I think you're on the right track Dan. I noticed that the Feijoa is of the Myrtacae family (which I understand is the myrtle family?) and the tree photos I'm finding that are the closest in similarity all seem to be in that family. I found this image: http://www-staff.it.uts.edu.au/~don/larvae/plants/myrt/metrosideros-collina.jpg (linked below too), which is also similar, but not quite right. The leaves on mine aren't quite as pointy and don't curl over at the end. The buds on the right of that photo are VERY similar to the ones on my tree, but I haven't seen any blooms yet. Also a bit more info: the leaves are more blue/grey and the stems are almost white and are velvety. Does that extra info give you more of an idea? Here is a link that might be useful:
