Reading an eBook on my PC.

I think I want an eBook reader but I think I might also like to read on a netbook or the ePad. I decided to test my theory by reading a book on my PC. I downloaded Microsort Reader and trudged through the "activation" but I am not certain if it is really working. I don't want to buy a eBook and find that I can't read it. I can also download in PDF format and read it on the Adobe Reader. I do have the Adobe Reader on my PC. If I download an eBook in the PDF format should I expect to read it without lots of trouble shooting? I am "Computerdyslexic" and also very stubborn. If I find I can't read the book I will spend hours trying to make it work and drive myself crazy. Is there an easy way to accomplish downloading and reading an eBook?

I use and love the product by amazon which is free for the pc Kindle for pc, you can download it in just minutes, and you can get a lot of free books from the amazon store so you can try it out with out buying a thing, I have a nice library on my pc made up of totally free books.

to find free books just do a search like this one but be sure you double check that the book you are looking at is free before you hit that button.
"free kindle books list"
It will be sent directly to your kindle for pc that you have selected it to go to.

If you do a search here on garden web for Kindle for pc you will find a good thread discussing it.

Hi Raven,
I am considering getting something to read books on that will be the most versatile. The idea of a net book has intrigued me since they came out becauase it is so much easier to tote around, compared to my laptop. I am also put off because I can't go to a store and actually hold and use a Kindle. I did see the Nook at B+N and I liked it.

Oh yea, and here are most of my jars after processing. You guys got me so excited about canning, I bought a new to me, Ebay old 21 Qt Presto canner this week-end and the conversion outlet to use the new style weight set. Com'on Summer and lot's of new tomatos. Keep canning!

Thanks for the info. I went to BJ's today and saw the Sony's two models. They are very firmly nailed down so I couldn't really hold them. The 10.1 inch Acer was also on display. I think having only one piece with the Kindle as opposed to the two pieces of a netbook is a decided advantage. Buying either one is a good dent in my budget. If I had a netbook I think I wouldn't ever bother to lug my laptop anywhere. I have used it in motels and for when my PC was down, but otherwise, it sits on the top shelf of the computer desk. The netbook could do double duty as a PC laptop mini and a reader. OTOH, the smaller e-reader would be the most practical and comfortable for me. I slump into my recliner and usually have from 1 to 3 cats on my chest and lap. When they are with me it is awkward to turn pages. I guess I'll have to wring my hands and work on a decision for a while longer. I do have another question; who would repair a Kindle if it had problems accessing their site and downloading? I have enough problems finding somebody both good and affordable to fix my computer. Nancy

If you use a cell phone, check with your phone carrier. Blackberry phone. If computers are available at these Dance joints, you can save files to a usb flash drive and use it anywhere. $10 and up depending on how many bytes you want... 4gb is nice size and frequently found now for $35 Here is a link that might be useful: http://www.blackberry.com/

cherryfizz, with a Kindle, you plug it into your computer. When your computer open the prompt box, choose "open to view folders". The you just copy and paste the .pdf file into the folder than contains your books on you Kindle. It *may* be the same way for Kobo's and Nooks. Oh, and me brag about owning a Kindle? me? ME? I use the kindle for pc on my netbook it works very well for me. Wish I could afford one of the actual Kindle's but since I can not the kindle for pc on my netbook is the next best thing.

Since RC initially posted about the free Kindle for PC, I have installed on my new laptop and have read several books, all free. Much better than traipsing to the library to get a hard copy of a book. I don't use this a lot, but when I have an hour or so of leisure time, I take my laptop to my lounge chair and sit there to read. My laptop is a 14" one, but I think the smaller netbooks would be perfect for this.

I installed Kindle for PC and am reading a book now. I don't like sitting in a desk chair and reading from the monitor. I think my laptop is too big to have on my lap in the recliner for very long. Netbooks are getting more affordable and I may go that way. I never did get past the "activation" for the Microsoft Reader. I guess I am just too computer challenged to understand Microsoft.
