Flat Panel Monitor - Contrast Ratio ??

Pooh Bear

I need a new (or good, used) monitor.

The color on this one went wonky.

I can get a used CRT monitor no problem.

But for a bit more money I can get a flat panel monitor.

I am thinking about a 19 inch monitor.

I keep seeing a reference to "contrast ratio".

Seems to be anywhere from 500:1 up to 2500:1

The monitors I can afford are in the lower range

of values, 500:1 to 1000:1, usually 700:1

How much should I pay attention to these numbers.

....you need to view the image in a completely darkened room to be able to perceive the marginal difference between a 2000:1 and a 500:1 contrast ratio. Otherwise paying extra for a high contrast ratio monitor would be waste of money since in moderate ambient light conditions such as a living room, anything higher than 500:1 would not be perceivable by the eye.

Thanks.
