Tree ID

I know you must get this all the time, but I just don't know where else to look... so can someone please ID this tree for me? I've taken leaves and photos to garden centres, without any luck. I would estimate this tree is about 15' tall. Please note the spidery root system. I'm not sure if that is relevant. I have actually pruned the branches that were growing at ground level, to get some space underneath for some flowers, only to discover the dense fine root network throughout the soil.

It seems to have small white buds forming, but no flowers yet. I can also see that it has dried seed pods/flowers, which I've also included in the photos. I don't know if it is native, but FYI I am in Melbourne, Australia.

Here is my link to pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42257604@N03/3923184466/in/set-72157622252533039/ in case the link below doesn't work and you need to copy/paste the URL. Flick through photos on right of screen.

Four photos: The tree, seed pod, roots, leaves.

Thanks.
