Building a Home

New here! So glad I found this forum

Hiya everyone, Im so thrilled I found this forum. I was going a bit crazy and feeling quite alone with all this planning thats going on here and how wonderful to find a place where everyone is doing the same thing and sharing advice. Im so excited. Anyway dh and I are breaking ground on our house in about 4 months. Its going to be a 3044 sf center hall colonial to begin with. In the second stage ( i guess when the kids get bigger, we have three under 6) We are going to finish the basement (10 ft ceilings) and attick (3-4 more bedrooms) Im getting to the point where I dont even know what I want anymore - there are too many choices! Hopefully as I go through the postings and ask advice I can make these ideas more concrete before the house starts being built. It would stink to build it and be frustrated with what I end up with. Anyway, Ill scan in our floorplans after the weekend see what you guys think :) Have a great one!

Welcome! DH and I areat the other end of building a much smaller home for just us. We'll begin moving in next week. I've found the folks on these forums to be well informed, with tons of creative and common-sense ideas, and with amazing willingness to take time and be helpful. I don't know how I could have gotten through even our relatively easy build without my fellow posters on these forums. Thanks again, everybody!

You ARE lucky to have found this site. I feel the exact same way. I have been fortunate to be ahead of the game here as we are still in the designing stage. We plan on breaking ground a year from this fall. I plan on having everything picked out before we submit our bid to the GC this coming fall. I currently have our exterior almost done (windows and doors are already picked out). I am now researching major appliances and bathroom fixtures. I have my custom cabinet company lined up, too, for any wood that we will have in the house. Still have a lot to decide on though! But so far it has been fun looking.

Ahughes (or anybody else), if you're interested in a trade or SASBE, check out my exchange list... Esh-ga, thanks for the good wishes on the winter-sowing. So far done 65 containers, including 38 native species and several cultivars of native species. Its been fun, and I can't wait to see how well things germinate and grow! Winter-sowing affords the opportunity to grow lots of natives that would be difficult or impossible to get at nurseries, or exorbitantly expensive to buy as plants. I bought lots of native seeds (and a few non-native) this winter and offered extras on the Seed Exchange forum. There was a lot of interest in native seeds, which was nice. But I was dismayed to see people trading invasive species like Euonymous alatus (burning bush) or Ailanthus altissima (tree of heaven). One poster even explained on her exchange page how she grows Oriental bittersweet and keeps it contained on a trellis so it's okay! Yeah...only if she strips off every berry...if she saw how it's strangling native trees around here, she might change her mind!

OK on the caps. Best guess-make sure the soil gets somewhat dryish before watering it again. Hold off any other fertilizers-I read you used soil with time release fertil. If this went into shock--if it's a bad shock all the leaves will drop. If only partially it might have just dried out some. One more question, is it a bush from the base or trained as a standard (think lollypop)? Tropical plants often drop their old leaves about the time new growth is put out. Sometimes it's gradual, othertimes it's most of them. As long as you have new growth on them I wouldn't worry. kevin p.s. we call that plant orange jasmine. It's not really a jasmine but is related to the Curry Leaf Tree.

Lots of great information and great people here willing to help! I been on this site for about 7 years! Started here before we even purchased land to build on.
