Free Zone Alarm pop-up

I've had ZA for years on all my computers. Lately, each time I start the computers, I get a ZA alert to update to the paid version. I can 'x' it off but it is annoying and I wonder if there's a way to get rid of it. I checked their forum and didn't find any reference to it. Am I the only one?

Its happening my 4 computers.

Try this Jane, copied from the third post in the link below

On Overview - Preferences - Check for product updates
Try to set the Manual option.
There might be also a place to set the days till next reminder.
If not on this screen, then perhaps when the next notice shows up

Thanks Owbist, but I tried that and it didn't work. Must have come in with an update or something because it never did it in all these years. Happening on XP and Vista.

We'll all have to live with it, just another annoyance.

Sue, as far as I know, this is a valid offer. I got the same message, and I have been pondering whether I want to go this route. I currently use AVAST as my AV, along with ZA as my firewall. Not sure if I want to change and give the combination suite a try or not. If you do decide to go this route, you must uninstall whatever you are presently using as your AV since you don't want two AV programs running at the same time. I'm holding off for now, and if I should read lots of good things about the ZA suite, maybe I'll change to it if it's still being offered for free.

It never bothered me like this before. It messes up my remote connection with my office computer because ZA won't allow you to control it remotely. I do a lot of work from home using the office machine through Go to my PC. It blocks access to my office computer and then I have to drive in and 'allow.' An hour later the same thing happens. I googled the problem and the cure was to shut off automatic updates. Did that, changed it to manual and it didn't stop it. I'm wondering if other firewalls will allow remote control? At home, I do tell it to allow, but it continues to pop up every hour or so. Is it safe to change the ZA setting to 'always allow.' The place where you change the question marks to green checks? I always thought Java was easily hacked. Jane

That is not the case for most users, have you done the registration? did you try a reboot? here is the evidence that the new versions can be moved to high. this is the free This is a post from dslr from a user that had his show no high option also and what his experience was "I continued playing with this and wanted to update folks based on this. I downloaded revo uninstaller to help me remove ZA. As I was playing with ZA, I noticed that I now had high security set in ZA! What?!! Where before it would not let me change the setting from medium to high (it displayed a message saying this was only available in ZA Pro) now it was automatically set to High! I looked at the version info to be sure ZA did not somehow give me a PRO version. Still shows free version, but now I can set it to HIGH security. I don't know what changed, except perhaps the "registration" took place between these two settings. I agreed to register this free version, and all I can think of is sometime after I installed/rebooted/ran it, the registration completed and ZA now allows me to set the security to high. This is really odd behavior. Right now i am running ver. 7.0.483.00 and it is now letting me run stealth mode (I think!). I am going to do some tests to see that stealth mode is actually enabled. Will post an update if I find that is not the case. Sorry if I caused a ruckus, but I have never seen any FW do something like this. . To replace software with a newer version is an 'upgrade'. A week or so ago I upgraded free 'Zone Alarm' firewall to version 7.0.408, can't recall the previous version, 7.0.something. Can't remember the exact procedure I followed. Most places will always try to get you to try their 'paid version' for a trial. Just be careful what you click on. If you make a mistake it's not the end of the world and you can always back out. Witz

Why do you feel the need for Zonealarm with Vista when it has a 2 way firewall. Not suggesting it is wrong but curious.

Funnily enough this same subject appeared on another forum today and of course one wag got busy suggesting the script kiddies and crooks concentrate on MS software - it could be a point to ponder on I s'pose.

I guess I just don't trust MS firewall. I suppose its better on Vista. I assume you trust the MS firewall? I have one machine with Vista and the other 3 are XP. I have ZA on all of them.

Maybe that's what I got. I was afraid it was what Jane was referring to and told it not to bother me for 60 days. Hope I did the right thing.

Jane, I do not have Vista but help a few who do. From reports I have read elsewhere it would certainly appear that the MS firewall is a capable program. Any negative comments seem to come from the anti MS crowd rather than with substantial info to support any doubts on the firewall. As I noted I was asking out of curiosity in case perhaps you had read anything to suggest the MS firewall was not up to par.

Grandms you can at any time click on the Zonealarm icon to bring up the window then click to check for updates - or wait out the 60 days,

Owbist is correct. For the traditional user the Vista on-board firewall is just fine.
