I don't believe there is a way to hook up two modems to the wiring and have them function independently. You might be able to use one in a "repeater" mode, though, and that could possibly be done wirelessly. There are also specific repeater devices you can get to extend the signal, and that might be easier to do. I suggest you contact the manufacturer of your modem to ask what is possible with that specific model, and whether they sell a repeater device that would be easier to set up than a second router. By the way, have you confirmed that the streaming does not work well, or is that just a statement in the manual? By the way, I have a similar situation. I have a DSL modem with a 3MB signal that is connected to a router in an upstairs closet; my tv system is in the living room downstairs. I have an older DVD player without a streaming capability, but wanted to be able to stream Netflix movies. I bought the Roku wireless device that Netflix sells, plugged it in to the back of my tv as an additional input, and set up the connection in about 2 minutes. I am able to get maximum quality every time I use it unless someone else is using a computer in another part of the house, in which case picture quality drops down a little.

Thanks, all, for clarifying the modem and helping me make up my mind. I just ordered a Motorola SB5101U. It's the same as what I have from Charter Cable. There's just something about owning than leasing, isn't there. RC, I had a modem problem in March/April. The first two guys did cable stuff although I kept saying it was the modem. It belonged to Charter. The third guy replaced the modem. Charter charged me for three service calls but wiped it out when they finally determined it was their modem. You're right on target. The newly ordered modem has a one year warranty. I plan to remain with Charter so maybe in time it'll work out. Maybe not. Anyway, thanks for everyones input. Gene

Did you have a question? I've had intermittent bouts of my RR modem not able to connect too. I'd schedule appt. (we're with Time Warner, not Bright House) then cancel because it was back. Friday it went out and I picked up a new modem Sat. which only worked til Sun. It had to be something else. Technician came, checked everything and changed out some old cable connections in basement that could be causing the problem. So far, so good. Don't know what you mean by PC Activity light, but the one that lets me know when I've got connection is the "ready" light on far right. I can just walk by and see if I'll have a connection or just not to bother. Its solid green, no blinking. Blinking=no connection. Power light stayed on even when connection was out. Power doesn't mean connected on mine, just that its on. Kind of lights are on but nobody's home. You may have a different modem though. Sandy

It's a little unclear to me what you are asking and if you are also @Suzy Lee, because If it's a remodel, there's probably already some service line to an outside "tv box" that may still be there, unless it was discarded and wires cut at the ground/roof mast. Based on your question about wifi, I may be explaining too much, so apologize if you already know this. You would run your coax (RG6 as mentioned) in homeruns to either the existing/new outside demarcation box or some interior point at the house wall/farther away (a media panel as mentioned where it comes through the outside wall, a media cabinet/closet somewhere, or just some random spot for a splitter). This would be a separate line from each tv and from where your modem and router (or modem/router combo) would be. - You can provide the outside demarcation box, but usually the service provider will install one (e.g. fiber optic is different from coax) and terminate their service line there. You can provide a siding mounting block if desired. - if you want the service provider to do interior runs, many use 3rd party installers you have to pay hourly, but it is best to DIY or pay your own contractor do it. - A modem converts the provider's signal for "internet access." That modem can be placed anywhere, but usually you locate it based on the router. For broadband (coax) service the line should be homerun from the outside demarc box to the modem location. - A router is what sends the wifi signal out from the modem, and you may have 1 central location for a small house, want it near a PC, or plan for extender/repeater or mesh throughout a larger house. So if it's not a combo modem/router and you want a stand-alone unit farther away from the modem, then you need to run minimum Cat5e to connect the two. - It is good to plan all the low voltage wiring: modem, router, any PCs, tvs, antennae, landlines, audio, and security. Along with that, electrical for wall-mount tvs and conduit for associated peripherals and surge protectors.
