restore original tile that has been painted?

Hi all - We discovered yesterday when installing a new window that the original 1920's tile in our bath/shower had been painted. It is painted white (one heavy coat that can be peeled/scratched off, although not super easily), and the original tile color is this wonderful vintage, jadeite green - the same color I had painted the walls coincidentally!

I would love to strip off the paint and enjoy the gorgeous original color - is this possible or am I dreaming? I am decently handy but don't want to go too toxic since my little boys spend time in this bath. My GC says removal will scratch the tiles anyway so don't bother. And importantly, I don't want to get half way thru and have to give up, and then it just ends up looking awful.

Any thoughts or advice would really be appreciated - thanks so much! laura
