 11 posts, and I can not see my last post using any of my computers using fiefox, I am only able to see it and post like this from my laptop using Ie.

I think one problem is that the link posted by ccdry activated the CDATA code those strange brackets and somehow that is causing part of the problem.

I am just baffled. So on my regular pc I will not be able to see this post either or any other posts after the one by ccdry. on my windows 7 laptop there is not even a reply box showing the last thing showing is that link.
If any one replies you might want to just start a new thread since this one is messed up. LOL
