problem with MS Works 9.0 and pasting text

I have a relatively new Dell laptop, running Windows 7. It came loaded with Microsoft Works 9.0. Most of the time, I cannot paste in text I've copied from elsewhere. Once in awhile it works, but mostly not. It doesn't seem to matter if the text is from a web site or an email, though it doesn't seem to mind if the source is another Works document. When I try to paste, it pauses to think about it (little blue circle, going round and round) and then a small window opens that declares that Microsoft Works Word Processor has stopped working. Then I get two choices: close the program or check online for a solution and then close the program. Needless to say, no solution ever comes up. Help!

It seems almost as though you do not have enough memory to process the work but a simple cut and paste would not require excessive amounts of resources. How much memory (RAM) does the computer have? Have you ever had an experience like this while doing anything else on the computer?

Near the clock is a small flag, have you hovered over or clicked that to see the problem solver? (I realise you checked from a pop up but....

Are your safety programs working correctly? Click Start, Control panel, Review your security status (top left corner) then click the down arrow beside security to see if things are working alright.

Just for fun.

Try to use Edit > Paste Special in Works instead of using the normal paste. See if that works.

Thank you for the reply. Things have not improved and I've been doing research to find out why. It's only me, one guy, so maybe it's my problem. Lets get this straight: You click on Start > programs > MS Works > MS Works Database > by default blank database is selected > OK > gives you Create database with general selected on the field tab. Now where it says Field1 you type in NAME (for example) > add > done. You now have a 1 column database with a column heading of NAME. Right? Now the 1st field in Row 1 is highlighted. Right? Now you click the data entry bar and type in a name -John- and nothing appears in the blank field. Right? The column heading NAME is replacd with the word John. Right? This cannot be. What you MUST be doing is changing the name of the field. Thats done by clicking the heading (NAME) > format, which calls up the format box with 5 tabs the 1st of which is the field tab with general selected, > then proceding as you did originally and as I described above in my 1st paragraph. Go to the help menu and look for 'rename a field' and see if that isn't what you are doing. Also in the help menu find or type in add and look at "add a field" see if that isn't what you are doing to/instead/and. I think you may be confused as to what is a field and what is a report in the context of this datasheet.

....can't paste in Yahoo with my mouse either. Same with gmail. I use the edit (up in the upper left). The drop-down paste then works for me. I just noticed the edit, drop-down paste is labeled control-V. duh.

I just saw your note ZEP about Paste Special

I don't know if it works in WORKS but I love it and use it all the time in WORD Be sure to click on Unformatted Text so that when it is pasted it goes into your document in your format
JUst butting in here but I didn't know anyone corresponded with WORKS documents anymore

zep516--THANK YOU!!! That solved the problem.
I may regret this, but I'm curious: why does that work and a simple "paste" doesn't? I'm not crazy about MS Works--I prefer Word--but that's what the laptop came loaded with.

I think it has to do with a format issue, that's all I know and want to know. At first I thought it was a clip board problem.

You can use paste special to make the task of pasting text go more smoothly by choosing which formatting you want to keep (source or destination) or stripping the text of any formatting at all.
