Hughs Net or Wildblue satellite

Help, need to make a decision on which one is best. I already ordered Hughs so if I was to change my mind I have to do it fast. I am looking for advice, reviews, comparisons, reliability etc...if anyone has either one or knows of any websites with reviews etc.. please share. Thanks, Terri

Sunshine, contact Wild Blue and see if you would be put on the new satellite, Wild Blue 1. If so, this might be the way you'd want to go. Remember, satellite is not like dsl or cable---there are some things you may not be able to do such as VOIP, but it sure beats dialup. I don't know that there's really a big difference between these two providers, as I have read pros and con about each and some customers are satisfied and some are not. The main thing is a good installation by a trained technician. Don't allow just any TV satellite installer to do the job. I chose Wild Blue because of the difference in cost. Shortly after that, Hughes Net lowered the cost of their monthly plan to better compete with Wild Blue, which is a relatively new service. I have the basic plan of $49.95 per month, and it provides plenty of bandwidth and speed for me, but for a really heavy user, you'd need one of the more expensive plans. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I can't speak for how good Wild Blue is, but my borhter signed up for it. He waited and waited but didn't hear from them for a long time. When he called them, he was told they were having trouble with their satellite. He had to call them several more times over several months (they never would call him) to find out what was going on. He finally gave up and went with Hughes, and he's very happy with it.

We're also out in the country where there's no cable internet, no DSL, and no wireless. We've had Starband for almost four years, and I am generally pleased with it. It was expensive to have installed, but I think it's come down in price for the installation. In the South, we get a nice, strong signal, and light rain/fog don't make the service go down. Sometimes a big storm clouds will, if they're close and toward the south, where the dish is aimed. However, it's very, very difficult to get through to their customer service, which is not 24/7/365. I haven't needed it much, but when I have, yikes. I don't know how Wildblue is in that regard. Starband started off better with cust. service, and went downhill slowly over the last couple years. My modem died, and I had to replace it, and that was very quick.

My little netbook acts the way my PC used to. I turned it on and after it found the network I went to one of my son's several fabulous sites where he displays beautiful photos of birds. He is the most avid birder imaginable and he has become an excellent amateur photographer. He has an extremely expensive digital SLR camera, long distance scopes and lenses and macro lenses. He is also proficient in Adobe Photo Shop. I know his large pictures are fairly big files. They snapped onto the screen faster than I could look at them in a book by turning pages. I KNOW my PC is the problem. Knowing what is causing the slow downloads is enough to make me get past being annoyed. I will work on all the suggestions to speed up my Dell and stop cursing TDS for a slow DSL. Nancy

Limewire will work with any type of internet connection. I don't know what you mean by fair access You don't have to share anything on your computer. If you get Limewire, go to Tools/ Options/ Sharing, and uncheck the sharing folder and uncheck Share Finished Downloads. You really don't want to be sharing downloaded songs and let people draw from your computer. If it is a copyright song, you would be considered a distributor if you are sharing it with others. I know millions of people download and share songs, but to be on the safe side, go to where I said an uncheck the boxes so as not to be sharing. Limewire has no fair access like some programs where you needed to share x amount to get x amount. LimeWire Pro 4.12.15 Final and LimeWire Pro 4.13.12 Beta just came out today.

No need to abandon AVG if you are happy with it as millions are. You NEED a firewall. Zonealarm is probably the most popular free firewall out there. Comodo is good but requires a little more input from the user. You should also have some anti malware programs on the computer too. Select at least two, perhaps Spybot Search & Destroy, Spywarebleaster, AVG antimalware, AVG anti rootkit, BOClean or any other such program. Of course none are any good unless they are updated regularly and ran as many free programs are not automatically updated and ran run.

Here's my speed using Hughes satellite.
I've been using it for over 6 years now .Have been happy with the speed but the only thing I sometimes have a problem with is when I bump up against their maximum download I think it's something like 150 megs per day. {{gwi:1437535}}

WildBlue uses a different FAP. It is a rolling 30 day system, so if you have a huge download you need to do one day, it doesn't throttle you back. Depends on how you use your system as to which system is better for you.

I do not do a lot of downloading at all, mostly due to the slow speed of my dial up. That could change a lot with being able to download so fast but doubt I will go crazy with it. I have decided to go with Hughe's & have it mounted on a pole. Friday is the Big day for me. Thanks a million for everyone's help. Terri

Pole mount is the way to go.Keep an eye on the installer and do not be afraid to ask questions.Make sure he grounds the dish and uses good quality cable.Use plenty of sackcrete and a heavy pole not one of the thin walled ones.You will like Hughesnet just make sure you get a good install.
