Hard drive too full to defragment - ran anyway

In preparing to do an Acronis backup, I am now running defragment. I got the message saying there wasn't enough free space on my hard drive to run defrag, but they do give you the option to run it anyway. I choose the option to run it anyway and then decided to cancel it 1/8th of the way in.

Of course I'm surprised to see my hard drive is so full - used space is 49.0 free space is 9.53 GB. I don't have games on my computer, not a huge amount of pictures, but lots of articles taken off the net. I didn't want to take the time to find out what is filling my hard drive even though I probably should.

My questions are - did I do any harm by running it a bit even though they recommended not? Secondly, what do you suggest for me getting more free space on the HD so I can defrag it?

Thanks much. Going out for a short hike so will check back later.
