Save Room For Dessert

I feel like we are on the downhill slide with Christmas getting nearer and nearer. I have been feeling a bit tired and overwhelmed this holiday season.

Has not helped that my younger brother has checked out of any assist with our elderly father. I am now solely responsible for dad. He is in a nursing home now. He had surgery a year ago and lost all muscle memory from the waist down. He has been doing okay at the home. He is the chairman of the welcoming committee and everyone seems to love him there form staff to other residents. My brother and I were trading off visiting since I work full time and he does not work at all, but, he has now decided he is much too busy...his life is too full of drama...he is too stressed out. OY! Family!

Anyway! We all know what helps to distract us when life throws us curve balls right? I changed out the dining table again. I went with red and white which feels out of character for me but I love the results.

So, did you save room for dessert?

This is so pretty!
I love the red and white, which is why I used it mostly on my Candy Cane Table.
Great job stacking the CP!
I'm loving the white tree in the background corner too!

Sorry to hear your brother is wimping out on you. We sure don't need any more stress this time of year.
Hang in there and take time to enjoy the season. Just do one thing at a time and it all eventually gets done.

Thanks for the bolstering words Candy. I always try to stay positive but somedays...man...it's hard :)
You are welcome to come enjoy Sour Cream Raisin Pie (DH's grandmother's recipe), rhubarb pie, mincemeat tarts, lemon tarts, and various cookies.
I have pictures on the camera of the tree you see in the background but need to upload them to my computer. We do 2 trees, the white tree is mine to decorate and the green tree in the family room is DH's to decorate. I go contemporary, he goes traditional :)I will get them uploaded before Christmas and share them, I promise :)

I'm thinking on bringing an autumnish aduki bean, winter squash and kombu soup. This is good hot or cold, since our weather won't exactly be autumnish Sunday, cold may be the better choice. If possible I'll throw together a loaf of homemade butter bread. Easy desserts for nice dessert spread

The following are for bar types of cookies because I think they're easier and faster. CHOCOLATE MARBLE SQUARES 1 C + 2 T. flour Â½ t. baking soda Â½ t. salt Â½ C. (1 stick) soft butter 6 T. white sugar 6 T. firmly packed brown sugar Â½ t. vanilla Â¼ t. water 1 egg Â½ C. chopped nuts 1 6 oz pkg chocolate chips Combine the dry ingredients. Set aside. Combine butter, both sugars, vanilla, and water. Beat until creamy. Beat in egg. Add flour mixture and beat well. Stir in nuts. Spread in a greased 9 x 13 in. pan. Sprinkle with the chips and bake at 375 for 1 minute. Remove from oven and run a knife through the mixture to marbelize the dough. Some chips will melt; some wonÂt. Return to oven and bake for 12-15 minutes longer. (ItÂll get tannish and look a teensy bit darker along the edges. Cool in the pan and cut into squares. Makes 24 decent sized ones. TOFFEE BARS This recipe needs to be made several days before eating.) 1 C. butter, softened 1 C. sugar (white) 2 C. sifted flour 1 egg, separated 1 tsp. vanilla Â½ C. finely chopped walnuts (or other decorations if nuts are a problem). Preheat oven to 275. Cream butter and sugar. Beat in the flour, egg yolk, and vanilla. Beat well. Spread (youÂll need to use your hands) in the bottom of a well greased 15 Â½ x 101/2 jelly roll pan. (I think theyÂre called half sheets.) Brush the top with the egg white. Sprinkle and then pat in thefinely chopped nuts. (You can use any kind of sprinkle instead of nuts.) Bake at 275 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Immediately cut into about 50 bars and remove from the baking sheet. Cool on a rack and store tightly covered for 3 days before eating. RASPBERRY BARS This recipe is one I found on this forum (I'm so sorry--I can't find whose it was and used the Search function but it didn't help to find the original poster and recipe.) I changed the recipe by using a larger pan and also sprinkled it with nuts instead of pieces of dough. Below is what I did. RASPBERRY BARS 2 Â½ C. flour 1 C. sugar 1 C. chopped pecans or walnuts 1 C. butter, softened 1 egg 1 10 oz. jar raspberry preserves Grease a jelly roll pan and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine all of the ingredients except the preserves. Beat until itÂs combined well and press the mixture into the jelly roll pan. Spread the raspberry preserves to about 1/3 inch from the edges. Bake for 30-50 minutes or till the edges are light tan color. Cool completely and cut into bars. Mazel Tov!

Middleton Place is another great plantation to see. Middleton has more formal gardens and livestock. It has a piece of the original home still standing. It was part of a pair of structures that flanked the bigger, central structure. Magnolia has the summer home they floated down the river from Summerville after the original was destroyed during the civil war. They intended to rebuild, but lost their fortunes after during the war and never recovered. Its gardens are beautiful as well. You wouldn't have time to see both in one day. Both plantations are close to each other. Skip Drayton Hall, it is more for architecture buffs - no formal gardens, etc. Boone Hall is a 'new' house made to look old, but the grounds are beautiful, and they still have slave quarters. If you don't have time for a plantation, I'd take a carriage tour, walk to the battery (on the water downtown), see Rainbow Row, visit the waterfront park, and tour the Calhoun mansion. First go to the visitors center on Meeting Street and see the movie about Charleston. You can look at the options of things to do, and decide what you are most interested in from there. There's a parking garage next door to it. I live in Summerville, and love Charleston, but this time of year everything is really crowded.

I must confess to not liking grits much...or at least I think I don't. I only had them once while in Florida many moons ago and swear they tasted like wallpaper paste. However I do like polenta so maybe it was just a very bad order of grits. It was at an IHOP so maybe thats a clue ! LOL Tyler cooked this recipe on his "Ultimate" show the other day and it looked awesome. Even this Canadian gal thinks she could manage to enjoy this dish! Love this R&W table! Those 'ribbon-y' plates are very festive for the season along w/the pretty red chargers! Nice placesettings & flatware on your bkgrd of 'white!' & the Irish mugs, so lovely!

But your centerpc is what creates the BLING on this t'scape! Wow! Your snowflake plates & adding all that red mercury glass ...along w/the small red ornies...ummmm, perfection! Candlelight, too. I'm glad you saved me a seat! Thanks, maxi! Jeanne s.

LOVE the plates, etc. Such an inviting table! Red is my favorite color so this one really calls to me! Sorry to hear about all of the issues you've had with your Dad and sorry that your brother has decided he's too busy to help out....been in your position since my mom is in a nursing home. My brother will do whatever I ask him to do, but volunteering isn't his strong point. It does get VERY tiring. Hang in there! Glad your Dad is doing well at the home, that is certainly a plus.

Kathe, shame on your bro but sounds like your dad is happy there. Glad to hear you haven't let him totally drag you down.

Pretty red and white table. Looks like your angel is watching over your table and you, I hope. Love that shot! What a pretty tree. Will be looking forward to some closeups.

What a neat set of plates and the cups are a wonderful shape and pattern. The red cp and candle holders are so pretty. All the red balls scattered are just cute and look great in your Candy shot.

I really like the red and white! Its such a great combo and I think one that's just very appealing in decor.

I too am really sorry your brother is behaving that way, its totally unfair to you. Not to mention your Dad. I am glad to hear how well your Dad is doing in the nursing home, and it sounds like he has a great personality! Obviously you inherited those genes instead of your brother! Family isn't always what we hope they'd be! (my oldest son has no use for me and sometimes its hard to deal with.)

Very pretty, love red/white anytime and your plates and mugs are such a pretty design. Glad you took time to do a little something fun to make yourself feel better--men just don't always understand the support and caregiving--let's pray that your brother has a change of heart and accepts his responsibility as part of the family too. Glad your Dad is keeping a positive attitude and making new friends. The golden years just aren't always so golden and we sometimes have to search really hard to find a level of contentment in spite of all the bad stuff. Hang in there--and save a spot at that pretty table for me too! Luvs
