Address bar

Windows XP Pro on my home computer. I believe that the bar where the presently-viewed URL is displayed is the address bar. Some gremlin has grabbed mine and the URL is barely shown due to a very short space. The majority of the bar has been taken over by another blank space showing Oldies.com-Movies. How do I get rid of this Oldies junk and see more of the active URL?

Is this IE?
If you go to add/remove programs, do you see some sort of "Oldies-dot" toolbar that can be removed?
First step anyway.

other things to try right click on the oldies.com thing and see if there is a delete option or a close option,
On the top like around where it says view edit etc try right clicking and see if it shows that name in the toolbars list if so uncheck it.
If you tell us which browser it is that might help

I'm on a Mac so it may be different but here's what I do. Go to View and then Toolbars. Click on Bookmarks toolbar. That will cause it to appear on your screen. When you have a page you want to save on the toolbar click on Bookmarks. A box will come up where you name it and tell it where you want to save the page. Click on Bookmarks toolbar. You can put quite a few pages there. They won't all show up at once but there is a little double arrow symbol at the end of the row. If you click it the rest of the list will appear. Linda

Kudzu9, I just can't see how 1.HOVER, 2. CLICK "change search settings" 3. CHOOSE search engine 4. finally back to address bar is an improvement. But if they do show up after I type the first letter( without 1, 2 &3), I certainly did miss that. Hard to say for sure since I no longer have it. I'll try if/when I try it again,. Thanks Pkponder, "I didn't care for that feature"... Which feature didn't you care for and were able to customize with Tools, Options, Search? Wondering if you were responding to my question or kudzu's answer. Still hoping I can make it work for me. Thanks

I use Mozilla Firefox. Google is the home page. Right clicking on the "Oldies" dropped down a list of sites and I deleted all of them except for one of them named Google. But it is extra and unnecessary since the homepage is Google. My working URL is still mostly obscured.

did you try right clicking on the top bar and see if you have an additional toolbar listed there? if so uncheck it to make it go away. You normally have navigation, bookmark, if you see another one with that name that would be it you can try view then toolbars also to see if it might show there to uncheck.
Was it not listed in your add remove programs list?. You might be talking about the google toolbar if so you can choose to hide it or remove it from firefox, I took it off of mine completely. Then to make your url area bigger you can right click up on the top of the bar and choose customize (or click view > toolbars> customize) then you should be able to drag out the url address bar bigger you can also while you have it in the customize state drag the google toolbar part off and into that customize box, that is where you can store various items you can add to your firefox bars.
When it is in customize state you can also drag the google toolbar off of the bar with the url address bar and on to the bar below it if you want to have it there instead.
Once you are all done moving things just close the customize box and it will lock it in place

another thought you can go to Tools > add ons> and see if you have google toolbar in there if so highlight it and select to remove it. It is always a good idea to close firefox then restart it after doing these kinds of things, it may not appear till after a restart.

If you are talking about just the google search box that comes with firefox this is the instruction for that as I had mentioned to drag it into the customize box, this shows how.

Don't know about removing the oldies, but I just put my mouse at the end of my address bar and it turned into a double arrow where I could shorten /lengthen the bar. Using firefox.
