Please share your after Christmas bargains!

I hit some of the after Christmas sales Friday and Saturday and picked up a few goodies to use next Christmas. Here are a few things I bought in Bed Bath and Beyond and Michaels.

Bed Bath and Beyond had their Christmas items 50% off. I bought two sets of beaded placemats, one in silver and one in red. I've never done a red Christmas tablesetting, so I'll have to be on the lookout next year for items to use on it. I also bought snowflake napkin rings, green/red sparkly napkin rings, gold/red and silver place card holders.

I bought lots of candle rings in Michaels at 70% off. I thought I could use the red ones with the red beaded placemats. My middle daughter really liked the blue/green garland, so I'm going to use it on a tablesetting especially for her. I was sitting here and happened to glance over at my china cabinet...the garland is a perfect match to a set of china that my mother gave me 20+ years ago. So, I'll have a head start on that tablesetting!

At a local gift shop here where I live, I bought some Dept 56 snowflake plates, and a silver angel at 50% off. I'm working on another Flake Off placesetting using these, so those photos will be on that thread along with the silver beaded placemats.

OMG - way too numerous to mention but for starters - just a sampling of balls and tree decorations mostly from Walmart or Dollar Tree

these are for table settings next year - you guys have talked me into getting chargers - I guess that is the start of pretty table settings *wink* not to mention table cloth and napkins. The funky Santa and snowman came from Dollar Tree 50cents each I got 8 of them in different colors. I will figure out next year what they will be used for - lol

We also picked many boxes of lights (just in case) at $1.25 for 100 light box, a couple of buildings and people for the Christmas villages plus more bottle brush trees. About 12 pretty Christmas tins for cookies next year and voltive candle holders for gifts. Everything was either 50% or 75% off. I am a happy camper .....

Wow Lynne, you really got some great buys!! I adore your little funky santa and snowman! Our Dollar Tree didn't have anything like that this year. They are so cute!! I can't wait to see your tablesettings using the chargers.

In your first photo, what's in the plastic container next to the gold snowflakes?

I didn't even go to our Walmart this weekend...they didn't have much of a selection before Christmas, so I know there wasn't much of anything for sale after Christmas.

Dream, they are dinner plates. There were only 6. Ebay can be very expensive. Luvs, I agree, cute little add on for a hostess gift. Yes, I have lots to do scapes with, need some inspiration! Thanks, Nana. I think someone may have returned them, as there wasn't any other plates to go with them. Punk, we do have a good time. Now THAT's a deal! I got 3 Simply Vera Wang tops for $37.60. If I'd paid the regular price it would have been $94.60. I was happy. Wouldn't pay much less than that for 3 tops at Wal-Mart.

Here you go! Date Pinwheels -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Baker's Catalogue editor P.J. Hamel reports that this is her all-time favorite Christmas cookie. She writes: "My own memories include the soft brown dough, the dates bubbling on the stove, the tricky process of rolling the filling inside the dough, and the magical way the refrigerator would make the sticky mass solid and sliceable. And the taste! Waiting till just the right moment, the cookies hot out of the oven but the filling cool enough not to burn, my sister and I would greedily eat date pinwheels till Mom made us stop. No, date pinwheels aren't beautiful; in fact, they're usually kind of plain-looking, the spiral of dates often a bit out of whack. But these homely little gems strike just the right note on my Christmas cookie spread. "Remember to share this recipe with a younger friend; it's up to all of us to pass along this type of old and trusted recipe to the next generation of bakers." Dough 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks, 6 ounces) unsalted butter 2 cups (15 1/2 ounces) light brown sugar, packed 3 large eggs 4 cups (17 ounces) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Filling* 1 3/4 cups (9 1/4 ounces) chopped dates 3/4 cup (5 1/4 ounces) granulated sugar 3/4 cup (6 ounces) water 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups (about 6 ounces) finely diced pecans or walnuts *Though this filling is easy enough to make, if you want to use purchased date (or fig) filling, go ahead. You'll need about 2 cups (24 ounces) of filling. Dough: In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the flour, salt, and baking soda. Chill the dough till it's firm enough to roll out, at least 1 hour. Filling: While the dough is chilling, make the filling. In a small saucepan set over medium-high heat, combine the dates, sugar, water, and salt. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and boil the dates gently for 10 to 15 minutes, or until thickened to about the consistency of very soft jam. Stir in the finely diced nuts, and set aside. Assembly: Divide the dough in half; each half will weigh about 21 ounces. Working with one half at a time, roll the dough into a 9" x 12", 1/4"-thick rectangle. Spread half the filling (about 11 ounces) over the entire surface of the dough; the filling is sticky and stiff, but if you keep wetting your fingers, you can push and spread it around without too much trouble. Roll the dough up, lengthwise, to make a log. It's somewhat delicate, but a baker's bench knife or spatula helps the job along. Wrap each log in waxed paper or plastic wrap and chill for several hours, or overnight. If you have a double baguette pan, slip the wrapped dough into the wells to help preserve their round shape. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease two baking sheets. Remove the dough from the refrigerator, and if it's flattened out at all roll it till it's round again; the log may lengthen a bit, and that's OK. Cut the log into 1/3" slices, and place the slices 1 1/2" apart on lightly greased baking sheets. Baking: Bake the cookies for 10 to 11 minutes, or until they're a very light brown, reversing the baking sheets (top to bottom, and front to back) midway through the baking time. ninos...I wondered why people line up 3 miles to get into that Midnight Madness sale. I didn't realize they pull them in with a $500. gift card hidden in a goodie bag...lol. No wonder. I would love to do Black Friday but I never do. My husband is not a fan of shopping period and he hates traffic more than most people. He hates waiting more than most people. None of my kids enjoy it either, so any interest I have in shopping on that day is very quickly squelched. [g] Actually, I haven't suffered for not going to Black Friday sales. Last year, I was looking for a camera and had my eye on a specific one and about mid December, Staples had the lowest price I had seen or expected to see and they bundled it with a printer. It was a Canon camera and rated highly. I notice this year, they were offering the same camera yesterday for what I bought it for last year without a printer. So that was a pretty great price for a camera that was just on the market last year. ninos...I also am not a pocketbook fan any more. I used to be for many years, but when my kids were small I got in the habit of using a fanny pack. I found one I really liked that was small, slim and black and looked pretty good. That was about 12 years ago and I still use the same fanny pack. lol Believe it or not, it still looks really good. No wear spots or tears or stains. I am a homebody so I am sure it gets less use than most handbags. [g] oceanna...that is one gorgeous table AND what a great job you did in bringing it back to life! Craig's List...I am going to have to keep my eye on that more often. Which categories do you look in the most? That is a great reminder and you are right of course, recycling is healthier for all of us and the planet too. I was horrified recently to discover when shopping for a new mattress that the government actually requires all manufacturers to use fire retardant on them. What is wrong with them? So you are breathing that all night every night, just 'in case' your house catches fire some day. When, if the fire gets to your bed, you probably would be dead from smoke inhalation anyway. So we have postponed buying a new mattress. This year, I have been thinking of becoming less of a 'consumer'. I think I already have been pretty reasonable over the years but there is always room for improvement. I have never been one to put lights up on the house at Christmas, but more because we just don't have the time or energy to do it. Now, with global warming and energy costs what they are, I just can't understand why I continue to see people escalating their outdoor holiday decorating. I went into Lowe's over the weekend, which apparently I rarely do over the holiday season, because it was the first time I saw where people are getting all these huge light displays. Unbelieveable. I LOVED when I was a kid and our parents would take us to see 'the lights' at Christmas, but I think times are different now. Anyway..that is the subject for another thread, [g] it would be nice to keep this thread going over the holiday season and we would have it for next year too, to compare. I am soo jealous of your wonderful buys... keep them comming!!! No shoping for me. I did pick up an angel orni for the tree from Belks they have everything 75% off which makes it down to walmart prices. I stuck her on the tree.

Dreamgoddess - that is a container of funky seed pods, twig balls, really different nuts. I got it from Walmart for $3.25 I have a nature tree on the back porch that stays up almost all year and I thought some of that stuff would look really neat on it. I decorate the tree with bird nests from our yard, dried hydrangea blossoms, and all kinds of song birds to represent the ones we have in our yard. What I don't put on the tree I will put in a container of some kind - probably some old enamalware that I already have and set it on my mothers original kitchen table which is 70+years old ......

When I took my photos, I forgot about some snowflakes that I bought Friday. I brought them straight home and put them on the mantle with my Snow Queen figurines. Here's photos of them. I just love how they sparkle!

Wow!! Nice haul, ladies. Sadly, I didnt buy anything much. We could not go out much because of the snow. Finally went to all my usual stores yesterday but DH had to drive me around - I dont drive when there is even a hint of snow on the road! :) Macys had some nice dishes on clearance but DH kept commenting on how we have far too many plates now so I could not buy anything. I did buy a coffee set in nice china - actually he convinced me to buy that one! This is going to sound cheap but that is the single most expensive individual dish in our house so I havent even opened it - I am too scared to use them. Oh, and I bought a set of gold chargers at Target and a couple of candle rings at Michaels.

I asked my daughter to watch for me some things when she hit the sales. She got me 4 sets of 9' lighted garland, something I actually need. LOL. And I told her any neat reindeer or special type Nutcracker. So here's what she got for me. The silver deer were originally $30 each, she got them for 70% off. Same with the little deer ornament and the Nutcracker.
The Police Nutcracker was not a sale item, but saw him on eBay and had to get him since we're a cop family. Plus he goes with the Fireman. LOL.

Karen, Penny's had a slew of nutcrackers today & they were 75% off, so if you're still in the market for some, you may want to check them out.

Cracker Barrel was just about cleaned out, everything xmas was 70% off, so I didn't get anything there. People line up at 6 a.m. around here, waiting for the doors to open at CB the day after, so I was a tad late on CB's sales.

I'll try to get some pics of the few things I did get.
The lime green placemats with silver threads running thru them, were orig. $11.99 and they had them marked down to $2.99 with an extra 20% off, so I grabbed them, had my eye on them since before xmas & was glad they still had some left!

First picture are all the things I got last week at Cracker Barrel at 60% off. Mug with ceramic spoon, reg. price $4.99, $2.00 each with % off. I bought about 8 of them, will keep some for my tablescape & maybe give some away.

Green & lime pom pom garland, crooked tree, round candle holders & the little packages were ornies to use on the tablescape somewhere, all 60% off. They had none of these left today at 70% off.

Next are the lime with silver thread placemats from Penny's today, they were reg. $11.99 each & today, $2.99 with an extra 20% off, the little snowman & santa were reg. $13.99 marked down to $3.99 with extra 20% off.

Yacht, that crooked tree is a hoot. And thanks for tip on Penney's. I might have to check them out. I've just gotten really interested in Nutcrackers this year! (just what I needed, another collection!!!! sigh)

I got some Martha Stewart scrapbook paper and punches at WalMart half price. I was in there again yesterday and practically bare shelves already. Not much left to chose from.
I also got a red and white snowflake cake plate and a snowman dip dish with snow ball knife/spreader.
Oh yeah also got my Cella cherries. Hadn't bought any before Christmas and it's my fav holiday candy.

You all did really well! I only have been to SAMS to get food items we needed for the weekend, and I bought some ribbon, half off.
I got so much the week before Cmas at Wsonoma and Pottery Barn at 75 off, I don't think I better buy anymore! But you know I will be looking when they go down to 75% off in the other stores..

Well back to work today..ugh!! But I had a $15 gift card for Kohls and it was burning a hole in my purse.. not alot at Kohls for $15 so off to see what's left of the Christmas stuff... I got this candle holder and two bell orni's for $14.40!!!! They were 70% off.. not alot left and their prices are high on most stuff but since it was a gift card...........

I am usually a lurker here, still learning from you pro's, but I had to say that Yachter's first picture made me think "Whoo Ville" Too cute.
I love to get the after the holiday bargains, but was unable to get out until today. I shopped til I was ready to drop : ) Target had 75% off. I got a set of 4.5 foot pine trees in urns for $20. I have wanted these for so long, but didnt want to pay $80! I found these wonderful decorative beaded ornament hooks for $.99. Some of my other bargains were stocking holder sets $2.50,velvet monogramed stockings $3.25, 9pk boxed ornies to paint for gifts for next year $1.25 ea, 9ft wire & crystal garland $3 (I think I will make that into tie backs for my drapes) 14 inch Nutcracker,Clara and Mouse King for $3 ea, beaded and velvet placemats, 25 ft lighted garland $6, large spools wired ribbon $1.25, crystal garland for my vases $.99 and guest towels for $.99. My car was packed!
K Mart was across the plaza so I checked it out too. They were pretty well picked over, but I did find a wedding cake Radko ornament for $5. My son is getting married next year and I have started a holiday box for the shower. I am picking up things on sale after each holiday so they will have a nice assortment of decorations for the year.
I wish I had taken pictures, but I had to get it all stashed away ; )

Robnis143, that is what it makes me think of, I couldn't put a name to it, but WhooVille is it! As you all can see, my xmas table next year will be quite whimsical and light-hearted!!! Guess I need a Grinch doll for the table!!

Our two Targets had a lot left today, I mean alot and they are 75% off, so anyone still wanting to bargain shop, that's the place!

Beautiful angel, Bright. She was a good find, and then I see your pretty candlestick and bells too. Very nice.

Karen, the antlers on your deer are so neat, I love them. I'm not a big nutcracker fan, but those two are great.

Yachter, all your cute, colorful items brought a smile to my face. I can't wait to see how you use them on a tablescape.

I picked up a few beaded garlands and some beads, got a couple of candle rings too. And I bought a really big sign I want to show all of you. I'll try to get a picture taken tomorrow.

Darn, I almost stopped at Target today, then decided not to. Maybe I'll head over there tomorrow now that all of you are telling us about your great deals there.

I'm loving seeing all these neat goodies.

Hi Robin. Glad you posted. Sounds like you got quite a haul. If you get a chance to get photos, please do. You know how we love photos here. LOL.

Dream, I'm not sure where my DD found the deer. I know she was in Target, but she hit a lot of stores. I can't ask her now either, as they went out of town on a mini vacation.

I haven't checked any stores myself, tho I might try a few later this week and see what may be left. Last year, at the END of Jan is when I found my special Santa. The one that is 3' tall. Super cheap, at Tues Morning. Usually the Santas are gone so fast from all the stores. I also got my pretty burgundy decorated wreath at Michaels in FEB.

Luvs, I don't know why but suddenly the Nutcrackers are appealing to me this year. Never have really been interested in them before. Guess its an excuse to have another collection, LOL. These two, and purple one, are my only big ones. Others I have are ornament sized.

Bright, I see you snagged some beauties! I love the mercury glass look. The sheen is so pretty on your pieces.

I picked up a few more items yesterday mainly from the $ stores. Everything was 50% off...wish I could find some of those 70-75% off sales!

I bought mini stockings, 2 rugs, a set of 4 plates/bowls, ornaments, garland, ribbon. My favorites are the candles...one set in white and one with blue.

DH stopped by Hobby Lobby yesterday at lunch and bought one of their 9-foot, prelit, mixed greens trees I've had my eye on. The 8ft tree we have now is on it's last legs and listing to one side. We, of course, won't put it up until next Christmas season, but it's good to know we have one waiting . . . and we got is for 66% off!

Robins - that lace ornament is beautiful - what medium are you using - that is exactly what I want to do with a bunch of my plain ornaments. Right now I have been using modpodge and glitter but yours looks like white paint and glitter????

Dreams - as usual you find some of the prettiest stuff - love those snowflake candles and those glove ornaments ....

Thanks for the compliments. It is just white craft paint and diamond dust. Here is a tutorial I found when I googled painted lace ornament.I think it explains how to do it well. Some of the others were so intimidating! If you do a google image search, some beautiful ones come up.

I have really enjoyed this thread and looking at all your great buys. I just finished a tour of thrift stores (including my favorite for this time of year, a SA store that charges 10 cents for all Christmas items) along the Interstate during a trip to DH's family for the holidays.

A couple of notes on my buys: The carolers, the small bells, and the towel were 10-cent items; other SA items were the snowman, the silverplated tree candlesticks, and the plastic plates (originally from Jo-Anns), all items for 20 cents each; the red glass stars from Pier 1 at $2 each, the silverplated bowl at $1.50; the set of swizzle sticks and the set of snowflake candlesticks were each $2; and the heart-shaped trivet was $1.25. The items varied from 20% off to 75% off and as I mentioned the Salvation Army at 10 cents each.

Most of you may know this, but I wanted to share a tip regarding price stickers. The stickers you can see on the Jo-Ann's plastic plates did not want to come off, and this is plastic that scratches almost if you breathe on it. When this happens, hit the price sticker for about 15 seconds with a HOT blow dryer. Almost all pressure-sensitive stickers will come off without leaving residue if they are heated.

Magpie... I love all your treasures!!! The red stars would be perfect on my tree!! LOL! And the carolers and the silver bowl are my next favs. My SA store doesn't sell anything for 10cents!! Great buys.

Thanks for your kind comments. I did have fun shopping at different thrift stores. I love your silver candleholder and bells. Are they mercury glass? I have an old mercury glass reindeer from my mom but the silver is almost all gone. I have gone away from the gold metals and now prefer silver. I'm actually using Treasure Gold to change the brass bells in the picture to a beautiful warm silver. I bought some silver-colored pull chain and am going to make a garland for across my mantel.

I went to HL this weekend, and picked up a couple more items. This cream and gold Santa just jumped in my buggy and begged to come home with me. Then I found this sage, cream and silver sleigh that I'll use in a tablesetting next year.

I was sick after Christmas for several days and didn't get to go shopping. I finally got out on New Year's Eve. I went to Target and bought a Christmas tablecloth. It is off white with gold swirls and I was able to also get the table runner to match. At 75% off they were only $4.99 each.

I also got another one that is the same pattern, but it is gold. I took it back though the next day.

I really wanted to find one in the long size that could be used on the long tables at church. I really hope to host a table at the annual holiday tea next year. I don't know the size of the tables, but assume they would need the 120 inch tablecloths. The ones from Target were only 104 inches.

I was also looking for chargers, but couldn't find any except at HL and they were $1.99 each and I want 12. My china is white with a green and gold pattern. I have dark green glassware, but still think that the gold will be better.

Then on New Year's Day I was in Walmart in the next town over and found the chargers. I had them in my basket and ran into my nephew who is an asst. manager there. He told me that the Christmas stuff would go to 75% that night at midnight. Since they had so many, I waited.

I was back at midnight and they still didn't show up except at 50 off. I was not a happy camper since I drove back over there, but hey they were only $3 for a box of 4. So, I bought them.

I was back over there later that same day and they were 75% off. DD went to the Service Desk with my receipt from about 1 a.m. that morning and asked about them. They said that technically they weren't supposed to adjust on clearance, but since they had been told that all the markdowns would be effective at midnight and we bought them AFTER midnight, they adjusted. I got 4 chargers in a box for $1.50! I got 20 chargers.

I have a service of china for 12 and DD has her late grandmothers in a service for 8.

I also picked up holiday tablecloths in burgandy, green and gold in two different sizes. I got the matching napkins too. I think the most I paid for a tablecloth (cloth ones) was around $2 and the napkins were almost nothing.

Then I went to Bed Bath and Beyond looking for a specific tablecloth. I found it and in the 120 inch size. It was 50% off and I was able to get the napkins also. the pattern is called Joyous Holliday and looks great with either set of china. I just love it.

I have been very happy with all my bargains, but last night realized that BB&B went to 75 % off yestersday! I was going to go over there today, but went the other direction today and found the awesome urn trees.

All in all, this was great after holiday shopping. I'll have to take some pics.

I also bought a Rick Springfield holiday CD for less than $2 and a handheld Clue game for a couple of bucks.

Thought I had started my above response with today's find, but see I didn't. It must have been on my other board.

Today I went to a town about 20 minutes away with my sister. She was looking for a pair of winter boots that she had seen there.

We stopped in a Walgreens to look. We don't have a Walgreens, but one is being built a few miles away in our sister city.

Anyway today I found two 6 foot lighted trees in urns for $10 each at Walgreens. They were originally $39.99! I was really excited. They had three more and I really wish that I would have bought at least one more. The two I got are for the outside of the house in the front. We will be screening our covered back porch in soon and I should have gotten one for out there and I think that I might like the look of one in my entry. The size would be good for it. Oh well, at least I got the two.

I didn't have much luck with christmas bargains. The stores around here were almost empty before christmas. My best buy was Christopher Radko dinner plates for 75% off. I try to buy something from that dinnerware collection every year,but they are having fewer every year.

I won this on an online auction. It's from Bavaria and everything written on the back is in German except the the artist's name, Hedi Keller. It's dated 1984. I'll be packing it away with the rest of my Christmas things, but thought I'd hang it until then.

LynnNM, that plate is wonderful. Hope you enjoy it a bit before having to pack away. A unique 'find' for sure.
I am still checking both eBay and shopgoodwill.com to see if anything interesting comes up that I can't live without.

Printersdevil, it sounds like you really found some great bargains. I should have looked for tablecloths, I really need some pretty colored ones. I looked at Walmart, Target and Michaels after Christmas and got a few little things, but their items were really picked over and not much left.

Lynne, love your plate. Glad you are getting to enjoy it before it gets packed away. I think I'd find a spot in the bedroom or somewhere and just keep it out to enjoy.
