Overmount Copper Sink Drainhole: Wrong Size Woes :(
I was coming here to ask "woe is me what do I do now", thinking there was some hard-to-understand problem.
But when I went to post photos of my situation, I realize you can just *visually* see the problem! Now really I think my biggest problem is getting the manufacturer, in Mexico, to address the situation.
So here's my story. I bought a copper sink, that I just love, from a place online called www.coppersinkscasacruz.com -- I still love them so far. We'll see what happens in this next great chapter. But the guy who runs it, Jose, was incredibly responsive, incredibly nice, I just love the look of his sinks, and when mine arrived it was beautiful, still smelled of the forge -- everything was hunkydory. And BTW, should anyone care the sinks he sells from his website directly are more expensive than through ebay because he uses a heavier gauge direct -- which I paid for, I thought it worth the extra twenty bucks and I am still happy I went with the heavier gauge.
So -- all's well, it takes forever to proceed and have my cabinet made and the stone added and to pick a faucet. I chose a Brizo oil rubbed wonder for an insane amount of money in part because there was a drain and that's when the real trouble started. I didn't realize I needed to request a popup drain and they didn't ask. But I managed to get Brizo to send a popup drain; the regular one worked fine but has holes all over the place that are no good.
Then when the popup arrived it didn't fit. Though the regular drain did. And it turns out that the drain hole in this beautiful, now-mounted (overmount with silicon) drain is 1 3/8", which is the ID measurement of the popup drain, not the OD which is 1 5/8". My sink is 1 3/8", maybe even 1 1/2". When I called Brizo they said "lady your sink is non standard, whatchathinkwecandoabouthat?"
I emailed back Jose and he wailed that he's never had a problem before and all his customers have no issues and he cannot imagine what the problem is and he uses a standard drain size and it is 1 1/2". When I put a tape measure to the hole I guess you could squeeze a 1 1/2" measure from that though it's a short 1 1/2". But it doesn't matter anyway because the popup is 1 5/8" OD.
I haven't heard back from Jose. But, he hasn't blown me off yet.... It hasn't been enough time.
When I went to write my woes here and ask if anyone has any creative ideas for getting a popup sink that is less than my plumber's warehouse's $150 one, I realize that just *looking* at his original photo of the sink he would send me and mine, you can *see* the drain hole looks different. So..... I guess what I'm hoping is Jose will look at the photos and say "whoopsey, my bad, something wrong in the manufacturing, let me send you another one". And then I'll somehow have to get the old sink out of it's locale and the new one in there. That's not too hard since it's just overmounted with silicone, right? right??? I wouldn't know....
But of course what I fear is he will vanish into the ether.
Does anyone have any suggestions with any of this? A lead on where to get a cheaper popup drain that will fit? Or how to carefully enlarge the copper drain hole by 1/2 without bending it so things will leak? A way to gerryrig the plumbing so things will work anyway? I don't really even need a drain plug, it's just for washing hands...

Comments (150)When we were kids we just wore bright colors. They didn't want the parents to be obligated for costumes. I'm talking about in school, not dance class. When I was in Mexico in college and taking dance classes, short skirts were in. That is below the knee but not floor length. And we wore them with plain peasant blouses. No embroidery. Just ribbons on the flounce. I think it was meant as anti-colonial, and to be less quaint. Even though the skirts flirt the same way as the long ones do, they could otherwise have just been stylish skirts of the time. I think I still have mine somewhere. One is turquoise with red and white ribbons and lace. The other is a black and white print with white ribbons. We did really really traditional for one show, and more interesting ones for the other, but it's the traditional ones I remember best. I knew Jesusita En Chihuahua from school but we did the bridge in Mexico. :) And we did the real version of Jarabe Tapatio instead of the one everyone everywhere learns in school. And La Culebra, which is one of my very favorites. And a showpiece to Guadalajara. I don't remember the more intricate, less trite ones though....See MoreShould I 'Go Green'?
Comments (13)Oh how I wish I was done!!!! The bathroom is roughly in the same state as the photos. In theory, we should be done in the next few weeks. I like to say that the tile has a lot of character and it's hard to see its true beauty in a photo. Every time I look at it I see different hues... Thanks for the compliment on the bathtub (it has given me quite a bit of grief). I needed a tile I could install and would allow for the curve of the front of the tub deck. We are planning on installing Thassos Marble - White (12x12) on the tub deck (I wanted a solid surface for the tub deck but the estimates came in around $5k so that wasn't going to happen). We will also be putting the Thassos on the tops of the vanities (the installer promises very thin grout lines) and placing vessel sinks on top. I am trying to come up with back splash ideas and now that I see you using the tile in your kitchen I am going to have to make another trip back to the tile store and see if they have something for my kitchen. Comments (55)Happened to see rmkitchen's reference to this thread and came back and reread my original post. Things change as they go along ! We have been back and forth with Ikea as we tweak our layout - they've been extremely accomodating and I highly recommend them based on the customer service - and as a result we are up around $13,500.00 for RTA cabinetry. Our appliances were just over 13 thousand. The copper countertops did not work out. The quote from the supplier kept edging upwards. We got nervous - not about the dollars but we got the impression that the vendor was either dishonest or inexperienced - neither of which we want to deal with. We ended up deciding on granite. The quotes we were getting ranged from 5 to 9 thousand dollars for twelve linear feet of counter with two cutouts and one 4 foot by 8 foot island. We ended up finding a great supplier/fabricator and bought two slabs of Cactus Boreale. The price we got for the granite, fabrication and install is just under 5 thousand. Budgeting just went right out the window when we decided to do the windows as well. We put in a pair of beautiful french doors with stained glass transoms for just under 10 thousand. At the other end of the room we are doing a window seat in a box bay window. The quote we've gotten for the window there is about 8 thousand (three double hungs with fixed transoms above - Andersen 400 windows - custom stained glass inserts, 2 fixed sidelights). Lighting is where we really lost it. The central fixture over the is (Fire Island Fan d'Lier from Savoy House) was $750.00 - not excessive considering it's a fan/light combination. We economised nicely on the entryway fixture and got that for 110 dollars. For undercabinet lighting we bought some light shelves from Ikea that can be substituted for the bottom of the cabinets we are installing. Three light shelves for 419 dollars. But we'll probably end up putting these in as the tops of the cabinets and installing Xenon undercabinet lighting for another 7 hundred. The dining area is what really put us over the top - we made an impulse buy of a small chandelier-ish fixture that had an amazing metal ceiling medallion. 800 for the light and another 800 for the medallion. Then there were the matching sconces... a steal at 200 each. Our budget was 250 for the fixture so I guess we kind of screwed up there, but the things we got are beautiful. We still need to buy our potlights - about 22 units at 50 dollars each. So far, we have spent 1400 dollars on wire and switches/dimmers/outlets. We'll expect to spend another 500 or so there. So what was supposed to cost "just over 2 thousand" is actually coming in at just under 7 thousand. We've nixed the banquette. We'll keep the window seat portion, but we're doing side cabinets and furniture instead. Cost should be around the same - 6 thousand - but we'll be able to move the furniture wherever we want it to be. Our floor still looks like it's going to cost 5 thousand - but we're vacillating now between jatoba and bamboo... We spent 1500 dollars on two sinks - one copper basin and one stainless single. We're refacing the fireplace for 1400 dollars. Cabinet pulls and "stuff" should be about 25 hundred. We have spent 3 thousand on wood and tile for the ceiling and baseboard. No change so far in the labour cost projections - we're still expecting to spend under 6 thousand there. So we're about halfway through our renovation project. We started thinking that we should be able to do it for about 40 thousand, which quickly escalated to 65 thousand once we seriously started researching. We're up over 80 thousand now. We could certainly do things more cheaply but we could also be spending way more than we are as well - so all in all not too bad - considering the only area that we actually compromised was on the cabinets. :)...See MoreA very small and haphazard reveal
Comments (64)Rita, you're too kind as you're always are..thank you so much! the pics are awful the more I look at them lol. well in my defence it's really hard to take good pics unless there's plenty of natural light..and somebody else is taking them:) Who knows better. We just moved in then(the pics taken within first week or two of us in..we had guests coming 9 days after we moved. Guests are my sacred cows.), Obviously more lived in now. We managed to clean the laptop memory some, so i might be able to show you new art, at some point. I'm torn as to where to put it. I'm torn between my initial plan and better balance-and egocentrical needs of me seeing art better from where i usually see it. Lol. The mistakes still stay mistakes though. We didn't get to remedy anything yet. The hardscaping/landscaping of the backyard..still awaits. But we put in one more arch(lol. my DH couldn't live without it) and finally installed back door closet. My friend took pics of the house for her photo business but she was very fascinated with details, I thought she's gonna take these wide lens pics like real estate photographers- but she was so much into books and lights and art and compositions of sorts. Her photos are hundred times better. I think I posted some of hers here and there. They're just a very different approach of showing space. She didn't care about capturing shower niches lol. She has Instagram. And artistic vision. And great camera and knowledge how to use it. While I have you guys:) And strange abilty to write long posts. If I leave a message on somebody's phone it's also painful. (I'm the best when I have someting like flu btw. I get short, clear, and to the point.
