My cable company charges $7.00 per month for the modem. Would i be wise if I purchased my own modem or am I asking for problems? I need a cable-telephone modem. Any advice is appreciated.

Years ago when I tried that they told me they wouldn't support it if I had a problem. The last time I went through that, They said they will only support if I buy one of the brands they support so I had options. I went through the same thing with the router. I always bought my own, don't remember ever renting one if I didn't have to.

Depends on you.. if it works fine now & I could find one on ebay for like 20 or 30 dollars. Think I'd buy it from ebay. Maybe I'd buy two so I had a spare.

Pay bills online and so much of our daily lives revolve around the internet connections - a modem has quite a bit of importance.

I've used a variety of modems (Netgear, Linksys, Belkin) and have never had a problem setting them up, and having a reliable connection to DSL. Your ISP may be willing to only provide tech support for the model they sell...you should check. Also, what is the price for their modem? You can typically get a high quality unit online (e.g., Amazon) for $50, and phone tech support is pretty good for brand names. I remember you talking about upping your ISP speed tier earlier this month. How well is this higher speed working for your needs?

I’ve been doing computer work for over 15 years professionally and over 20 years personally Bc my mom did coding in the 80# for her job so I got started before all the people my age even had comps (im 34). I previously working for Comcast as an internet tech over the phone. I worked for them before they sent a lot of the support overseas and apparently quit putting money into their own employees training what reps are here.. my experience is 3 years with Comcast IP tech support tier 1 and 2, also a lead of an advanced resolution team. I’ve read all the comments above and before you change stuff I’m curious about a couple of things.. do you have packet loss and have you performed a trace Route? Besides your standard cable stuff and your neighbors, do you have any one in your area that you know of that has any external antennas or anything like that? They would likely be very old. Do your neighbors have any issues with their service? There is a lot of outside interference that can contribute to your problems unfortunately. I hate assuming but I am going to assume Comcast has come out, replaced your drop(line from the tap, green box or up on the power line, to the outside connection on your home), inside and outside wiring and modem/router. While the person mentioning about the WiFi channels is correct as far as that is concerned if you are having problems with other services of Comcast (phone and tv)? Do you? i do heavily agree with purchasing your own equipment. You can actually purchase an eMTA for your phone and a separate modem and separate router. If you choose to get separate modem and router, do not place them right next to each other or on top of each other. I recommend getting a short Ethernet cable and about a foot apart. They can interfere with each other. If you are using the standard modem band of 2.4ghz, I recommend any cordless phones be unplugged if not in use and any other items that use 2.4ghz. If your device has the option, always use 5ghz if you can. Ill hopefully be able to help. I hate the way Comcast customers want to make customers pay for service but doesn’t want to fix th problem when it’s down. Their techs are lazy most of the time or again they are outsourced contractors.

Yep, that's all you have to do, just make sure you get a receipt from CL saying it was returned to avoid any billing issues later. And never mind azinoh, it's a supported modem by CL, they even have a support page for it. And When you say you "changed your network/password" from the old to the new, I hope you also changed the network/password on the new modem/router form what is when when you received it, ESPECIALLY if you bought it used.

If the problem is still current why don't you buy a wireless router? In my opinion, it is easier to use and doesn't have a lot of cables which spoil the design. You will not have anymore problems with finding a convenient desk, cupboard, etc. Anyway, for other questions about router, you can check this site router-network because there you can find all the information about routers and I think that you can find the right one for you. I bought the best router 2020 after their advice, and I don't regret it.

We have time warner with road runner. Have had it since it was adelphia cable. Have had my own modem from day one for the last 15yrs same original modem and not one bit of trouble. We just had adelphia cable at first then when we signed up for Internet they gave me a $50 coupon for best buy to put towards my own modem so they encouraged it back then. Mary

It's not so much "what they support" from a subjective standpoint, rather it's which modems have compatible technology that the cable system requires. All use about the same equipment and (generally speaking) the modems available to buy work with all. Each cable provider has a list of modems that they've tested for compatibility, double check that specific list to be sure what you plan to buy is on it. Personally, I avoid Ebay, I don't like buying anything from anonymous sellers. Amazon has a full selection and good prices.

If you can buy a modem for $70, in 10 months you're ahead compared to $7 per month. Pay less, you're ahead sooner. "Installing" the new modem, if you can call it that, is barely more difficult than changing a light bulb. It usually involves nothing more than making a phone call (you tell them the device ID number so that the system accepts the connection) and then plug in two wires. No tools required

Crafty, a 15 year old cable modem is a dinosaur and several generations behind the latest technology. It may not be providing you the best performance you're paying for. You've gotten your money's worth a few times over, I'd replace it if I were you.

I know but it works and my internet and wireless are super fast so I am not gonna fix what isin't broken as they say. When it dies then I will replace it. Only thing I have are main desktop that is a year old hooked to it laptop 2 yrs old use wireless with it and my kindle fire I use wireless with and internet is fine and fast with this modem. It's a motorolla surfboard modem and I have never had one issue with it. Mary
