Vista Basic and Acer Aspire, one experience

This is a follow-up, so to speak, on a couple of other treads I started last week while trying to put a new Acer Aspire Notebook with Vista Basic into service. Specifically I was haven't a problem getting the dial-up connection to remain "transparent", i.e., continue to pass data, no problem establishing or maintaining the connection.

First: I found at the user level Vista to be another step by Microsoft to remove tools (sometimes needed, sometimes just helpful to look at) at least one additional "click" below the operational level, this and other cosmetic changes made it problematic in the beginning, and I think slower, the new notebook did have the recommended equipment to be Vista compliant.

Second: I was unable to fix the dial-up problem after figuring out how to use Vista tools (basically after a few minutes of data exchange the data connection was shut down by the notebook, link failed ping and packet exchange tests, yet the circuit remained "up"). In parallel with my efforts I sent email to Acer technical support (from another compuer), this warned me it could be 3-4 days for a response, I note I have not yet received even an automatic acknowledgement, after more than a week. On last Monday I tried to reach Acer technical support by telephone: they have short hours and only M-F. This is a toll call, not 800, and after waiting to get beyond the automatic answer machine, I hung up and took the notebook back to Walmart for a full refund. Yes, Walmart was responsive, no problem taking the return. Experience: the Acer is a lot of function, look, feel, touch for the money, I really wanted to keep it, and while it had a hardware or firmware problem it may have been sound otherwise, I'll never know. Bottom line, their technical support is worthless, and I would not consider them again. I went to BJs after the return, looking for some old stock with XP, and purchased a Gateway, got a display model on sale, with an instant rebate, and with my request, an additional 10% discount for it being a display machine. Paid only $528 with NJ 7% sales tax. It is up and fully operational, works great, and while it didn't have the 14.1" screen I wanted (the Acer did), its 15.4" screen/size adds only about 1 pound in weight, it is slim and very portable, took it on the road Tuesday/Wednesday. I can't give Gateway technical support a grade, I haven't needed it yet, and that's the way it should be.
