I think there's two issues at work with your comment mikie. The first, which many historians have spoken about, is that the lost habits of letter and diary writing mean that much less material will be available for historical analysis in the future. Email archives aren't as common as boxes stuffed with old letters, and email archives typically have much more worthless stuff in them. The second thing, the changes in storage media over time, I think isn't so much of a problem. There used to be lots of stuff stored on 8 and 5.25 inch floppy disks. They're not lost to the future, that worth keeping was migrated to later generations of storage media. Places like the Library of Congress and National Archives are digitizing many parts of their collections to protect the availability of their contents for the future. All that stuff gets rolled forward as technology changes.

There is another post here this week asking about lcd monitors you might look for it. I have a 19" Acer and Love it. As I said on that thread one of the main reasons I chose Acer is the 3 yr warranty, plus the fact it is an awesome monitor. Most only come with a 1 yr warranty. The prices on the Acers lately have been great. I have seen them at around $179-$189 range. I got mine at Buy.com. It is also a super simple monitor to add to you system it is fully plug and play no drivers to mess with no software to load. The most important thing to consider is the connections, do you need analog or digital or can you use either one. Check on your pc to make sure you get a monitor that has the correct connections. This is the spec info on my Acer and it works and looks great. It does everything I need it to do. I use analog because I use a KVM switch for connection of all my computers to my one monitor, works flawlessly and even in linux it has no problems. FWiW The Lenovo OneKey Recovery. It loads its own recovery environment but it does use the laptop display... and there are several mouse clicks to be able to use it. Lenovo has a couple of Recovery partitions & will load the operating system to the drives to a like new state. It also has restore backup and images capabilities if you set it up to do so from within windows originally. Sounds like the display or display adapter is bad, as it wont even run the display from outside of windows correctly. Or possibly the display drivers have been given a virus - Hooking up a separate monitor, if it works..run a virus scan - Or use the OneKey recovery to bring it back to the like new state, both might be might be worth a try.. before returning it to some distant repair center. I surely would do it here. The OneKey virus scan is actually McAfee that updates and scans boot sectors of all partitions and offers a quick or full everything scan... very long scans both of them. Its nice to have made the Recovery DVD Disks and keep those stored away safely too, for when the hard drive fails or becomes not accessible.
