Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls?
Comments (18)linelle, I talk to a lot of people about color. Sometimes I think we make it harder then it has to be. (Easy for me to say sitting here in my pink slippers, I know :~D) If you can map out what you want, put words to how you want your room(s) to look and feel, then all you have to do is translate those *wants*, those expectations into paint colors. That's essentailly what a color consultant does. Color speaks and it's a matter of aligning expectations, architecture, inherent light, and design style/tastes with specific paint colors and nuances - tints, tones, shades, hues. When someone is struggling, struggling, struggling, in choosing a paint color, usually that's an indication that there's some *part* out of alignment. Balance is a good thing to reach for. Don't get too wrapped around, hyper-focused on any one *part* of the process. The right paint color in your environment can absolutely deliver a transcendent experience. Unfortunately, I think few people truly know what that means, few have experienced color in their environment that is in alignment with their own unique expectations and tolerances. The typical processes of choosing wall colors lead in directions that don't really mean anything. i.e. Inspiration pieces, pulling a color, ya know all those decorating-type color memes we've all grown up with. From my perspective, the choice is to *decorate* with color or customize environments and create unique atmospheres with color. There's a difference. Decorating with color isn't necessarily easier than customizing and creating - designing - with color. It's just that's what most folks think is easier because it's all they know or have been shown. Personally, I think defining expectations and identifying tolerances is a faster, more direct, and almost guaranteed path to that transcendent experience. Because... the primary focus is humans and architecture not so much focus on the stuff. It's definitely a *big-picture* way to think about color in our environments. The stuff from the room that most people rely on for color inspiration is not what *experiences* color, yet it is the inspiration pieces, the rugs, and whatnot that often drive the color palette -- sometimes for an entire house. When we talk about color in terms of creating a transcendent experience, then the better known color memes seem irrelevant and kinda silly -- in a word, disconnected....See MoreWalls and ceiling same paint color?
Comments (6)I do walls and ceilings the same color lots of times and honestly there is no reason to choose a color for the walls that seems to be the white of a ceiling . I have all pale gray walls and ceilings and I love it. BTW no normal ceiling color it can be whatever you like....See MoreSame white paint on walls and ceiling or lighten the ceiling paint?
Comments (12)White is only white when light is reflected off the surface. The ceiling has less light being reflected off the white than the walls and the angle of the light is hitting your retna at a different angle. Many people will try to cut white or light paint colors and have the color shift and they do not get the color they expected. I have a can of paint handy that is a BM Satin Advance Base 1 custom color. Bright warm white that was a color match to Devine Icing - one of my favorite whites for trim, cabinets, ceilings. The formula is simple: Y3 (Oxide Yellow) 0x0.75 and W1 (White) 0x31.25 So they added a pinch of Yellow Oxide - a slightly orange yellow and they added a good dose of Titanium White No sense adding a picture of white - the description of the color from an artist pigment manufacturer explains it better than a picture will. Titanium White is known for being bright white, almost bluish, and has excellent opacity and high tinting strength. When mixed with another color, it rapidly lightens the color. The drawback of Titanium White is it can be over-bearing at times, especially when you are just looking to lighten the value a bit and not greatly change the color it"s mixed with. If I cut the pigment by 25% I am going to end up with a color that is darker and grayer than the original color because the main additive is Titanium White which is whiter than the Satin Advance Base 1. To make it lighter / Whiter I actually would need to increase the W1 pigment. and may need to increase the Y3 to combat the blue of the W1. Honestly, I don't know that lightening the white will do anything in your circumstance. No matter how light you make simply white you still will not have light reflecting off the ceiling and will end up with something that appears darker than the walls. This is not always bad - it is expected and appears normal when we walk into a room with all white walls. Our brains compensate for difference in colors based on light and shadows. Personally, If I loved Simply White on the walls I would paint the ceiling in the color, same brand and line of paint and just use flat on the ceiling, eggshell on the walls and satin on the trim....See Morepaint walls and ceiling same color
Comments (5)That paint color has a lot of red and yellow in it which makes it very peach in tone. I would not want to work with that as a backdrop. Also keep in mind that the wall and ceiling will not have the same finish. Ceilings are typically FLAT so there are not shiny, hot spots on the ceiling. Here are some typical white colors for walls....See Moresug78
