Go to Control Panel, double click on Java and check Update... You may want to just download it then uninstall the old version then install the new one...

I haven't got the update reminder yet, mine is set for the 28th of the month..

Where in the Control Panel do I find Java? I take it you do in fact take Java updates under automatic update. This is fact may be on my computer's scheduled functions, I'll look to see if I can find that control

Still getting pop-ups saying I need to update Java, 5.0 I think it is. I still am resisting/rejecting, really postponing.

Grandms, thanks I think the latest update is 5.0 issue (or similar subtitle) 11. I did log on to the Java.com web site and it did advise me to download 5(11). I tried but it would not download. I'll wait until I again get the Pop-Up and see if it goes to the same site and if it will in fact work.

Well, it seems the automatic update for Java doesn't look at what is on the machine. I went to the Java site as noted above but still get PopUps telling me to install 5(10), looks suspicious to me! Anyone know how to turn off the automatic Java Update trigger?

Turn off java updates in control panel from the Java icon. Open its window and one of the tabs is 'Updates' which allows you do whatever you want for updates or not.

Jerry, I was only giving the update number. Yes, the full name is J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11. That is the listing in Control Panel.

grandms, not sure what you mean: "listed in Control Panel" Are you saying you specifically see Java when you active Control Panel, or are you saying when you go via Control Panel to add/remove software you find Java listed? I do, but I now note is isn't 5.0 Update 11, it is 5.0 Update 3 and Update 6, both using considerable space. I now wonder why the old update isn't removed when the new is installed.

I also learned, for all, that if using Firefox 2+ one needs to go "Options" "Security" "allow" and add: www.java.com to be able to download the update. I'm still at a loss on how to "kill" the auto update, but it may be the fact that I'm still running Update 6, when I understood Update 11 had been applies. I'll try to get 11 again and see if the PopUp goes away.

Jerry, if you go to 'Control Panel', you should see Java (coffee-cup, with steam). If you double-click it a Java screen comes up. One of the tabs says, 'updates.' Click that and uncheck 'automatic.' Same as Mikie wrote.

Jerry, it is listed under Add/Remove Programs. It is 120 MB in size. After an update, I always remove the prior ones.

Jane and Mikie, the only place I have it in Control Panel is under Add/Remove Programs, and double-clicking on the coffee cup does NOT bring up the Java screen.

BTW, I have XP Media Center.

Aha! Now I see why mine is different than Mikie's and Jane's. I have my control panel set on Category View. I switched to Classic View and there is Java coffee cup shown separately. The right click then does what you both say.

BTW, on my notebook computer, the file size is 146MB as compared to 120MB on my desktop. I wonder why? Both are the latest update.

Thanks, sure enough Java is there to be "clicked" and to uncheck automatic update.

Reading through this info, I checked in Add/Remove to see what Java version I have. I had 5,6, and 9. I removed 5 and 6. Guess I'll go get 11. I think I remember getting the popup but wasn't sure about it so didn't take it. Forgot about it til I read this.

Also I have a long list of Windows Updates and HotFixes in there. Can I just delete those?

I check in here quite often and find help I didn't even know I needed. :)

grandms, I have XP Media Center also. Quite a change from WIN98 for me. But I think I have it "trained" now.

You should never remove any Windows Updates and Hot Fixes from control panel. Unless you have a conflict or something that the update creates. Most of those updates are security fixes or glitch repairs.

Many people whom understand the howto, will remove the uninstallers similar to; C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallQ282784$ .. , which can remove them from showing in Add/Remove. Or remove them to free up hard drive space - or remove just to make the look of windows folder a bit prettier.

Checking add/remove after installing 5(11) I see listed as running: J2SE RT Environmnet 5.0 Update 11, the latest, but still listed (an running?) are Updates 2 and 6. I'd like to remove them if they are not used by 11, how do I know/learn?

I remove all the java items in add/remove every second or third update offer, then I install the most current java later rather than fresh of the presses the next time I actually use something that needs it.
