Big Box Store Hipps ---- UGGH
Comments (38)Boy, did I get deleted? I cant find my posted experience at the big stores. I went to Lowes and all of their bulbs are bloomed and done IN the boxes, at $8.98 a box! No markdown. Then I went to Target and I manage to get 2 RedLion huge bulbs in great shape, for $7 total!, in a jute bag, unique. Both have 2 bloom stalks peeking out of the bulbs. The ones that they put on sale in their weekly ads, in ceramic pots and soil for $7 each were all bloomed out in the boxes and looked like Lowes bulbs, basically dead in the box. Talk about a rip off. Some 'Sale'...$7 plain old Red Lion,Minervas, all bloomed out in the boxes, and the bulbs starting to rot in the boxes. Luckily I am not 'hoarding Papilios from all over the USA,from EBay. I am getting 3 HUGE ones now. The first one arrived yesterday, with a peeking bloom stalk, over 24cm,and rock hard AND a bulblet on it! That was a great buy. The next one says the bulb is 32cm! I won it last night. I tripled checked with the seller about the size, I never had one THAT big. She promised me it is that big! And it is forced and ready to bloom, at least 1 stalk is showing now. I managed to get it for less than the huge one that arrived already. And that one is beautiful. Then I have a 3rd one coming, at 22-24cm with a bud stalk peeking out as well. Getting them from all over the USA. Some say they are the 'new' type that have 4 blooms per bloom stalk, instead of only 2 flowers. And I bought an 'EverGreen' from Park Seed! For only $10.69,plus $9 shipping! Half the price I was going to pay from a catalog. And then my big 'Green Dragon' bulb is suppose to be shipped this week. So i will have a flush of unusual colors and types in a few months. Plus two Red Lions with 4 bloom stalks, maybe right at Christmas. But the big store 'deals' are a joke! At least in Ft.Lauderdale. Be careful, open the boxes....See MoreFaucets from Big Box stores truly Lower quality?
Comments (118)@jwillhouse - Your plumber has a vested interest in convincing you to buy things with a markup. I can assure you that the same part numbers are the same no matter where the faucet is ordered from. As for your contract with your plumber, is it a time and materials contract or cost plus contract? Your post notes that your plumber lists retail, wholesale, and a 15% markup. If it is a time and materials contract and the 15% is the mark up from wholesale to retail, then it is on the low end of markups. If it is a cost plus contract then the markup is on his actual cost less any rebates, so the 15% should get added to what he actually paid not the listed wholesale price. In a cost plus contract, the 15% is likely unavoidable as it is still a cost even if you buy it somewhere else. Many contractors in a time and materials contract don't allow you to supply your own items. --- While it is absolutely true that you can benefit from sourcing products cheaper from sources other than you plumber, we should recognize that to some extent it is a zero sum game. Most plumbers are not getting rich off a single family home, they are just finding alternative ways to present the profit they need to make. So while adding profit to a faucet may seem like a ripoff, if all the faucets were bid at cost the plumber would likely just charge more for the installation and you would be in the same position. It can still be an advantage to you to get your faucet at a cheaper price if your plumber allows, but don't fall into the trap of thinking you are getting ripped off just because the plumber adds profit there instead of somewhere else....See MorePlumbing supply store v. Comments (12)As someone who works internally at one of the top toilet/bath/faucet companies in the US, I can tell you that toilets and bath tubs sold at big box stores and plumbing supply stores are the same. As another member mentioned, as long as the model numbers match between retailers, it is the same product. Plumbing supply stores certainly offer more high-end products, but the big-box stores actually tend to get the newer/higher-tech offerings first. As long as you see the specs you want (tub materials, flush type, etc.) I wouldn't worry about where I'm purchasing these products. And no one sells "factory-seconds" to a big-box store. The risk is far too great, as all of the companies in this field make around 75% of their money from these big-box stores. The buyers at the big-box stores are extremely picky (rightfully so) and would throw us out if we started sending them "seconds". Faucets are a slightly different story. Suppliers are squeezed pretty hard to offer the lowest cost products to the big box stores, so they tend to have lower quality (read: plastic) internal parts. Plumbing supply stores generally stick to the brass internals, but offer them at a higher price. Keep in mind, these are DIFFERENT products. As above, check part numbers if you are concerned. For the most part, the big box stores want exclusive products, so you more than likely won't find the same products (sold in-store at Lowe's/HD) at plumbing supply houses. Don't be afraid, however, to order something off the Lowe's or HD websites, as they'll typically carry those all-metal, higher quality parts to sell online vs their value-focused in-store products....See MoreIs a Kraus from a big box store same quality as one from local supply
Comments (15)“Same fake Germanic name asian imports wherever you buy them.” Just to be clear, the above statement applies also to Blanco and Franke. Both companies have 2 tiers of sinks. The ones that are $1100+ are made in Germany and Switzerland respectively. The sinks from those brands priced below that are made in China. That does not mean they are inferior sinks. Though Kraus sinks are the thicker 16 gauge; Blanco and Franke sinks are thinner 18 gauge. And at least Kraus is transparent about where its sinks are made. Kraus sinks have been popular on this forum for years, and get good reviews....See MoreBunny
