laptop choice... pc or mac

I would like a laptop. Of course I cannot afford a new one so I will have to go with a refurbished. I can get an IMB thinkpad for 529.00 or should I look at an apple instead? Right now I have all pc's in my house.

Also. should I consider looking on e bay?

Circuit City has Toshiba starting at $499
I dont know when the next round of laptop sales will be but usually you can find a few at $500 and less brand new.

many companies still sell xp laptops, here is a search at tigerdirect for laptops with xp XP Pro Laptops buy.com also has quite a few. just search for new laptops with windows xp and you will find them. Some that come up will be the new small netbooks so if you do not want those you will just have to wade through them to get the full size laptops. be cautious because some places do sell refurbished models but they are always labeled as such. below is the search link from buy.com another option is to go to a company like cyberpowerpc and configure your own pc and have them build it for you with exactly what you want on it, they do offer xp. CrazyCam 3.0 CrazyCam is an application made in Flex for Adobe AIR. With this application, you can have the same fun on any platform that Mac-users already have with Photo Booth. All you need is a webcam and some inspiration to make the funniest or craziest pictures ever and all you have to do is choose an effect (out of 33 effect types) and push the button. Simple as that. Within a couple months of your niece's acquisition of the Mac (assuming OS-X) you'll be considering converting your entire household. It isn't a "plunge"....it's a massage/jacuzzi/etc....with a happy ending. I'm biased. I switched three years ago after decades with PC/windows. Changed my computer-life entirely.....from wasting mega-time maintaing the stupid box and OS to forgetting all that crappola and actually getting things done. Thing just sits here and runs. First box I've owned since 1985 that actually does that -- and nothing else. Yup...I'm very biased.

I agree with Snidely, it is easier for a novice user to use a MAC than a window PC. MAC OS system and interfaces implemented/used by its applications are a lot more elegant, efficient and user friendly. MAC's hardware and software are less "open" than Window's, therefore, it has a lot less virus introduced by applications and less compatibility issues between OS and Applications. I like the 'almost' seamless integration among all the apple products/devices. In spite of having an IT division to support, we frequently have PC issues at work. I purchased my first MAC for home use in the summer of 2014, so far I have encountered zero problem. "At home with our computer nerd dad we were free to experiment on our own and get really comfortable with computers from an early age". YOU may not remember how much your parents had to pay to clean up your computers. While our children grew up we also highly encouraged them to have "hands on" experience. We are computer nerd parents working in Engineering, and with Computer Science degree, yet we still paid dearly to have 'professional' to clean up our children's virus infested Window PCs many times. For MAC new users, Apple's one year support program is a great deal. During one year, the new user could use it as many times as possible by attending trainings, group learning sessions and phone in questions to fully learn the system. The support is many times better than the technical support provided by any PC sellers.

CC is currently running a great sale through this entire week, I think. If you order online, you get a coupon code to take an additional 10% off your order. Then you can either pick it up at a nearby store or have it delivered. Every computer in stock is reduced, including brand new models.

We just bought a Sony 40" 1080p HDTV at a great sale price, and then, by ordering it online, they took off an additional 10%. The delivery was free. It came today.

Have you considered looking on your local Craigs list? I have found it to be a wealth of computer sources and they are all local so you can go see them and try them before buying. I just bought a fabulous new pc from my local Craigs list for around $200 this pc is worth more than double that amount, plus the person I bought it from was extremely nice and I feel I have a new friend out of the deal too.

IBM thinkpads are very good laptops. We have one and it has just been a workhorse with not a single problem.
Buying used you have a very good possibility of getting one with XP also instead of Vista, new ones mostly have Vista. An added bonus is if you wanted to try a linux version in the future IBM laptops are very compatible with most linux distros.
