My only other question will this remove the problematic security that came with IE7 and rollback IE6? But either way...it would be a lot easier than starting over. This is so trite..but everyone that plays Morrowind is suffering CTD's (Crash To Desktop) within around an hour play. Morrowind has a history of CTD's, but especially now, its like every ten minutes because Bethesda (game maker) didn't author the mods. Part of the game is modding and there's a huge modding community that offers up about a thousand or more changes, free, to players through Planet Elder Scrolls. I've never come across a virused mod and they check them pretty carefully before they wind up on File Planet (mod downloader)...I always scan my downloads before I install them, I unblock them and Microsoft,recently, is just having fits that the new tapestry I wsnt to put in my game didn't come from Bethesda! One poster on a Morrowind forum wanted to get a gun and shoot his game. MY IE 6 is just ohhh man really screwed up. If I make a mistake...I'm done for. I feel too stupid. I can't do system restores either, Windows renames just about every file I own upon completion of the restore...that's a mess and half. So maybe I'd just better start over. I am going to download and a keep a copy of nlite, from what little I've read...it handles lots of things I really don't need or want or use on my computer. Instant Messenger being just one of the space and power gobbling programs I didn't ask for. nLite is very good idea and a great program, especially in the face of Microsofts often immovable position they have concerning some of their software. It is a keeper...even though 'm a little sheepish about getting my feet wet. marf

I am using McAfee for my virus protection. As far as I know, it is doing a good job. My protection is automatically updated. My computer seems to be running pretty good except this drop down menu problem. I appreciate the suggestions about updating to IE8. Have they worked out most of the bugs? When you download it....will it download over the IE6 that I am using now? I really appreciate all the help and suggestions. Thanks for all your help. Larry

The difference between success and failure could still be the browsers. IE is more intensive on resources than FF. If you feel like experimenting do a C-A-D and end everything but Explorer and System Tray. Then try IE and shutdown. What brand is the system? HP at one time had a sound driver/Win98 conflict with shutdown. You might want to try the Windows 98 Help search word "troubleshoot" (sans quotes). Without going out to the garage to verify, my recollection is there is a Startup and Shutdown troubleshooter in Win98. Also, my recollection is SFC will identify changed and corrupt files, but unless you can find the specific file in the Windows .inf folder you will need a Win98 disk to extract it from to repair. well changing your home page on any browser is a very simple thing to do so even if it does change your home page when it installs you can change it right back. Plus on some browsers, firefox for example the first time it opens after install it goes directly to the firefox page to let you know that the install was done correctly however it has NOT changed the homepage to that page. Many people think oh no it changed my home page, nope it only does that on the very first time it opens after that you go back to what ever home page you originally told it you wanted or what ever one you had on the other browser you imported the settings from. Ie8 is like Ie7 yes but the security reasons are the main reason to update it and as stated in your link it is a headache for web designers to have to keep up with out dated browsers so many just don't and the pages will not render properly on those. you might want to go to IE7 first for a little while then do the move on up to IE8. You should not have any problems with Ie7 it has been around for so long but Ie8 is still fairly new. That is what I would do, it is always better to jump from one level to the next and not skip levels.
