Would black granite work with carrara and white subways?

In my kids' bath, I have carrara honed marble basketweave on the floor with a dot of nero black, matte white subways on the wall, and a band of marble (grey/black/white) around the wainscoted wall. The vanity will be painted white.

I am trying to decide on countertop material.

Marble would look smashing but isn't really practical for 2 small girls in the bathroom.

I looked at Misty Carrara Caesarstone but it is too beige-y. Blizzard Caesarstone is okay but not great.

I have spoken with my kitchen counter guy who is doing my soapstone and he said I can have anything from his boneyard and I'll just pay the cost of fabrication and installation. (he's clearing out his stock and selling his business). I'm going there tomorrow to see if there is anything that will work, but I"m terrible at visualizing what will work.

I can see a white / grey granite looking good, maybe a greyish soapstone, or possibly a black granite or soapstone. If I don't find something I love there I'll pay to get the right material, but I can't visualize well what would look good. Would black be too harsh / severe / formal? I'm going for a classic old house look but not a formal look if that makes any sense.

Any thoughts?

Blue Pearl really isn't blue, it's grey, silvery, charcoal and looks stunning with the right lighting.

it all depends on the grade of blue pearl that you get. most of the blue pearl I see, trust me-- it's blue. :-)

Black, white, and grey. A classic combination. :-) You're right, though, in that something like honed carrara would look more traditional.

How long will the sight line be looking at the sink? If it is a long view, then yes I would probably have a problem with the p trap and lines not being centered. If you really can't see the sink until you are at it (as is the case with small baths) I wouldn't mind at all. Is it a guest bath as is when you have guests sleeping over? Or a guest bath for anyone you have any guests in the house? I think that too would determine if the pipes not being centered would bug me. We are doing something similar in some respects -- white perimeter cabinets (white dove); quarter sawn oak island stained "pecan"., oak floors. We are using River White (leathered) for both. Our slab has a touch of yellow/gold in it, but not very much, so I think it depends on your slab. We wanted a granite with a ligth background that went well with both white and wood -- River White was one of the few that did, I think in part because it does have some of the gold tones in it. It also has a lot of burgandy, which I think would look great with cherry cabinets.

I wasn't sure about white cabs, white subway, and then black(ish) counters. I looked on Houzz for something similar and came up with these. Click on each photo for a better view. I think I agree that white could be good, but you need to check your specific white against the white of your cabinets. I Think it all depends on your taste. It may be a bit shiny with both the absolute black and a glossy backsplash.. but it is all preference. I have AB and the "mirror" image makes me a little cooky at times, so I decided to go with a tumbled travertine backsplash.. But only b/c I don't like too much shine. Go with what YOU like maybe buy a few samples of the tile and make a sample board leave it up for a few days and see how it feels. Good luck!

I did a similar mix in our master bath. We have basketweave Carrara w/ black in centers and carrara subway tile, We have a white painted vanity and very dark gray granite that looks like soapstone. It looks sharp (my contractor took pics for his future customers to see) and we just love the look, It's classic, but not at all stuffy.

Of course, so would blue pearl!!

Or ANY dark stone, for that matter.

I don't even know the name, but it looks VERY similar to the counter and tub surround in bill vincent's post just above -- with maybe less sheen.

I'm doing my kids bath in a marble look alike Italian porcelain. The vanity is white and I'm doing a blue pearl granite top. I wouldn't want black for the dust issues. My parents have a dark granite and while it looks fantastic clean, it shows every fingerprint, dust particle, etc. Ever notice the lint from TP? That would show up on black granite, IMO.

Blue Pearl really isn't blue, it's grey, silvery, charcoal and looks stunning with the right lighting. I also wouldn't want soapstone in a kids bathroom. It might look fantastic going in, but the 'patina' caused by the kids using it would drive me nuts.

Sandra's right. We have polished black granite in our boys' bath, and it never looks clean for more than an hour.

I'd go for grey.

The slabs and remnants that I was shown to select from did have some blues in them, but there is a huge variance in colors available in Blue Pearl. I saw blues, but many shades of greys, with silver and charcoal which is the color scheme I selected. If you want to find blues, you will, but if you are looking for grey, silver and charcoal, that selection is also available. It's a stunning combo with marble, IMO.

We have honed black in all our baths. I love it. We also have a classic "new" old house. Here's a few of our bathrooms. bathrooms.

I have Blue Pearl and Absolute Black and Blue Pearl does have blue in it. It looks grayish from a difference but with the light on it, it is very sparkly blue.

Absolute Black is the absolute best stone next to white marble. What a tuxedo deal is that! Wow. I can see why the contractor took pictures. If I could redo my kitchen, I would do white marble and absolute black in a Sylacauga second.
