pinelake: I don't know which method was used on my tub. The name of the company is Aarco and they are in the Chicago area. I've left a message with the company to find out which method they used and also about hair-dye. I just couldn't part with a solid, cast-iron, Kohler tub that was in great shape (aside from being pink). And, it doesn't look outdated at all now that it's white. In a previous home, our builder installed a really cheap, flimsy tub and its horizontal surfaces flexed with pressure. So, the caulk would come loose where the tub met the wall and we had leakage. Our Kohler is solid, cast-iron and I know I won't have these type of issues with it. dkauf: I think you are correct that suction cups are not recommended on a reglazed tub (probably not recommended on a non reglazed tub, either, but am not sure). We had the non-skid finish put on the bottom. It looks fine and requires a little more elbow grease to clean than the rest of the surface, but it's not that difficult to keep clean.

Yes, we had our harvest-gold tub turned to white last November. 5 months, so far so good. A co-worker of mine had his done 2 years ago and has had to have the guys back twice to redo it, starting just 3 months after the first attempt. Were his guys idiots? Is his tub magically impossible? Who knows. It seemed to me (from articles and reviews on the web) that a national franchise will reliably do an acceptable job; an independent could be better, or much much worse. So we went with what seemed a reliably adequate chain (Miracle Method) and, like I said, so far so good. Looks fantastic, like a fully white tub, cleaning's been easy so far and it's still unchipped, unscratched, and unstained. I'd say, just do it, unless you can convince yourself that the grey fixtures are really going to look as good as you want them to in your new design.

After I reglazed mine I bought some of the non-slip decals. It was my kids tub, and I had to have something in there or they'd be falling all over the place. My thoughts were that at least once I put these down, they would stay in one place. It's been several years, and there's been no problem with them. I don't think they are recommended on the directions, but safety comes first. They can be bought at walmart, target, linens n' things, etc. The real issue with the bathtub is with cleaning it - I always tell people to use windex and a mr. clean magic eraser - no harsh bleach or other bathtub products. If you do this your reglazing will last for years.

I've been through this debate myself in two homes. What really convinced me was seeing a neighbor's reglazed tub: it was NOT all that good looking! While I'm the type of person that truly appreciates old things, both for their (usually) better build quality and because I believe in re-using things whenever possible, I have to say in this case I'm SOOOOOO happy we decided to replace the tubs with new ones. For one thing it just feels cleaner: you're able to remove the old tub and make sure there's no mold/mildew behind it, have all new caulking, etc. If you install it properly (on a mud bed so there's no flexing, and insulated all around if you live in a cold climate) you'll love a new tub, I think. The downside with some new, cheap tubs is that they're thin and flex-y and cheap feeling. But you CAN get mid-range tubs and if installed properly they'll still feel good and solid. I have used American Standard Princeton tubs in two bathrooms (~$300 at Lowes) and we used a Kohler Archer in the master bath. The Kohler Archer, though normal sized, is extra deep for soaking. In my daughter's bath (see link below) I used a Princeton but added A.S's "deep soak" drain so that she can fill it deeper for baths.
