What is Adobe 'Air'?

I just finished e-filing my taxes and had to download the latest Adobe Reader in order to print. I noticed that something other than the usual download site came up and that the download was extremely fast. Then I found three icons on my desktop: one for Adobe Reader, one for Adobe "Air" along with a Eula when I clicked on it, and the third a folder containing files for both Adobe and Adobe "Air".

I'm wondering if this is a downloader that will work with other apps besides Adobe or if it's just something else cluttering up my system.

Guess I should spend some Google time on this, but thought it might be something others should be made aware of.

Good question I have been seeing it other users add/remove list an have wondered what it is.

"..... and it still shows up....." Does it still appear in the Add/Remove utility? Have you done a manual search of the Program Files Folder on the C:/ drive to see if it is indeed still there? If you have CCleaner use its utility to determine if it is reported still apparent. Have you done a START>Search to see what type of files if any are still in existence? I am asking all this as it does happen on occasion that after an application has been removed the entry will still appear in the Add/Remove reports. CCleaner will remove any erroneous entry if it is determined to be so. DA

zep, I know it is a Anti virus software BUT it does tell me when a main program like Thunderbird & Firefox is not up to date...the adobe ones is another one it warns U about if they aren't up to date. It doesn't do the windows updates. I had a update on avast a few days ago. Now when I put the curcer on the rolling ball a popup says, "everything is good" then it gives me the (version I think) which is 214.9.0.2006 under that is 131024.0 Anyway mine is up to date as I try to keep things updated for security. Thanks Mikie, again! It is the same one I tried to install. It has their toolbar. Its almost impossible to get rid of it once installed. They have made it mandatory to take their seach toolbar with the free ZA. Probably even throw it in with the paid version. Last year you could install by clicking 'skip all offers' but even clicking it installs the search toolbar. I'm running Win XP and need a firewall. Jane

The condensed version of the description is that Adobe air allows people to create programs that are somewhat like flash instead of like regular windows executables. That's sort of an oversimplification, but it's the best description I can come up with in a few words.

grandms, I have no knowledge about your e-filing form (I am in the U.K.) but I presume that it would be in "standard" pdf format.

I use the excellent, free and full featured PDF-XChange Viewer to work with and print pdfs because I absolutely refuse to have the intrusive and bloated Adobe Reader on my system.

It's certainly worth a try - and I prefer it to Foxit PDF Reader that has been mentioned previously on this forum.

I did find out in reading several things that Air allows one to use applications without opening a browser. I was wrong about it's being some sort of download aide. As I understand, for someone like me it has little "real world" use. I intend to remove it via Control Panel Add/Remove. Add Adobe to your list of shame for forcing unwanted downloads on us.

I have the PDF-Xchange Viewer and like you prefer it over Adobe hands down.
